Usually, no. A completed USDT0 transfer on Polygon cannot be reversed by the sender or by the blockchain. You should still act immediately: preserve the transaction and scam evidence, report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and local law enforcement, and notify any exchange or custodial service involved through its official support channel. Recovery is possible only in limited circumstances, such as an identifiable service being able to freeze funds under its own process or legal authority. No report or recovery service can guarantee a refund.
What “recovering USDT0” can and cannot mean
There are two different questions after a scam payment:
- Can the Polygon network undo the transfer? No. Once a transaction is confirmed, the sender cannot cancel it, roll it back, or reclaim the tokens through a wallet setting.
- Can people or institutions later locate or freeze the funds? Sometimes, but only through investigation, a service’s internal controls, or legal process. That is not the same as reversing the original transaction, and it does not guarantee that the money will be returned.
The FBI describes cryptocurrency transactions as irrevocable. Public ledgers can help investigators follow movements between addresses, but tracing alone does not seize assets or put them back in your wallet. The circumstances that matter most are where the tokens went, whether they remain identifiable, and whether a platform or authority can lawfully intervene.

USDT0 on Polygon: identify the asset before you report it
Polygon announced that its Polygon PoS deployment moved from the previous bridged-USDT arrangement to native USDT0 on August 27, 2025. The migration notice said users did not need to take action. The official USDT0 Polygon page lists this token contract:

Check the complete contract address against the live USDT0 Polygon page, rather than relying on a token name, logo, or search result. A token can share a familiar name while using a different contract. The contract check identifies the asset and network context; it does not prove that the recipient was the scammer’s intended address, that the funds are still there, or that anyone can freeze them.
Polygon’s rollout and no-action guidance are documented in its August 27, 2025 migration announcement and the August 13, 2025 portal maintenance notice.

Do these things immediately
1. Stop communicating and send nothing else
End contact with the scammer and do not pay a “tax,” release fee, verification amount, gas deposit, or recovery charge. Scammers often change the story after the first payment and use urgency to obtain a second one. Preserve the conversation instead of deleting it: save the profile, usernames, phone numbers, email addresses, websites, payment instructions, and any invoices or receipts.
2. Capture complete transaction evidence
Write down the transaction hash before links, chats, or wallet histories disappear. Also preserve:

- the sending and receiving addresses, copied in full;
- the asset name and amount;
- the Polygon network and the date and time, including your time zone;
- the wallet or exchange used to send the payment;
- screenshots of the wallet confirmation and the transaction status;
- the scammer’s messages, identities, domain names, social accounts, and payment directions; and
- records of any related bank, card, or exchange payments.
The FBI’s guidance for cryptocurrency scam victims asks for the cryptocurrency address, amount and type, date and time, and transaction ID or hash. Do not edit screenshots in a way that removes the hash or address; keep an untouched copy and make working copies if you need to redact personal information for sharing.
3. Report promptly to IC3 and local law enforcement
Submit a report through the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center as soon as practical, or contact a local FBI field office and your local police department. Include the transaction details and a concise timeline: how contact began, what the scammer promised, when you sent the USDT0, and what happened afterward.

4. Notify the service that may control the next address
If you sent from an exchange, broker, payment app, or hosted wallet, use support details reached independently through that service’s official website or app. Provide the hash, recipient address, amount, and a police or IC3 report number when available. Ask whether the service has a fraud escalation process and explain that the destination is associated with a scam.
If the receiving address is a known deposit address at an exchange or another identifiable service, notify that service as well. It may be able to flag or restrict an account under its internal rules or in response to legal process. It cannot undo the Polygon transaction, and it may be unable to disclose account information or act without a formal request.

What the destination address tells you
The recipient type affects who should be notified, not whether recovery is guaranteed.

A blockchain record can show movements between addresses and timestamps. It cannot by itself reveal the real-world owner, compel a platform to cooperate, or prove that an address still holds your USDT0.
Protect assets and accounts that remain under your control
If you disclosed a wallet seed phrase or private key, treat that wallet as compromised. Move remaining assets to a newly created, securely controlled wallet using a device and wallet setup you trust. Do not enter a seed phrase into a website, send it to support, or give it to someone claiming to be an investigator. If you only approved a transaction without revealing signing credentials, review and revoke risky token approvals using a reputable wallet-security workflow, and change passwords for any connected accounts where reuse is possible.
This step protects what has not been stolen; it cannot recover the completed USDT0 transfer. Keep the original wallet and transaction records available for investigators rather than erasing them.
Recovery scams are often the second loss
The FBI warns about companies and individuals that claim they can recover cryptocurrency for an upfront fee. They may demand additional payments, impersonate law enforcement, or say that a special authorization is needed before funds can be released. The FBI states that “Private sector recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency” in its August 11, 2023 warning.

Be especially suspicious of unsolicited contacts that mention your exact transaction, promise guaranteed recovery, or ask for your seed phrase, private key, exchange password, or a payment in cryptocurrency. The FBI also advises: “Be wary of anyone claiming they can recover your funds as this may be another scam” (August 24, 2023 victim guidance).
- Do not pay a recovery deposit, “lawyer,” “miner,” “税,” or release charge to an unverified party.
- Do not install remote-access software at a stranger’s request.
- Do not trust screenshots of supposed recovered balances; verify everything through your own wallet and official channels.
- Forward new scam messages to law enforcement as additional evidence instead of continuing the conversation.
Exchanges freeze accounts only under their own procedures or in response to legal process. A private tracing service may produce a report, but a report is not a seizure order and does not itself return tokens.
How to check that your report is accurate
- Open the wallet or exchange record for the payment and copy the transaction hash, not just the recipient’s display name.
- Confirm that the transaction is on Polygon and that the token contract matches
0xc2132D05D31c914a87C6611C10748AEb04B58e8Fif the payment was native USDT0. - Compare the receiving address character by character with the address supplied in the scam conversation.
- Record the amount in the token’s units and the equivalent date and time shown by the wallet or exchange.
- Attach the original evidence and explain any uncertainty, such as a copied address that may have been altered by malware or a payment routed through an exchange.
Never post your seed phrase or private key in an IC3 report, support ticket, social post, or recovery form. Transaction hashes and public addresses are different from signing credentials, but they still reveal financial information, so share them only with legitimate reporting and service channels.

Funds remain at a service that can identify the account
This is the most actionable scenario. The service may place an internal hold or respond to a law-enforcement request. Timing, eligibility, and disclosure rules are controlled by that service; there is no automatic refund mechanism on Polygon.

Investigators may still follow the public trail, but each transfer can reduce the practical chance of a freeze. If assets reach an overseas platform, the FBI notes that the investigation may be harder.

Funds remain in a self-custody address
A visible balance does not mean anyone can take it. Access normally requires control of the private key or lawful action directed at a person or service that controls the assets.
These are investigative possibilities, not predictions for an individual case. No case-specific recovery decision can be made without the transaction hash, destination history, and information held by relevant platforms or authorities.
Why the scale of crypto fraud does not predict your odds
The FBI’s August 11, 2023 alert reported more than $2.5 billion in cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses in 2022. That figure covers reported investment fraud, not every type of crypto scam and not your particular USDT0 transfer. It demonstrates the scale of reported harm, but it is not a recovery-rate statistic.
Bottom line for a Polygon USDT0 scam payment
Assume the transfer is final, preserve every identifying detail, report it quickly, and notify any exchange or service that might control the destination. Your best chance comes from rapid, accurate reporting while the funds and associated accounts remain traceable. Do not send more money or surrender credentials to anyone promising a guaranteed recovery.
