Yes—some tokenized Bitcoin can be redeemed for native BTC, but there is no universal redemption method. The correct route depends on the exact token, blockchain, and provider. WBTC generally uses an authorized merchant and custodian; Threshold’s tBTC can be burned in the Threshold app for BTC sent to a Bitcoin address you control. An exchange or decentralized swap is a separate conversion route and may return another token rather than native BTC.
Start by identifying the token and network
“Tokenized Bitcoin” describes several products, not one standardized asset. Before sending anything, copy the asset’s exact name and contract address from your wallet, then note the network holding it. WBTC on Ethereum is not handled the same way as tBTC on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Starknet, or Sui. A route that accepts one token or chain may reject another, and sending to an unsupported network can make recovery difficult or impossible.
The two documented models covered here are:
- WBTC: direct redemption is arranged through an authorized merchant. The merchant receives and burns WBTC, after which the custodian releases an equivalent amount of BTC. WBTC documentation also lists centralized exchanges, decentralized exchanges, and on-chain protocols as conversion venues; those swaps should not be confused with the merchant burn-and-release process. See the WBTC FAQ and WBTC whitepaper.
- tBTC: Threshold describes a permissionless app flow in which you burn tBTC on its deployment chain, provide a Bitcoin address you control, and receive native BTC at a 1:1 ratio before fees. The page says no authorized merchant, account, or KYC is required for that route. See Threshold tBTC.
If your asset is neither WBTC nor tBTC, use the issuer’s own documentation. Do not apply either set of instructions to an unfamiliar wrapped or synthetic BTC token.

Direct authorized-merchant redemption
In the direct model, the holder uses a supported merchant rather than contacting the custodian directly. The merchant receives WBTC and arranges its burn. Once the burn is processed, the custodian releases an equivalent amount of BTC to the destination specified by the merchant’s workflow. The WBTC whitepaper describes minting and burning as arrangements between trusted institutions, so the user-facing instructions, minimums, identity checks, and payout details come from the selected merchant.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
The WBTC FAQ describes conversion as sending WBTC through a supported route and receiving BTC. It also points users to centralized exchanges, decentralized exchanges, and on-chain protocols. An exchange or DEX may simply trade WBTC for BTC, wrapped BTC, a stablecoin, or another asset. Only a route that explicitly accepts WBTC for redemption and sends BTC to a Bitcoin address should be treated as a direct withdrawal to the Bitcoin network.
Typical merchant workflow
- Confirm the route. Check that the merchant supports your WBTC contract and network, accepts your jurisdiction, and currently offers BTC withdrawal rather than only an internal balance or token swap.
- Complete any required onboarding. The WBTC press release describes AML/KYC checks in the merchant flow. That document describes the model, not a universal rule for every current provider, so read the selected merchant’s current terms at the time of redemption: WBTC press release.
- Request the redemption quote. Review the WBTC amount, merchant charge, custodian charge if shown, network costs, minimum amount, and the exact BTC payout address requirements before approving a transfer.
- Send WBTC only after verifying the deposit details. Match the network in your wallet to the network shown by the merchant. A small test transfer is prudent when the route permits it and the minimum is low enough.
- Wait for the burn and release. The merchant coordinates the WBTC burn and custodian payout. Keep the transaction IDs and support reference until the BTC appears in your wallet and has the required Bitcoin confirmations.
Neither the reviewed WBTC FAQ nor whitepaper establishes one universal consumer minimum or processing-time guarantee. Those values can differ by merchant, jurisdiction, liquidity arrangement, and transaction size.
How Threshold tBTC redemption works
What the documented flow does
Threshold’s page says a holder can burn tBTC through the Threshold app, enter a Bitcoin address under the holder’s control, and receive native BTC at a 1:1 ratio before the stated fee. The signer set releases the BTC; there is no authorized merchant in this model. The same page states that the route does not require an account or KYC.

The page lists Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Starknet, and Sui as supported networks when it was accessed. Deployments can change, so check the app and current documentation immediately before a transaction rather than relying on a saved list.

Step-by-step tBTC redemption
- Open the official Threshold app. Connect the wallet that holds tBTC and confirm that the app recognizes the correct deployment chain.
- Choose redemption and enter a Bitcoin address. Use an address generated by a wallet you control. Check every character, the address format requested by the app, and whether the wallet is prepared to receive the expected Bitcoin transaction.
- Review the quote. Threshold states a 0.2% mint and redemption fee on its page accessed in 2026. The page also says T staking can partially or fully offset fees through the Threshold Unified Bitcoin Router, with waivers applied automatically when eligible.
- Approve the on-chain transaction. Your wallet will charge the deployment network’s transaction fee in addition to the protocol fee. Confirm the contract, amount, and destination before signing.
- Monitor both chains. Keep the tBTC burn transaction hash and watch for the Bitcoin transaction from the signer set. Wait for the confirmation level your receiving wallet or exchange requires.
The 1:1 wording refers to the BTC amount represented by the burned tBTC before fees; it does not mean the final wallet balance is identical after the 0.2% charge and any network costs.
Exchange and DEX swaps are a different route
You may be able to sell tokenized BTC for BTC on a centralized exchange, or swap it through a decentralized exchange. This can be simpler for small amounts when a liquid market exists, but it is not automatically a protocol redemption. A DEX transaction can produce another on-chain token, while a centralized exchange may credit an internal BTC balance and require a separate Bitcoin-network withdrawal.
- Confirm that the destination asset is native BTC, not another wrapped token.
- Check whether withdrawals go to a Bitcoin address or remain inside the platform.
- Review slippage, trading fees, withdrawal fees, minimum withdrawal amounts, and network support.
- Verify that the platform accepts your country and account status; exchange requirements are provider-specific.
Do not send WBTC or tBTC directly to a Bitcoin-only deposit address. Ethereum-style token transfers and Bitcoin transactions use different networks and address systems.

| Route | Documented fee information | Other possible costs |
|---|---|---|
| WBTC direct merchant redemption | The whitepaper identifies custodian fees and merchant fees but gives no single universal retail amount. | Token-network transaction fee, Bitcoin-network payout fee, and any provider-specific minimum or spread. |
| WBTC exchange or DEX conversion | Not fixed by WBTC documentation; the venue sets trading, liquidity, and withdrawal charges. | Slippage, gas, account fees, and Bitcoin withdrawal fee. |
| Threshold tBTC redemption | 0.2% mint and redemption fee stated by Threshold on the page accessed in 2026; eligible T staking may partially or fully offset it through the router. | Deployment-chain transaction fee and any Bitcoin-network costs reflected by the route. |
The WBTC whitepaper says transfers between users have no WBTC-specific cost apart from network fees. That statement does not promise a free merchant redemption or a free exchange withdrawal. Always request the current quote immediately before signing, because fees and liquidity can change.

Timing: what is known and what is not
There is no reliable universal redemption-time estimate in the reviewed WBTC materials. A merchant may need to complete compliance checks, wait for token confirmations, coordinate the custodian burn, and then broadcast a Bitcoin transaction. Congestion, transaction size, internal approval policies, and the merchant’s operating hours can all affect the result.
Threshold states that minting typically takes one to two hours depending on Bitcoin confirmations. That statement is about creating tBTC, not redeeming it, and should not be presented as a tBTC redemption guarantee. The reviewed Threshold page does not provide a general redemption duration.
For any route, separate these stages when estimating time:

Troubleshooting common failures
The app does not recognize your token
Switch the wallet to the chain where the token is actually held, confirm the contract address from the issuer’s documentation, and avoid importing a similarly named token from an unverified contract. If the route still does not support it, do not force a transaction; use a documented exchange or bridge only after confirming the destination asset and chain.
Your transaction is pending
Check the source-chain explorer for confirmation status and nonce errors. A pending approval is not the same as a completed burn. Do not submit repeated transactions until you understand whether the wallet is replacing the original transaction or creating a duplicate request.
BTC has not arrived
Locate the provider’s processing reference and determine whether a Bitcoin transaction has been broadcast. If a transaction ID exists, check it on a Bitcoin explorer and compare its confirmation count with the receiving wallet’s requirement. If no transaction has been broadcast after the provider’s stated processing window, contact that provider with the token transaction hash, amount, destination address, and support reference—never send additional funds to “unlock” a payout.
You used the wrong network or address
Stop and contact the route provider immediately. Blockchain transfers are generally irreversible, and recovery depends on the recipient controlling the mistaken destination. Do not publish private keys or seed phrases to support staff or anyone claiming to be a recovery agent.

| Published redemption time | No general estimate established. | No redemption estimate established; the one-to-two-hour figure concerns minting. |
How to choose the safest route
For a large WBTC position, a documented merchant quote can provide a clearer custody and payout process than an illiquid market, but it may involve onboarding and additional fees. For tBTC, the Threshold app’s direct burn path avoids a merchant account according to Threshold’s documentation, while still requiring careful address and network verification. For a small amount, an exchange or DEX can be practical when liquidity and native-BTC withdrawal are clearly shown; compare the total received, not just the headline trading fee.
Whichever route you choose, make a written record of the token contract, source chain, destination Bitcoin address, quoted amount, fee breakdown, transaction hashes, and support reference. This information is essential if processing stalls and helps you detect a phishing page or an altered address before signing.
Bottom line
Tokenized Bitcoin can sometimes be redeemed for native BTC, but “tokenized BTC” is not a single product. WBTC’s direct path uses an authorized merchant and custodian, with provider-specific fees and compliance checks. Threshold’s tBTC path burns tBTC in its app and sends BTC to your address, with a stated 0.2% mint/redemption fee and no KYC for that described route. Neither set of sources promises a universal redemption time. Identify the exact token and network, verify the current route’s limits and destination, and treat exchange swaps as conversions rather than automatic protocol redemptions.
