Short answer: You may be able to influence some processes and measurements associated with cellular aging, but no intervention has been proven to reverse cellular aging, remove all harmful senescent cells safely, or extend human lifespan. Exercise and some dietary strategies have produced encouraging findings in human studies, while senolytic drugs, supplements and consumer “biological-age” tests remain experimental or limited.

What “cellular aging” means

Cellular aging is not a single switch that can be turned off. Cells accumulate changes over time, including altered gene regulation, damaged proteins, mitochondrial dysfunction and reduced ability to divide or repair tissue. One important process is cellular senescence: a state in which a cell permanently stops dividing but remains metabolically active.

Senescent cells can release signaling molecules that affect nearby tissue. As the body becomes less efficient at clearing dysfunctional cells with age, these cells may accumulate and contribute to inflammation, impaired tissue function and age-related disease. However, treating every senescent cell as harmful is inaccurate. Senescence has useful roles in embryonic development, childbirth and wound healing, according to the National Institute on Aging (NIA).

That dual role creates the central challenge: an intervention that removes or suppresses senescent cells indiscriminately could interfere with normal repair and other beneficial functions. A reduction in one senescence-related marker therefore does not automatically mean that a person’s tissues have been rejuvenated.

What human evidence actually shows

Studies of aging interventions measure different outcomes, and those outcomes are not interchangeable. A laboratory marker, a molecular-age score, mobility, disease risk and lifespan answer different questions.

Evidence type What it can indicate What it cannot establish by itself
Cell or animal experiments Possible mechanisms and safety signals to investigate That an intervention works or is safe in people
Senescence-related proteins or other biomarkers Changes in measured biological processes Reversal of aging, prevention of disease or longer life
Molecular “biological-age” clocks Movement in the data used by a particular clock That all tissues aged more slowly or that health improved
Randomized human trials Whether groups assigned to an intervention differ on measured outcomes Permanent effects or lifespan extension when follow-up is short
Clinical outcomes such as mobility or disease events Effects that matter directly to health Which cellular pathway caused the result

This distinction explains why headlines about “reversing aging” often overstate the evidence. The strongest current findings are signals that certain behaviors or diets may alter selected biomarkers or risk factors—not proof that cellular aging has been reversed.

Can exercise reduce the effects of cellular aging?

What the LIFE Study analysis found

An NIA AgingResearchBiobank analysis used data and samples from 1,377 women and men in the LIFE Study. Participants had been randomized to structured physical activity or a healthy-aging intervention. The investigators measured senescence-related biomarkers and examined mobility outcomes.

Across the full cohort, higher activity levels were associated with greater reductions in some measured proteins at 12 months and/or 24 months. The biomarker levels were also associated with mobility outcomes. Those findings make physical activity relevant to research on senescence and functional aging.

There is an important limitation: the reported change in measured senescence biomarkers did not differ between the randomized physical-activity and healthy-aging intervention groups. The association between activity and a protein measurement is not the same as proof that assigning people to an exercise program reverses cellular aging.

What you can reasonably conclude

  • Regular physical activity has established benefits for strength, balance, cardiovascular health, metabolic health and the ability to perform daily activities.
  • The LIFE findings support studying activity as one factor linked with senescence-related biology.
  • The study does not show that exercise removes senescent cells, resets a person’s biological age or extends lifespan.

If you are considering more activity, use goals that have direct health meaning—such as gradually increasing walking, resistance training, balance work or aerobic capacity—rather than chasing a particular biomarker. People with chronic conditions, significant symptoms or limited mobility should ask a qualified clinician how to increase activity safely.

Can fasting or a fasting-mimicking diet slow cellular aging?

Findings from the 2024 NIA summary

An NIA report dated August 8, 2024, described randomized trials of a fasting-mimicking diet involving 100 participants: 48 assigned to regular eating patterns and 52 assigned to the diet. The report described improvements in selected disease-risk factors and biological-age measures. It also noted that some findings remained after accounting for weight loss.

These results are promising but narrow. The trials were small, and the NIA emphasized that longer-term effects and consistency across different populations require more research. The summary does not establish that the diet reduces cellular senescence, prevents disease over decades or extends human lifespan.

Why “fasting” is not one intervention

Time-restricted eating, intermittent fasting, multi-day fasting and a commercially formulated fasting-mimicking diet differ in calories, nutrient composition, duration and medical risks. Results from one protocol cannot be transferred automatically to another. People who are pregnant, underweight, taking glucose-lowering medication, recovering from an eating disorder or managing a chronic illness may face particular risks from unsupervised restriction.

Do not treat a short-term change in a biological-age score as proof that a fasting regimen has repaired cells. If you are interested in calorie restriction or fasting, discuss the specific schedule and your medical history with a clinician or registered dietitian rather than copying a protocol from an animal study or online program.

What the calorie-restriction biomarker evidence says

A separate NIA AgingResearchBiobank record summarized a small subset analysis of the CALERIE calorie-restriction study. The record, describing a December 5, 2024 medRxiv preprint, included 26 calorie-restriction participants and examined GlycAge, an IgG-based surrogate for biological age.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the analysis as described, GlycAge was not different from baseline at 12 or 24 months. This is not a definitive trial result about cellular senescence or clinical aging. It is a useful caution: different biological-age endpoints may move differently, and an intervention can produce a favorable result on one measure without changing another.

Do senolytic drugs and supplements work in humans?

What senolytics are intended to do

Senolytics are drugs or compounds being studied for their ability to selectively eliminate some senescent cells. One frequently discussed combination is dasatinib plus quercetin. Dasatinib is a leukemia chemotherapy drug; quercetin is a plant pigment. Their investigation as a senolytic approach is experimental background, not an approval for anti-aging use.

The NIA says human safety has not been confirmed for routine use and advises against taking senolytics or similar supplements or drugs outside a clinical trial. Potential effects could depend on dose, timing, the tissues targeted and the person’s medical condition. Removing cells that are participating in wound healing or other normal functions could also have unintended consequences.

Why animal results are not enough

Cell-culture and mouse studies can reveal mechanisms and generate hypotheses, but they do not predict every human benefit or adverse effect. Mayo Clinic researcher James Kirkland, M.D., Ph.D., quoted by the NIA, cautioned: “We haven’t so far seen serious or severe adverse events in clinical trials with some of these agents, but it doesn’t mean they won’t happen.” He also noted that adverse effects “could take a long time to develop,” and that findings that sound too good to be true in mice or cell cultures often are.

Until adequately powered, long-term human trials show a meaningful clinical benefit with acceptable risk, senolytics should be regarded as investigational. A supplement label claiming “senescent-cell clearance” is not evidence that the product has been tested for disease prevention, longevity or overall safety.

What biological-age tests can and cannot tell you

Chronological age is the number of years since birth. Biological age is an estimate derived from biological measurements, and different tests define it differently. The NIA’s FY 2026 budget narrative notes that researchers have developed more than 50 molecular clocks, using data such as DNA changes, protein expression and microbiome composition.

Because clocks use different inputs and algorithms, two tests can produce different estimates for the same person. A score may also change because of short-term illness, weight change, medication, laboratory variation or the particular samples analyzed.

  • A lower score on one clock is not proof that every tissue became younger.
  • A higher score is not a diagnosis of disease or a prediction of an individual’s exact lifespan.
  • Validation is still needed to determine which clocks accurately measure biological age or the rate of aging.
  • Testing the same method repeatedly does not make an unvalidated measure clinically meaningful.

Use these tests, if at all, as research-oriented measurements. Decisions about exercise, nutrition, screening or medication should be based on validated clinical indicators and professional medical advice, not on a single consumer aging score.

  1. Define the outcome you care about. Improving mobility, blood pressure, glucose control, sleep or cardiovascular fitness is more actionable than trying to “lower cellular age.”
  2. Choose sustainable activity. Combine appropriately paced aerobic movement with resistance and balance training when your health permits. Increase volume gradually and stop for concerning symptoms.
  3. Use a nutritionally adequate eating pattern. If considering fasting or calorie restriction, obtain individualized guidance and avoid extreme restriction or unmonitored multi-day fasts.
  4. Check the evidence before buying a test or supplement. Ask whether the intervention was studied in humans, whether participants were randomized, what outcome changed, how long follow-up lasted and what harms were observed.
  5. Do not self-prescribe senolytics. Discuss participation in a legitimate clinical trial with a qualified clinician if you want to explore an investigational therapy.
  6. Track validated health measures. Functional ability, clinically measured blood pressure, lipid levels, glucose markers and other standard assessments are generally more useful for health decisions than an isolated molecular-age number.

How to judge a new “cellular aging” claim

When a study or product promises to slow aging, look for six details:

  • Population: Were the participants healthy adults, people with a specific disease, or animals?
  • Comparison: Was there a randomized control group, or only an association between exposure and a marker?
  • Outcome: Did the study measure a protein, a molecular clock, mobility, disease events or survival?
  • Duration: Could the follow-up detect delayed harms or durable benefits?
  • Replication: Have independent groups reproduced the result in different populations?
  • Safety: Were adverse events actively monitored, and is the intervention regulated for the proposed use?

A claim that satisfies only a laboratory marker is much weaker than one showing improved clinical function in a well-designed, long-term human trial. Even a statistically significant biomarker change may not be large enough to matter to daily life.

What would count as convincing evidence?

A credible anti-aging intervention would need more than a lower score on one molecular clock. Researchers would ideally demonstrate a reproducible effect in diverse human populations, show improvement in clinically important outcomes, follow participants long enough to detect delayed harms, and explain which tissues and biological pathways are affected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For senolytics, that would also require evidence that harmful senescent cells are targeted without disrupting beneficial senescence, along with clear dosing and monitoring standards. For diets and exercise, trials would need to separate the effects of weight loss, fitness, sleep and other lifestyle changes from any specific cellular mechanism.

At present, the evidence supports continued research and healthy behaviors with broad benefits. It does not support claiming that cellular aging can be switched off, reversed wholesale or safely treated with an over-the-counter product.
