Yes—mechanical keyboard switches can be replaced. On a hot-swappable keyboard, sockets hold the switch pins, so you can pull out a switch and install a compatible replacement without soldering. On a soldered keyboard, the switch is attached directly to the PCB and must be desoldered before a new one is soldered in.

Before buying switches or applying a puller, identify the exact keyboard model and revision, confirm whether it uses mechanical or optical switches, and check the supported pin and mounting format. Model variants can differ, so never use force to “test” whether a board is hot-swappable.

What “hot-swappable” means

A mechanical switch has electrical pins that connect the key to the keyboard’s printed circuit board (PCB). In a conventional board, those pins pass through the PCB and are fixed in place with solder. Removing the switch means melting and extracting that solder, then soldering the replacement.

A hot-swappable PCB has a socket at each switch position. The socket grips the switch pins and contains conductive material that completes the circuit. The switch can therefore be removed and installed without heating the PCB. Hot-swap capability describes the PCB and its sockets, not merely the keycaps, case, or the fact that a keyboard includes a puller.

How to check whether your keyboard is hot-swappable

1. Search the exact model documentation

Start with the product page, manual, or support article for the exact model name, layout, and revision printed on your keyboard or its packaging. Look for explicit wording such as hot-swappable sockets, hot-swap PCB, or instructions that describe pulling switches with a switch puller.

Do not assume that every version in a product family is identical. NZXT’s compatibility guidance, for example, covers three Function mechanical models but explicitly excludes the Function 2 Optical Keyboard. A “Function” label alone is not enough; the technology and revision must match.

2. Treat a manufacturer’s compatibility list as the authority

If the maker names supported switch families or pin formats, use that list rather than a retailer’s generic description. Razer Support’s replacement procedure, updated July 14, 2026, begins by telling users to identify whether the board is hot-swappable or soldered. That check comes before any removal attempt.

3. Inspect an opened PCB only when appropriate

If the keyboard is already open for a legitimate repair and you can safely see the PCB, a hot-swap socket sits around the switch-pin holes and grips the pins. On a soldered board, the pins are joined to the PCB by visible solder joints instead.

Do not remove the case solely to investigate unless you are comfortable with the keyboard’s construction and have followed its service guidance. Do not yank a switch as an experiment: a soldered switch can damage its PCB pads or the switch housing when forced.

What does not prove hot-swap capability

  • Removable keycaps: almost all mechanical keyboards with removable keycaps can still have soldered switches.
  • A switch puller in the box: some manufacturers include tools for models that require a different service procedure, and the tool itself does not prove the PCB type.
  • A product listing that says only “mechanical keyboard”: that describes the switch technology, not whether the switches are socketed.

Check compatibility before choosing a replacement

A switch that physically resembles the original may still be electrically or mechanically wrong. Compare the candidate switch against three requirements: technology, format, and the exact keyboard model.

Mechanical versus optical

Mechanical and optical switches are different technologies and are not automatically interchangeable. EPOMAKER’s compatibility guidance specifically warns against treating them as interchangeable. An optical board needs the optical switch type specified for that board; a conventional mechanical switch may not actuate or may not fit its socket.

Pin count and mounting format

For MX-style mechanical switches, a 3-pin version has two metal electrical pins and one plastic center retention pin. A 5-pin version adds two plastic alignment pins. Whether a particular keyboard accepts one or both formats depends on the keyboard’s PCB, plate, and manufacturer guidance.

There is no universal rule that every hot-swap board accepts every 3-pin or 5-pin switch. Check the exact model’s specification. Do not cut or modify alignment pins unless the manufacturer or a reliable service procedure explicitly supports that modification; altering a switch can undermine its fit and warranty.

Model and revision restrictions

Use the model number, layout, and revision when comparing specifications. A full-size version, compact version, and later optical revision may use different sockets even when their names are similar. If the manual does not state compatibility, contact the manufacturer or treat the switch as unverified rather than guessing.

Compatibility check What to verify Why it matters
Technology Mechanical or optical Mechanical and optical switches are not automatically interchangeable.
Switch format Supported MX-style design and 3-pin or 5-pin arrangement Plastic alignment pins and socket geometry must match the PCB and plate.
Keyboard identity Exact model, layout, revision, and any manufacturer restrictions Different variants in one family can use different switch systems.
Electrical fit Correct metal-pin position and straight pins A bent or misplaced pin can prevent registration or damage a socket.

How to replace a switch on a confirmed hot-swap keyboard

Prepare the replacement switch, a switch puller, and a keycap puller if the keycap needs to come off. Work on a clean, stable surface where a dropped pin is easy to find.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disconnect power. Unplug the keyboard or turn it off if it has a power switch or wireless mode. ASUS’s ROG Azoth FAQ, last updated January 25, 2024, advises against replacing switches while the keyboard is powered because of short-circuit risk.
  2. Remove the keycap. Hook the keycap puller around the keycap’s sides and lift straight up. Larger keys may have stabilizers; lift evenly so the keycap does not twist or pull a stabilizer wire sideways.
  3. Position the switch puller. Squeeze the puller so its tips engage the switch’s retaining tabs, normally on opposite sides of the switch housing. The tool should grip the housing, not the keycap stem or the socket.
  4. Lift gently and vertically. Pull the switch straight up with controlled pressure. If it resists, stop. Recheck that the board is truly hot-swappable and that the puller is releasing both retaining tabs. Forcing a soldered switch or a poorly positioned puller can tear PCB pads or damage the socket.
  5. Inspect the replacement. Confirm that it is the supported mechanical or optical type and the supported pin format. Look underneath for bent metal pins, missing plastic alignment pins, or debris. Straighten a pin carefully before insertion; do not force a crooked pin into a socket.
  6. Align the switch. Match the switch’s pins and plastic posts to the PCB holes. Keep the switch housing square with the plate and socket.
  7. Press straight down. Apply firm, even pressure until the switch is seated flush. It should enter smoothly. If it stops partway, remove it and inspect the pins instead of increasing force.
  8. Reinstall and test. Press the keycap back onto the stem, reconnect or power on the keyboard, and test the key in a text editor or keyboard tester. Confirm both the keystroke and any expected stabilizer movement before replacing additional switches.

What to do when the switch will not come out or will not seat

The switch will not pull out

  • Stop pulling and verify the exact model’s documentation again.
  • Confirm that the switch puller is gripping the retaining tabs rather than scraping the housing.
  • Check whether the board is soldered. A soldered switch must be desoldered first.
  • Inspect for a case or plate design that prevents the puller from reaching the tabs.

Never use pliers on the switch stem or twist the switch sideways. Side loading can damage the plate, socket, or PCB.

  • Pro Software for Even Deeper Customization - Reassign the 4 hotkeys to your own shortcuts, design custom lighting effects, and program macros with your own keybindings.

The replacement stops before it is flush

  • Remove it and inspect every metal pin for bending.
  • Check that the plastic center or alignment pins are present and positioned for the board’s holes.
  • Confirm that the switch is the supported technology; an optical switch and mechanical switch can look similar from above.
  • Look for a foreign object in the socket or a misaligned plate opening.

Do not press harder to overcome resistance. A pin that misses the socket can fold underneath the switch and permanently fail to make contact.

The key does not register after replacement

Power off, remove the keycap, and reseat the switch once with the pins inspected. If the key still fails, test the original switch in the same position if it is available, then test the replacement in another confirmed compatible position. This comparison can distinguish a faulty switch from a damaged socket or PCB trace. Stop and seek repair assistance if a socket is loose, a PCB pad has lifted, or several neighboring keys fail.

The keyboard behaves erratically after a swap

Disconnect it immediately and inspect for a bent pin bridging contacts, conductive debris, or a switch that was inserted while the keyboard was powered. Do not continue testing until the area is dry, clean, and correctly aligned. ASUS specifically warns of short-circuit risk when changing ROG Azoth switches while powered.

Replacing a switch on a soldered keyboard

A soldered board can still be repaired, but the process is fundamentally different from a hot-swap swap. The existing switch must be desoldered from the PCB, removed from the plate, and replaced with a compatible switch whose pins are then soldered to the board. Razer’s support instructions call for soldering equipment and recommend following soldering safety guidance.

What the job requires

  • A temperature-controlled soldering iron and suitable soldering supplies.
  • Desoldering equipment, such as a pump or braid, appropriate to the board.
  • Ventilation, eye protection, and a stable heat-resistant work area.
  • Experience identifying solder joints and avoiding lifted PCB pads.
  • A replacement switch with the correct technology, housing, and pin arrangement.

Do not treat a soldered board like a hot-swap board, and do not pull the switch before its solder joints are fully cleared. Excess heat or force can separate a PCB pad from the board. If you do not already have soldering tools and experience, a keyboard repair technician is safer than learning on a board you need.

When a replacement switch is the right fix

Replacing one switch makes sense when a key is physically damaged, has a different feel from the rest, or intermittently fails and the socket and PCB are otherwise sound. A hot-swap board also lets you change the feel of selected keys without committing to soldering, provided every replacement matches the board’s compatibility requirements.

Replacement is not a cure for every keyboard problem. A key that fails because of firmware, a damaged socket, a broken PCB trace, a stabilizer problem, or contamination may continue to fail with a new switch. Test methodically and isolate the switch from the rest of the keyboard before buying a full set.

A practical decision checklist

  • Have you identified the exact model, layout, and revision?
  • Does the manufacturer explicitly state that it has hot-swappable sockets?
  • Is the board mechanical or optical, and does the replacement use the same technology?
  • Does the board support the replacement’s pin and mounting format, including 3-pin or 5-pin where relevant?
  • Is the keyboard disconnected or powered off?
  • Do you have a switch puller, and are you gripping the retaining tabs correctly?
  • Are all replacement pins straight and aligned before pressing?
  • Will you stop immediately if the switch does not enter or leave smoothly?
  • If the board is soldered, do you have appropriate desoldering and soldering equipment and the skills to use it safely?

Bottom line for choosing your next step

Confirm the exact keyboard documentation first. If it names hot-swap sockets, use the correct puller, work with the keyboard unpowered, and install only a switch whose technology and pin format the board supports. If the documentation identifies a soldered PCB, plan a desoldering and soldering repair instead of trying to pull the switch out. The safest rule is simple: resistance is a signal to stop and verify, not a reason to apply more force.
