Armor sold to a vendor may be recoverable: return to the vendor, open Buyback, and repurchase it while it is still listed. Armor salvaged at the blacksmith is permanently destroyed, and Blizzard says Customer Support cannot restore Diablo IV items that were deleted or salvaged. Check Buyback immediately before leaving your session.

Sold and salvaged armor follow different rules

The word “lost” covers two different actions in Diablo IV. Selling sends the item to a vendor’s temporary Buyback list. Salvaging sends it to the blacksmith’s recycling process and destroys the item. Your recovery options depend entirely on which action occurred.

Action you took Where the item went Recovery mechanism What to do
Sold armor The vendor’s Buyback list Repurchase while the item remains listed Return to the selling vendor and check Buyback immediately
Salvaged or recycled armor Destroyed at the blacksmith None; Blizzard says support cannot restore it Stop looking for an undo function and replace the item through normal gameplay

There is no published percentage, recovery rate, or universal time limit that applies to every case. The practical question is whether the armor is still visible in Buyback or has already been salvaged or purged.

How to recover armor you sold

A vendor sale is the one situation in which recovery is supported. Blizzard’s Diablo IV support guidance says sold items can be repurchased from the vendor’s Buyback tab. The listing is temporary, so treat this as an immediate recovery task rather than something to postpone.

Sale
Diablo IV - Xbox Series X

  1. Return to the vendor that bought the armor. Use the vendor involved in the sale rather than assuming another merchant will display the same item.
  2. Open the Buyback tab. This is the part of the vendor interface that lists eligible items you recently sold.
  3. Identify the armor before confirming the purchase. Check the item’s displayed details carefully so you do not buy a different piece from the list.
  4. Repurchase it while it is listed. Once the item is no longer shown, Blizzard’s support article provides no additional recovery method.

Do this before leaving the session if possible. Buyback is not described as a permanent archive, and the support guidance makes the item’s continued presence in the list the deciding condition. If you can see the armor there, the vendor interface—not a support ticket—is the recovery route.

If the armor is missing from Buyback

An absent item has no supported second path in the published Diablo IV instructions. Recheck that you are using the vendor associated with the sale and that you are viewing Buyback, not the normal purchase inventory. If the item still does not appear, the available guidance does not promise restoration through another vendor, a reload, or Customer Support.

Keep the distinction clear when describing the incident: “sold but no longer listed” is different from “salvaged.” The first is a Buyback-list problem with no further method stated by Blizzard; the second is a permanent destruction event.

What happens when you salvage armor

Salvaging is not a reversible sale. The blacksmith’s salvage operation recycles the selected armor and destroys the item. Blizzard states that Customer Support cannot restore Diablo IV items that were deleted or salvaged, including equipment lost through an accidental salvage.

That means there is no Diablo IV equivalent of opening a trash folder, reversing the last blacksmith action, or asking support to place the exact armor back into your inventory. Once the piece has been salvaged, its original item is gone. Any materials obtained during the operation do not create a restoration record for that armor.

If you are uncertain whether you clicked Salvage or Sell, check the vendor’s Buyback tab first. A visible listing indicates a sale. No listing does not prove salvage by itself, but it means the documented Buyback recovery route is unavailable; Blizzard does not offer a separate restoration promise for that situation.

Why general Blizzard restoration pages can be confusing

Blizzard publishes a general Item Restoration article that discusses restoration behavior for some other Blizzard game systems. That page also warns that purged items disappear permanently. It should not be read as a guarantee that Diablo IV salvage can be undone.

The Diablo IV-specific rule controls this question: sold gear can be repurchased through Buyback while listed, whereas deleted or salvaged Diablo IV items cannot be restored by Customer Support. The broader restoration article does not change the blacksmith’s permanent-destruction rule.

“Customer Support cannot assist with recovering purged items.”

“Purged” is important wording here. It describes an item that has been permanently removed from the relevant game system; it is not a name for a hidden Diablo IV backup. Treat generic restoration instructions as game-specific unless they explicitly identify Diablo IV and the action you took.

Immediate triage after an accidental loss

Use this sequence as soon as you notice that armor is missing. It prevents a recoverable sale from becoming a missed Buyback opportunity and avoids wasting time on an unsupported salvage restoration request.

  1. Stop cleanup actions. Do not continue selling or salvaging while you are trying to identify what happened. Additional transactions can make the original item harder to locate in a temporary list.
  2. Classify the action. Recall whether you selected a vendor sale or the blacksmith’s salvage function. The recovery rules are different.
  3. For a sale, return to the selling vendor. Open Buyback immediately and look for the armor.
  4. If it is listed, repurchase it now. Do not leave the recovery for later; the list is temporary.
  5. If it was salvaged, stop seeking a reversal. Blizzard’s Diablo IV guidance says Customer Support cannot restore the item.
  6. If you cannot establish the action, use the evidence available in-game. A Buyback listing is evidence of a recoverable sale. A completed blacksmith salvage is a permanent loss under the published rule.

This procedure is intentionally short because delay matters only in the sale case. There is no comparable time window to preserve after a confirmed salvage; the documented outcome is permanent destruction.

Prevent accidental sales and salvages with Favorites

Before sorting a valuable piece, favorite it. A Blizzard-hosted Diablo IV forum discussion explains that favoriting gear prevents it from being salvaged or sold. This is the most direct preventive control identified for both accidental actions.

A safer inventory routine

  1. Mark valuable armor as a favorite before cleanup. Include pieces you may want for another build, items with an important power, and equipment you are keeping for comparison.
  2. Separate decisions from disposal. Decide what to keep before opening the vendor or blacksmith workflow. Do not evaluate an item for the first time while rapidly confirming transactions.
  3. Verify the protection state. Confirm that the favorite marker is present before salvaging or selling the remaining gear.
  4. Process only the unprotected items. Favoriting is useful only if you apply it before the destructive action.

Favorites are a prevention measure, not a recovery mechanism. They cannot bring back armor that was already sold and removed from Buyback or armor that has already been salvaged.

Common situations and their outcomes

You sold a rare chest piece and noticed immediately

Return to the vendor that purchased it and open Buyback. If the chest piece appears, repurchase it before leaving the session. This is the supported recovery path for a sale.

You salvaged an item while clearing the blacksmith screen

The armor has been destroyed by the salvage operation. Blizzard’s Diablo IV support rule says Customer Support cannot restore salvaged items, so there is no supported undo procedure to follow.

You sold the armor, but Buyback no longer shows it

The item is no longer available through the documented mechanism. Blizzard’s Diablo IV article gives no additional recovery method once the item is absent from Buyback.

You read that Blizzard restores items in another game

Do not transfer that rule to Diablo IV. The general Item Restoration guidance covers other game systems and permanent purges; Diablo IV salvage remains irreversible under the game-specific support guidance.

You are unsure whether the item was sold or salvaged

Check Buyback first. A listing means you can use the vendor to recover it. If it is not listed, the available documentation does not establish another way to restore it, and a confirmed salvage is permanent.

What Blizzard has and has not established

The published guidance establishes the recovery mechanism, the permanent nature of salvage, and the role of favorites in preventing both sale and salvage. It does not publish a numeric statistic for how often players recover armor, a universal duration for every Buyback listing, or an alternative support process for an item that has disappeared from that list.

Those limits matter when planning your response. Do not infer a guaranteed number of Buyback slots, a fixed number of minutes, or a hidden support exception from general Blizzard restoration information. The reliable decision rule is state-based: listed in Buyback means repurchase is possible; salvaged or purged means restoration is not available through Customer Support.

A repeatable cleanup workflow

For future inventory maintenance, make protection the first step rather than an emergency measure. Favorite anything that must not be sold or salvaged, then review the remaining items deliberately. If you later discover a mistake, classify it immediately and use the corresponding path: vendor Buyback for a listed sale, and no restoration request for a completed salvage.

That workflow keeps the two systems separate in your mind and reduces the main source of confusion: assuming that every removed item has the same recovery option. In Diablo IV, the action that removed the armor determines whether it can return.
