Yes. You can physically lend or resell a Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card, and you can start its game offline after downloading the game data. The recipient must download the data to their own console, and the card must remain inserted while playing. Nintendo’s official guidance supports these practical uses, but does not set out a dedicated resale process or a legal guarantee about resale rights.
What a game-key card contains
A Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card is a physical card that provides a key to download the game data; it does not contain the full game. Insert the card and follow the HOME Menu prompts to download the data. An internet connection and enough available storage are required. Nintendo says the packaging indicates the required storage space, and a Nintendo Account is not required to download the data. Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card Overview

Game-key cards are a Nintendo Switch 2 format, distinct from standard game cards. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described the format as one distribution method introduced to accommodate larger game-data sizes on Nintendo Switch 2 compared with Nintendo Switch. That is Nintendo’s stated rationale, not a claim that every game requires this format. Nintendo’s 2025 shareholder Q&A, Q16

Yes, after the game data has been downloaded to the console. Nintendo says an internet connection is required for the first download and launch on a console; subsequent gameplay can be started without an internet connection. The card still has to be inserted to play. Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card Overview
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
This applies to starting the downloaded game, not necessarily every feature within it. Online multiplayer, connected services, or other internet-dependent features may still require a connection, depending on the title.
Can you lend or resell a game-key card?
You can pass the physical card to someone else. Nintendo says a game-key card can be used on another console, so the practical process is to hand over the card; its next user downloads the game data to their own system. Nintendo’s cited materials do not describe a separate digital lending feature, formal resale program, or specific resale policy. They also do not resolve any jurisdiction-specific consumer-law questions. Nintendo Australia and New Zealand FAQ

- Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.
The card is not a transferable installed copy. The new user needs internet access and sufficient storage to download the game data on their console before playing. Nintendo says save data is stored on the console, so passing on the card does not pass along the previous player’s save file. Nintendo Australia and New Zealand FAQ
