If it needs replacement, Nintendo Customer Support can replace it for a fee. Nintendo UK also documents a revised Switch 2 with a 5172 mAh battery that is described as user-replaceable. Nintendo lists October 2026 as the expected earliest availability for that revised console in its European revision schedule, and availability can differ by country.
Do not open the console or order a battery until you have identified the exact revision and checked the support information for your market. A replacement procedure or part intended for one revision may not apply to the other.
The two Switch 2 battery versions
Nintendo’s published specifications distinguish two hardware versions. Their battery capacities are close, but their replacement status is different.

Nintendo UK says the revised battery has approximately 1% less capacity than the original. That small capacity difference does not make the batteries interchangeable. The revision announcement covers selected Nintendo products in Europe; it does not mean every Switch 2 sold in Europe has already changed, and it says nothing about availability in every other region.

Identify your revision before attempting anything
The first step is not removing a screw; it is establishing which hardware you own. Nintendo’s own guidance says to check whether the specific product and model has a user-replaceable battery and then follow that model’s instructions.
- Record the console’s market and purchase date. The European revision schedule does not automatically apply to consoles sold elsewhere.
- Check Nintendo’s specifications for your country. Look for the battery capacity and replacement classification associated with your exact Switch 2 model.
- Compare the result with the published figures. A 5220 mAh battery corresponds to the original specification; 5172 mAh corresponds to the revised specification documented by Nintendo UK.
- Confirm before buying parts. Do not treat a battery listing, a video, or an independent repair guide as proof that your console is the revised model.
If the product page, packaging, or support response does not clearly identify the revision, ask Nintendo Customer Support. The safest assumption is that the original service route applies until Nintendo confirms otherwise.
How to replace the battery in the original Switch 2
For the original 5220 mAh console, Nintendo’s official answer is that the internal battery cannot be removed by the user. If it needs replacement, Nintendo says the work is available through Customer Support for a fee.
Use Nintendo’s regional service process
- Open the Nintendo support site for your country. Repair eligibility, shipping instructions, prices, turnaround times, and warranty treatment are regional matters.

- Follow the shipping and preparation instructions exactly. Do not send a visibly damaged or swollen unit without first following Nintendo’s safety directions.
- Confirm the commercial terms before authorizing repair. The reviewed Nintendo material does not establish one worldwide price. Your country, warranty status, console condition, and service channel can affect the final terms.
Nintendo Japan independently tells customers that they cannot replace the console battery themselves and directs them to service-center repair. That supports the same practical conclusion for the original hardware: an official service route is different from a user-accessible battery compartment.

What official service does not establish
There is no universal replacement price that can be quoted for every Switch 2 owner. A fee published for one country, warranty status, or service program should not be presented as a worldwide price. Likewise, a repair estimate or eligibility decision cannot be inferred from the console’s advertised two-to-six-and-a-half-hour runtime.
What “user-replaceable” means for the revised model
Nintendo UK labels the revised 5172 mAh console battery as user-replaceable. That is a meaningful hardware distinction, but it is not permission to use instructions or parts from another revision.

iFixit publishes an independent Switch 2 battery-replacement guide. Its documented procedure includes removing stickers and numerous screws, opening the back cover, disconnecting antenna and microSD connections, and removing a shield plate before reaching the battery area.

This establishes that a technically possible disassembly path exists for the hardware covered by that guide. It does not establish that Nintendo considers the original console user-replaceable, and it does not prove compatibility with the revised 5172 mAh model.

- A damaged lithium-ion cell can short, overheat, ignite, or release hazardous material.
- Reassembly errors can cause charging, wireless, storage, display, or boot problems.
- Opening the console can affect warranty or service eligibility, depending on the country and terms.
- A replacement battery that physically fits may still have the wrong electrical, connector, firmware, or protection characteristics.
Nintendo’s safety instruction is explicit: “Do not disassemble, attempt to repair, or deform the battery.” For the original console, that warning and Nintendo’s paid-support route should outweigh the existence of an independent teardown when deciding whether to attempt a home repair.
Swollen, punctured, hot, or leaking battery: stop using the console
A battery that is bulging, pushing against the case, unusually hot, leaking, emitting an odor, or visibly damaged is not an ordinary low-runtime problem. Stop charging and avoid pressing, bending, puncturing, or removing it yourself.
Nintendo Japan advises service-center replacement for a swollen battery. Do not continue testing it to measure runtime, and do not place a damaged pack in household rubbish or a normal parcel. Contact Nintendo or a suitably qualified electronics repair service for instructions in your area.
If you are disposing of a device whose internal battery cannot be removed, Nintendo Japan’s guidance says not to disassemble it and to follow local municipal disposal instructions. Disposal rules vary, so use the battery and electronics route specified by your local authority.

Does short battery life mean replacement is necessary?
Nintendo estimates approximately two to six-and-a-half hours of battery life for the original Switch 2, depending on the games played and usage conditions. That is a product estimate, not a diagnostic threshold. A console reaching the lower end of the range is not automatically defective, and a console with a battery problem may show symptoms other than runtime.
Before requesting service, compare behavior under consistent conditions:
- Use the same game, brightness, wireless settings, and performance mode when comparing sessions.
- Check whether the console reaches a full charge and whether the percentage drops unusually quickly while idle.
- Note unexpected shutdowns, charging interruptions, heat, case deformation, or a battery indicator that changes abruptly.
- Install available system updates and try Nintendo’s battery-life improvement suggestions before concluding that the cell requires replacement.
These checks can help describe the problem to support, but they do not authorize opening the console or establish a battery lifespan. The available Nintendo material does not provide a guaranteed number of years, charge cycles, or a universal replacement interval.

Country matters at every stage: the revision may not be sold in your region, support eligibility can differ, and an authorized repair provider in one country may not be authorized in another. Verify authorization and geography before handing over the console or buying a part.
