No—not as a universal built-in Google TV feature. Google provides limited customization on the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote: its star button can open Google Home, a favorite app, or your display’s inputs. Google also documents a separate option for changing which YouTube app opens from the YouTube key. Remapping other buttons may be possible with a third-party app on some Android TV and Google TV devices, but support depends on the exact television or streamer, remote, firmware and key.
That means the answer to “Can you remap every button?” is no. You can reliably change certain documented shortcuts, and you can experiment with broader remapping only after checking whether your particular button is detectable and overrideable.
What “remapping” means on Google TV
Remapping changes the action attached to a physical key. For example, a shortcut key might launch an app instead of the service printed on its face. This is different from pairing a remote, changing the remote’s batteries, or moving an app on the Google TV home screen.
Google TV hardware is not one single remote design. A television with Google TV, the Google TV Streamer, and a remote paired to another Android TV device can expose different controls and settings. A feature documented for one remote therefore cannot be assumed to exist on all Google TV remotes.

The strongest official support is for the star-marked customizable button on the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote. Other keys have narrower, device-specific behavior. System keys such as Home, navigation, voice assistant, power and volume are handled differently from ordinary app shortcuts and may not be available to a remapping app at all.
Google’s built-in option: the Streamer remote’s star button
On the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote, Google describes the star button as a configurable shortcut. The supported choices are:
- Open the Google Home panel.
- Open a favorite TV app selected from the available list.
- Display the input sources for the TV or other connected display.
These are the actions Google documents; the setting is not a general editor for every key. Google’s support page says the customizable button can create a shortcut to “open the Google Home panel, a favorite TV app or display the input source for your TV or other display device.” See the official setup instructions for the Streamer remote.

- On the Google TV device using the Streamer Voice Remote, open All Settings.
- Choose Remotes & Accessories.
- Select Set up remote buttons.
- Choose Customizable button.
- Select whether the button should open Google Home, launch a favorite app, or show device inputs.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to finish.
Google also documents a quicker editing method: press and hold the customizable button for one to two seconds, then follow the prompt to change its shortcut. If the menu is absent, confirm that the remote is the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote and that it is paired with the intended device. The instructions do not establish that the same menu exists on every Google TV television or third-party Android TV box.

Can the YouTube button be changed?
Google’s remote overview documents a specific YouTube behavior: the YouTube button can be set to open a preferred YouTube app. This is a defined option for that key, not permission to assign any action to every button.
Open the remote’s available YouTube preference when your device presents it and select the YouTube app you want to use. The exact choices can depend on which YouTube-branded apps are installed and supported on that device. Google describes the feature in its Google TV Streamer Voice Remote overview.
If you are trying to turn a Netflix-style service key into a completely unrelated command, the YouTube setting does not help: it only addresses the YouTube key and compatible YouTube app choices.

Some Android TV and Google TV applications claim to assign actions to additional remote keys. For example, the Google Play listing for Button Mapper TV QuickActions says it supports Android TV and Google TV and can assign actions after you enable its Accessibility Service. The listing gives examples including Home and streaming-service keys.

That description is a developer claim, not a guarantee for every remote. A key may be invisible to the app, intercepted before Android receives it, or protected by the television manufacturer. Firmware updates can also alter behavior. The available information does not provide a complete compatibility matrix or a verified success rate.
Before installing a remapper
- Identify the exact device model and Android TV or Google TV version.
- Check whether the remote is the television’s original remote, a Google TV Streamer remote, or a remote paired to another Android TV device.
- Read the app’s current Play Store requirements and privacy disclosures.
- Decide whether granting an Accessibility Service is acceptable. That service is what allows the app to observe and react to button events, but it is a powerful permission.
- Keep the original remote, or another known-working controller, available while testing.
Do not assume that an app can replace power, volume, voice-assistant, Home or directional keys. These may be processed by hardware, the display’s control layer, or a manufacturer-specific service before a normal Android application can act on them.

Use the built-in route whenever it meets your goal. It is easier to undo and does not depend on another app continuing to run. Consider third-party software only for a specific key that the built-in settings do not cover.
A safe way to test remapping on your device
- Write down the original behavior. Test the target key and note what it normally does. This gives you a reference if the change has to be reversed.
- Start with a low-risk key. An app shortcut is safer to test than Home, Back, navigation, voice, power or volume.
- Install one remapper at a time. Multiple accessibility-based remappers can conflict, making it difficult to identify which service is handling a key.
- Enable the required service only after reviewing it. In the app’s instructions, follow the Android settings path it provides for Accessibility and turn the service on only if you understand the permission.
- Assign a reversible action. Choose an app or command you can recognize immediately rather than changing several keys at once.
- Press the key repeatedly. Test from the home screen, inside an app and after waking the device. A key can behave differently depending on the foreground app or whether the device is asleep.
- Keep a route to Home. Before changing Home or navigation behavior, confirm that another physical key, the original remote or the on-screen controls can still return you to the home screen.
- Change one variable at a time. If a remap fails, restore the previous assignment before testing another button.
Why a remap may not work
The key is never detected
Some remotes send a command that the app cannot observe, especially for power, volume, voice and manufacturer-specific service keys. If the app provides a button-test screen and nothing appears when you press the key, there may be no software-only fix.

The key is detected but the original action still wins
Detection does not guarantee control. The system or television firmware may execute the original command before an accessibility service can replace it. Try a different non-system key; if ordinary shortcut keys work but the target does not, the restriction is likely specific to that command.
The menu is missing
The star-button menu is documented for the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote. If you are using a built-in Google TV television or another remote, the absence of All Settings → Remotes & Accessories → Set up remote buttons → Customizable button may simply mean that hardware does not expose Google’s Streamer feature.
The remap stops after a restart or update
Accessibility services can be disabled, restricted or changed by a system update. Recheck the service status, the app’s battery or background settings and the assigned action. If the update changed key handling, the app developer may need to add support for the new firmware.

You can no longer navigate normally
Use the original remote or another paired controller to open the remapper and restore the key. If you changed Home or directional controls, avoid repeatedly experimenting without a backup input method. A factory reset should be a last resort because it removes device settings and accounts; the available documentation does not identify it as a required remedy for ordinary remapping problems.

Which method should you choose?
You only want a quick app shortcut
If you have the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote, assign the star button to a favorite app through Google’s built-in menu. This is the most predictable option because it is supported by the platform vendor.
You want to switch among display inputs
Use the star-button input shortcut on the Streamer remote. It is designed to display the inputs for the connected TV or other display, avoiding the need to navigate through multiple settings screens.
You want a different YouTube app
Use the documented YouTube-button preference, provided the desired YouTube app is installed and offered by the device.

Check a reputable remapping app, verify that it supports your exact device and key, and test without changing navigation controls. Treat compatibility as unconfirmed until the button works reliably in your own setup.
You want to remap every key
There is no supported universal method. Google’s built-in settings cover selected shortcuts, and third-party software may extend that coverage unevenly. A remote that appears fully customizable in one setup may expose fewer remappable events on another television, streamer or firmware version.
Bottom line
Google TV does not provide a universal “remap every button” feature. The Google TV Streamer Voice Remote supports a star-button shortcut for Google Home, a favorite app or device inputs, and Google documents a preferred-app choice for the YouTube key. Broader changes require third-party software and careful testing because key visibility and override permissions vary. Identify your hardware first, preserve a reliable path to Home, and treat every unlisted button as device-dependent rather than guaranteed.
