You cannot reliably remove Claude’s text watermark with light edits. Anthropic says it is a statistical pattern in the words Claude chooses—not a visible label or hidden character—and that replacing every word in a complete rewrite removes that signal. That is not a dependable evasion recipe: after a total rewrite, it may no longer be accurate to describe the result as AI-generated.
What Claude’s text watermark is—and isn’t
Anthropic describes the watermark as a statistical signal in token choices. When Claude has several plausible ways to continue, a keyed source of randomness influences its choice. Across enough such choices, an authorized detector can compare the passage with the pattern expected under that key and estimate whether Claude likely contributed to it. Anthropic says the method does not steer Claude toward unusual vocabulary, and that nothing is added to the text: there is no visible stamp or hidden character to find and delete. The company says its method is a version of Google DeepMind’s SynthID-Text approach, published in a 2024 Nature paper. Anthropic’s explanation of how Claude’s text watermark works.
This is different from image provenance. Anthropic says supported Claude-produced PNG, JPG, and SVG files can include a C2PA content credential in file metadata indicating Claude was involved. That metadata record is not the text watermark. Anthropic’s description of supported image credentials.
What editing does to the signal
Anthropic says light editing probably will not remove the watermark completely. It also says a rewrite that replaces every word will remove the signal, while noting that such a passage may no longer fairly be called AI-generated. The company does not describe a reliable intermediate editing method that guarantees removal, so ordinary paraphrasing should not be treated as a way to defeat detection. The practical question is how much text Claude generated or changed, and how many meaningful word choices the passage contains:
- Short passages: They provide fewer word choices for a detector to assess, so the result may be inconclusive.
- Factual prose: Correct terms leave fewer interchangeable options, which can mean less watermark signal.
- Proofreading: If Claude only corrects grammar or punctuation in human-written material, relatively few words may be Claude’s choices; Anthropic says there may be too few edits for a watermark to register.
- Translation: Anthropic says Claude chooses every translated word, so translation output carries a watermark.
- Code: Many tokens have to satisfy strict syntax or correctness requirements, leaving fewer alternatives. Anthropic says comments can still contain arbitrary choices that are watermarked, while the effect on the code itself is negligible by definition. Anthropic’s examples of constrained and edited text.
What a detector can—and cannot—tell you
A watermark result can support a likelihood judgment that Claude was involved in producing some text. It cannot establish that Claude was the sole author, distinguish generation from substantial editing, or prove that text is human-written when no watermark is detected. Anthropic says the watermark contains no information that can identify a user, organization, or chat, and text produced by another AI system would not match Claude’s key. A small sample can also be inconclusive. Anthropic’s stated limits and privacy explanation.

Anthropic says its detection API is in private preview, not a public consumer checker. The company currently offers it to eligible organizations, including regulators, law enforcement, media, fact-checkers, independent researchers, educational organizations, and EU civil society groups, as well as enterprises with related compliance obligations. Anthropic says it plans to expand access. Anthropic’s information about API access.

Anthropic’s September 2026 model announcement says watermarking applies to models released after August 2, 2026, with older models being updated over the following months. Its August 14, 2026 explainer says future Claude models would use watermarking and that the company applied it globally at launch, citing the EU AI Act and the EU Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content, which Anthropic said it signed in July 2026.
