Yes. If you bought or redeemed a digital Nintendo Switch game, deleting its installed software does not cancel the purchase. Connect the console to the internet, open Virtual Game Cards, choose the Nintendo Account that obtained the game, select the title, and choose Load on This System. The game icon returns to the HOME Menu and the download starts when the software is not already installed.
What Nintendo’s redownload option restores
The redownload process applies to digital games and downloadable content associated with a Nintendo Account. The purchase belongs to the account that bought or redeemed it, not permanently to the console’s storage. Removing the installed software therefore frees space without removing the account’s entitlement.
You still need to use the purchasing account. A different user on the same Switch may be able to play the installed game under Nintendo’s account-sharing rules, but that user will not receive the no-cost redownload option unless the purchasing account is selected. If the console shows a price instead of a redownload command, treat that as an account or purchase-history issue before paying again.

- An internet connection on the Switch or Switch 2.
- Access to the Nintendo Account that purchased or redeemed the game.
- Enough free storage in the console’s internal memory or the inserted microSD card.
- The latest menu labels available on your system; Nintendo’s current instructions cover both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, but system software can change the exact presentation.
A microSD card is optional. It is useful when the internal storage is full, but it is not required simply to redownload a title if the console has enough room.

- Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.
How to redownload a deleted digital game
- Connect to the internet. Confirm that the console is online before opening the card menu. A redownload cannot begin while the system is offline.
- Open Virtual Game Cards from HOME. This menu manages purchased digital games and DLC.
- Choose the purchasing user. Select the Nintendo Account that originally bought or redeemed the title. If several users appear, do not assume the currently active profile is the owner.
- Select the game. Find the deleted title in that account’s virtual game-card list.
- Choose Load on This System. Nintendo uses this command to place the virtual game card on the console. If the software is absent, its icon appears on the HOME Menu and the download begins.
- Wait for installation to finish. Keep the console connected and leave sufficient storage available. You can launch the game after the download and installation complete.
Loading the virtual game card is the key step. Looking only for the old HOME icon will not work after software deletion because deleting the software also removes that icon.
If the game does not appear in Virtual Game Cards
Use Nintendo eShop as a second way to identify the entitlement:
- Open Nintendo eShop and select the user who may have made the purchase.
- Search for the game’s exact title.
- Inspect the product page. A Virtual Game Cards or Purchased indication means the browsing account owns the digital title.
- If the page instead offers Proceed to Purchase or displays a price, stop before confirming payment. Switch to the account that bought the game and check again.
A title can be absent because the wrong user was chosen, because the purchase was made with another Nintendo Account, or because the item is handled through a different download path. Searching the store is therefore a check on ownership, not a reason to buy the game again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy your Switch still shows a price
The most common explanation is that eShop is open under an account other than the purchaser. Nintendo states that only the account that purchased a game can download it at no cost. Sign out of the mistaken user context by returning to the eShop user-selection screen, then select the account that made the transaction.

- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
If you are unsure which account was used, check purchase history on the console or through the Nintendo Account website. Look for the game or DLC in the transaction record, then retry the redownload while signed in as that account. A family member’s profile, a second email address, or an older account can make a legitimate purchase look unowned.
If the purchase record is present but the title still cannot be loaded, Nintendo’s support guidance is to contact Nintendo Support. Have the account details and transaction information available so support can verify the entitlement.
Deleting software is not the same as deleting save data
Nintendo distinguishes the installed game program from the save data created while playing. Its guidance on archiving and deleting downloadable software says those actions free storage without impacting save data. Deleting the game software removes the program; it does not, by itself, erase the progress stored for that title.
| Action | What happens to software | What happens to the HOME icon | Effect on save data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Archive software | The downloadable software is removed to free storage. | The icon remains, providing a shortcut to redownload. | Nintendo says save data is not impacted. |
| Delete software | The downloadable software is removed to free storage. | The icon is removed from HOME. | Nintendo says save data is not impacted. |
| Delete save data | The installed software is a separate matter. | The game can remain installed or be redownloaded independently. | Progress is removed; this is a different operation from deleting software. |
If you want the quickest route back to a deleted title, use Virtual Game Cards. If you want a visible reminder on HOME while reclaiming space, archiving retains the icon.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Choosing internal storage or a microSD card
Downloadable software can be stored on a compatible microSD card. When a card is inserted, Nintendo says it is the default destination for downloads and redownloads. The console therefore may place a recovered game on the card automatically rather than in internal memory.
Check available space before starting. If the chosen storage location is full, free space there or make the necessary storage adjustment before retrying. Removing an old game does not require buying a card; the accessory is an expansion option for a console with limited free space.
Games, DLC, demos and Nintendo Switch Online content are not all delivered identically
The Virtual Game Cards flow is intended for purchased games and downloadable content associated with the account. Nintendo notes that some digital content uses other menus:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Most demos are downloaded through Nintendo eShop rather than restored as a purchased virtual game card.
- Nintendo Switch Online classic-game libraries are downloaded through eShop and depend on the applicable subscription access.
- Subscription-exclusive DLC and game trials may be accessed through Nintendo Switch Online or eShop instead of the standard purchased-game list.
For these items, look in the service or eShop that supplied the content. A missing entry in Virtual Game Cards does not necessarily mean a purchase was lost.

Switch and Switch 2 menu expectations
Nintendo’s current support instructions include both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The account ownership rule and the basic recovery idea are the same: select the owning user, load the virtual game card, and let the system download the software.
Menu wording and placement can change with system software. If you do not see Virtual Game Cards exactly where expected, update the console and look for Nintendo’s current digital-content or virtual-card management option from HOME. Do not infer that a deleted purchase is unavailable solely because a label moved after an update.

The game is listed, but Load on This System is unavailable
- Confirm the console is connected to the internet.
- Check that you selected the purchasing Nintendo Account, not merely the profile that normally plays the game.
- Verify that the title is not already installed or queued for download.
- Check free storage on internal memory and the inserted microSD card.
The game is not listed and eShop shows a price
Return to user selection, choose the account that made the purchase, and search again. Then inspect purchase history. Do not complete a second transaction until the original account and record have been checked.

The purchase appears in history but downloading still fails
Retry from Virtual Game Cards after confirming the internet connection and storage. If the entitlement remains unavailable despite a matching purchase record, use Nintendo Support’s account-help route rather than repurchasing.

The game icon disappeared
That is expected after choosing Delete software. Use Virtual Game Cards to load it again; the icon should return when the download is initiated.
You deleted the save data by mistake
Redownloading the game restores the software, not progress that was separately erased. Software recovery and save-data recovery are separate tasks, so check which deletion command was used before troubleshooting the download.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing the wrong user in Virtual Game Cards or eShop.
- Paying again when the store displays a price without first checking purchase history.
- Assuming deletion of the game program also deleted saved progress.
- Assuming every demo, classic-library title, trial or subscription DLC item appears in Virtual Game Cards.
- Starting a download without checking the destination storage, especially when a microSD card is inserted.
Bottom line
A deleted digital Nintendo Switch game can be downloaded again at no additional charge through the Nintendo Account that purchased or redeemed it. Use HOME > Virtual Game Cards, select the owning user and title, then choose Load on This System. If the title is missing or priced, verify the account and purchase history before doing anything else. Nintendo says archiving or deleting the software does not affect save data, while demos, Nintendo Switch Online libraries and certain subscription content may require their own eShop or service download path.
