Sometimes—but recovery is uncertain, and what you do next matters. Stop using the formatted drive, check for a backup, and send any recovery attempt to a different physical drive. New activity can overwrite file data that might otherwise remain recoverable, and overwritten data may not be retrievable.

What to do immediately after formatting a drive

  1. Stop using the affected drive. Disconnect an external drive if it is safe to do so. If it is your Windows system drive, avoid unnecessary use and do not download or install recovery software onto it. Microsoft explains that new files can overwrite space where deleted data remains: Windows File Recovery.
  2. Do not format it again or create a new partition. Do not save recovered files to the formatted drive. Keep the source and recovery destination on separate physical drives; if needed, use a USB or external drive as the destination. The destination’s capacity should be sufficient for the files you expect to recover, but it does not improve the source drive’s recoverability.
  3. Check backups before scanning. A backup restore is often simpler than attempting a scan, but it can restore only files that were actually backed up or synced.

Check whether a backup can restore your files

On Windows, check File History if you had configured it to use an external drive or network location. It can restore saved versions of personal files. Also check OneDrive for folders you had selected to sync through Windows Backup. These are backup and sync routes, not scans of the formatted disk. Microsoft’s overview explains the options: Backup, restore, and recovery in Windows.

System Restore is not a way to retrieve personal documents, photos, or other files; it is intended to revert system files, settings, and programs.

Choose a recovery route

Software recovery may be reasonable if the drive is detected consistently and behaves normally. The choice depends on your operating system, the file system, whether the drive appears physically healthy, and whether keeping original file and folder names is important.

Existing backup, File History, or OneDrive You had a backup or sync configured before the format. Only backed-up or synced items can be restored. See Microsoft’s Windows backup overview.
Windows File Recovery You use Windows and want Microsoft’s command-line tool for local storage. Requires command-line syntax and a separate destination drive. Mode depends on the file system and situation. See Microsoft’s instructions.
PhotoRec The partition was reformatted or the file system is corrupted. Recovered files may not retain original names or folder structure. See CGSecurity’s PhotoRec guide.
TestDisk You lost a partition, or need to consider certain deleted FAT/NTFS files and original names matter. Its suitability depends on the loss scenario; CGSecurity recommends it before PhotoRec in these cases. See CGSecurity’s guide.
Professional recovery help The drive has signs of physical failure or the data is exceptionally valuable. Results, service availability, and cost depend on the provider; no outcome is guaranteed.

If the disk makes unusual mechanical noises, repeatedly disconnects, or is not detected reliably, avoid repeated DIY scans. Consider qualified professional help instead, especially when the data is exceptionally valuable.

Recover files with Windows File Recovery

The source is the formatted drive; the destination must be a different physical drive. Check the drive letters carefully before running a command—do not assume an example’s letters match your computer. Microsoft says to use Extensive mode for a formatted NTFS disk, and also recommends Extensive mode for FAT and exFAT. Filters can narrow the scan by path, filename, extension, or wildcard.

  1. Install or open Windows File Recovery without writing the installation or recovered output to the affected drive. The utility is distributed through the Microsoft Store; check Microsoft’s current documentation for availability and instructions.
  2. Connect a separate destination drive and identify the correct source and destination letters in Windows.
  3. Run the command using the actual drive letters and the appropriate mode. For example, Microsoft’s documentation gives this filtered example: Winfr C: E: /extensive /n *.pdf /n *.docx. It searches for PDF and DOCX files from C: and writes results to E:; substitute the letters only after verifying which drive is the source and which is the destination.
  4. Wait for the scan to finish. Extensive scans can take time, particularly on large disks. Windows File Recovery creates a Recovery_<date and time> folder on the destination.

The utility does not support recovery from cloud storage or network file shares. Its available modes and switches can change, so follow the current Microsoft command reference for the installed version.

Recover files with PhotoRec

CGSecurity describes PhotoRec as a way to recover data from a reformatted partition or corrupted file system. Its workflow is to launch the program with sufficient permissions, select the affected disk and partition, choose the search scope and file types as appropriate, and specify a destination directory on a separate drive. The step-by-step instructions are in the PhotoRec guide.

PhotoRec can place results in numbered folders such as recup_dir.1 and recup_dir.2. Its file-carving approach may not restore the original folder structure or filenames, so sorting and identifying results can take time. The guide notes that dates may be taken from metadata in file headers. If you have lost a partition or deleted FAT/NTFS files and original filenames matter, CGSecurity says TestDisk may be the better first option in those situations.

Check and preserve recovered files

  • Open a sample of recovered documents, photos, and other important files to check that they are complete and usable.
  • Keep recovered files on the separate destination drive and make another copy if the files are important.
  • Do not reuse or reformat the source drive until you have finished recovery decisions.

What determines whether recovery works?

Recovery depends on whether the file data still exists and has not been overwritten. Microsoft warns that continued computer use can overwrite free space; overwritten data may be unrecoverable, with particular concern for SSDs. The available guidance does not establish a reliable success percentage, and formatting does not guarantee that files can—or cannot—be recovered. No tool or scan can promise intact results.
