Yes—but eBay allows buyers to retract a bid only in limited situations. The permitted examples are entering the wrong amount or a significant change to the item description after you bid. Changing your mind is not enough. If you cannot retract the bid, you can ask the seller to cancel it, but the seller decides whether to agree.

First, know what “unbid” means on eBay

“Unbid” is a common way to describe removing an auction bid. eBay’s official term for a buyer removing their own bid is retracting a bid. A seller removing a buyer’s bid is canceling a bid. Placing a bid means agreeing to buy the item if you win, so a bid is not a no-obligation expression of interest. eBay’s bid-retraction instructions and invalid bid retraction policy explain the limits.

Retracting a bid is also different from withdrawing a Best Offer, asking to cancel an order after a sale, or ending a seller’s listing. Those are separate processes with different eligibility rules.

When can a buyer retract a bid?

eBay’s US help and policy pages describe two qualifying reasons: you entered the wrong bid amount, or the seller significantly changed the item description after you bid. The timing and listing category can also affect whether the retraction option is available.

  • Significant description change: A substantial change to the item description after you placed your bid is a permitted reason under eBay’s stated guidance.
  • Less than 12 hours remain: eBay says the listed retraction options apply only within one hour of placing your bid when the auction has fewer than 12 hours left.
  • Trading Cards listing: eBay’s help page says bids in the Trading Cards category cannot be retracted. You can ask the seller to cancel your bid, but the seller has discretion.

Changing your mind or bidding on multiple identical items when you meant to buy only one are examples eBay identifies as invalid reasons. Its rules say a bid retracted for another reason is an invalid bid retraction.

Buyer retraction or seller cancellation?

Option Who acts? When it may be available Who controls the outcome?
Retract a bid The buyer removes their own bid. Only for reasons eBay permits, subject to the auction’s remaining time and category rules. eBay’s rules and the available listing/account controls determine whether the buyer can proceed.
Cancel a bid The buyer asks the seller; the seller removes the bid. The seller may cancel in circumstances allowed by eBay, including agreeing to a buyer’s request. The seller decides whether to accept the request; agreement is not guaranteed.

eBay says sellers may cancel a bid if they agree to a buyer’s request, the item is no longer available, the listing contains an error, or they are concerned the bidder may be fraudulent. Sellers are discouraged from canceling bids unless necessary, and a canceled bid cannot be reinstated. See eBay’s seller guidance on canceling bids and managing bidders.

How to try to retract your eBay bid

  1. Confirm what you placed. Check that this is an auction bid you made—not a Best Offer or a completed order. eBay handles those through separate processes.
  2. Check your reason. A wrong amount or a significant post-bid change to the description may qualify. A change of mind does not.
  3. Check the countdown and category. If fewer than 12 hours remain, the stated options apply only within one hour after you placed the bid. Check whether the listing is in Trading Cards, where eBay says bid retraction is unavailable.
  4. Use eBay’s bid-retraction process. Open eBay’s Retracting a bid help page and follow its current instructions. You may need to sign in. If your reason and listing qualify, use the available retraction control.
  5. If you entered the wrong amount, bid again promptly. After retracting the incorrect bid, enter the amount you intended, as eBay instructs.
  6. If retraction is unavailable, contact the seller. Explain the specific mistake politely and ask whether they will cancel your bid. The seller may decline.

These instructions are based on eBay’s US-domain help and policy pages. The pages do not establish that every country uses the same rules or interface, and account-specific controls may require sign-in. Check the live listing and your local eBay help page for the options currently shown to you.

What if the bid remains and you win?

If your bid remains active and you win, treat the purchase as a commitment. eBay’s unpaid item policy says buyers generally must pay within four calendar days. Review the current unpaid item policy if you have questions about payment or an unpaid order.

Don’t confuse a bid retraction with an order cancellation

  • Retracting a bid: The buyer removes their own bid under eBay’s limited bid-retraction rules.
  • Canceling a bid: The seller removes a buyer’s bid where eBay’s seller rules permit it.
  • Canceling an order: This is a post-sale request. In eligible cases, the buyer can ask, but the seller must accept. eBay says its standard buyer order-cancellation request is not available for an item purchased at auction. See eBay’s buyer order-cancellation guidance.
  • Ending a listing: This is the seller stopping an active listing, not the buyer retracting a bid. Eligibility depends on the auction’s remaining time, bids, and reserve status. Ending a listing with bids may have fee implications, and repeated early endings can result in account limits or restrictions. Sellers should check eBay’s current listing-ending guidance before acting.
