Usually, yes—if your secret recovery phrase remains private and you still know any passphrase used with it. The hardware wallet is a signing and key-protection interface; your cryptocurrency remains on its blockchain. The recovery phrase is the backup from which the wallet’s private keys are derived. Restore that backup on a trusted, compatible replacement, verify the restored accounts and addresses on the device screen, and move the assets to a newly generated wallet if the old device or phrase could have been exposed.

If the recovery phrase is lost, or a required passphrase is forgotten, recovery may be impossible. A stolen device by itself is not equivalent to a stolen wallet backup, but a tampered device, a photographed phrase, phishing, or entering the phrase into software should be treated as a potential compromise.

What actually controls your cryptocurrency?

Your coins and tokens are recorded on their respective blockchains. A hardware wallet does not contain the assets; it protects the private keys that authorize transactions and displays transaction details for you to approve. Those keys are derived from a secret recovery phrase (also called a wallet backup or seed phrase).

Anyone who obtains the correct phrase can generally recreate the same wallet on compatible software or hardware and sign transactions. Conversely, possession of the physical device normally is not enough to recover the accounts without the PIN or backup, depending on the device’s security design. The decisive question after theft is therefore: is the recovery phrase, and any associated passphrase, still secret?

What to do immediately after a wallet is stolen

  1. Do not disclose the recovery phrase. Ignore messages, calls, or websites asking you to “verify,” “synchronize,” or “secure” the wallet. A legitimate support process will not need you to send the phrase to another person.
  2. Assess what else may have been accessed. Determine whether the thief could also reach a written or metal backup, a photograph, cloud storage, a password manager entry, a computer where the phrase was typed, or a passphrase note. Consider the phrase compromised if any of those exposures are plausible.
  3. Check the wallet from a trusted environment. Use a clean computer and the manufacturer’s official application. Look for unauthorized transactions, new receiving addresses, or token approvals you did not create. A lack of visible activity does not prove the backup is safe; an attacker may wait.
  4. Prepare a trusted replacement. Obtain a compatible device through an authorized channel, validate it in the official application, and initialize or restore it only in the device’s documented workflow.
  5. Restore, verify, and migrate. Restore the old backup only when the replacement and computer are trusted. Confirm account balances and receiving addresses on the hardware display, not just in the computer application. Then create a completely new wallet with a newly generated phrase and transfer the assets to it if the old device or phrase may have been exposed.
  6. Retire the old backup. After migration, stop using the old phrase. Destroy or securely archive it according to your incident plan; do not leave a possibly exposed phrase in active use.

Ledger summarizes the recovery dependency directly: “Your Secret Recovery Phrase is the only way to recover your Ledger accounts if your device is lost, damaged, or stolen.” The same principle applies to compatible wallets that use a recovery backup.

When a stolen device can be restored safely

If the phrase was generated by you, stored offline, and never shown to anyone or entered into software, a stolen device can usually be replaced. The replacement must support the same blockchain networks, account standards, and derivation paths used by the original wallet. Restore through the manufacturer’s official instructions, then verify that the expected accounts and addresses appear.

Verify the restored accounts

  • Compare the first receiving address shown on the replacement’s secure display with an address you previously recorded.
  • Check balances on the blockchain or in the official wallet application.
  • For each important network, confirm that the account type and derivation path match the original. A correct phrase with a different path can appear to contain no funds even though the keys are valid.
  • Send a small test amount to a newly generated destination before moving a large balance, when network fees and the asset make that practical.

Recovery restores keys and accounts derived from the backup. It does not necessarily restore a device PIN, device name, interface preferences, or other device-specific data. Trezor’s terms explicitly exclude those items from what a wallet backup recovers.

What changes if the wallet may have been tampered with?

Tampering changes the risk assessment because a device can be genuine-looking yet unsafe. A pre-completed recovery phrase or PIN is a clear warning sign: do not use that device, and never transfer funds to it. An authentic product should let you generate a new phrase during setup rather than handing you a phrase prepared by someone else.

On October 15, 2026, Ledger reported an attack in which criminals bought genuine devices, opened them, installed hidden components intended to capture recovery phrases, and returned the devices to distribution through some Southeast Asian resellers. The report describes the method, not a general loss rate. The practical lesson is that packaging and branding alone are not proof of an uncompromised supply chain.

If you have not entered a phrase on the suspect device

  1. Disconnect it and do not initialize it with valuable funds.
  2. Do not type an existing phrase or passphrase into it.
  3. Contact the manufacturer through its official support channel if you need to document the incident, but do not reveal the phrase.
  4. Acquire a replacement from an authorized channel, validate it in the official application, and generate a fresh wallet.
  5. If the old wallet’s backup is still believed private, restore it only on the trusted replacement and transfer assets to the newly generated wallet.

If you entered the phrase on the suspect device

Assume the phrase is exposed. Do not wait for an unauthorized transaction. On a trusted replacement, generate a new wallet with a new phrase, verify its receiving addresses on the device display, and transfer every asset from the old accounts. A transfer protects the assets from future use of the old keys; it cannot make the old phrase secret again.

How passphrases affect recovery

A BIP-39 passphrase is an additional secret used with the recovery phrase. It changes the master-seed derivation and therefore creates a distinct wallet tree. The same phrase with two different passphrases produces two different sets of accounts.

Exact spelling is required

Passphrases are case-sensitive and space-sensitive. A missing character, different capitalization, or an extra space derives a different wallet. If you restore the phrase but see empty accounts, check whether the original wallet used a passphrase and reproduce it exactly.

A passphrase is not a replacement for the phrase

You need both components to recover passphrase-derived accounts: the original recovery phrase and the exact passphrase. Trezor’s terms warn that forgetting the passphrase can prevent recovery of the keys and funds derived from it. A passphrase stored in the same place as the phrase may defeat the separation that the extra secret was intended to provide, while a passphrase stored nowhere can make the account permanently inaccessible.

Separate the recovery decision from the PIN

A device PIN protects access to that physical device. It is not the backup from which accounts are reconstructed. Replacing the device normally means choosing a new PIN; knowing the old PIN does not compensate for a lost phrase or forgotten passphrase.

Situation Can the old accounts usually be recovered? Safest next action
Device stolen; phrase and passphrase remain private Yes, on a compatible trusted replacement Restore, verify accounts and addresses on-device, then consider migration to a new wallet
Phrase may have been photographed, copied, phished, or typed into software The keys can be reconstructed, but the old wallet should be treated as compromised Generate a new wallet and transfer assets immediately
Suspect device supplied with a pre-filled phrase or PIN Do not trust that device Stop setup; use an authorized replacement and a newly generated wallet
Phrase lost, with no other valid backup Usually no Do not pay anyone promising to “extract” the keys; without the backup, the manufacturer generally cannot recreate them
Phrase known but passphrase forgotten Accounts without the passphrase may be recoverable; passphrase-derived accounts may not be Reconstruct the exact passphrase from your secure records; do not guess by moving funds into a newly derived account

A different wallet can sometimes perform an emergency recovery if it supports the same standards, networks, derivation paths, and passphrase behavior. Ledger describes using a different wallet as an option in an emergency but warns against entering the phrase into an online wallet. A browser site, exchange deposit page, desktop application, or phone app is not an acceptable substitute merely because it accepts a seed phrase.

How to migrate funds to a new wallet

  1. Set up the destination device from scratch. Generate a new recovery phrase on the trusted device. Never reuse the old phrase for the destination wallet.
  2. Record the new backup offline. Write it accurately or use a durable metal backup designed for seed storage. Keep the backup physically protected and separate from the device.
  3. Confirm destination addresses on the device. The address displayed by the wallet application must match the address shown on the hardware device’s secure screen. Malware on the computer can replace a pasted address.
  4. Restore the source wallet only on the trusted replacement. Enter the old phrase and, if applicable, the exact old passphrase through the device’s official recovery flow.
  5. Transfer assets by network. Use the correct blockchain and token contract for each asset. Keep enough native currency in the source account to pay transaction fees.
  6. Verify settlement. Check each transaction on the relevant blockchain explorer or official application after confirmation. Do not assume a submitted transaction has settled.
  7. Review token approvals separately. Moving tokens does not automatically revoke permissions granted to decentralized applications. Where relevant, review and revoke risky approvals from a trusted interface after the funds are safe.
  8. Retire the old accounts. Do not deposit new funds into accounts derived from a phrase that may have been exposed.

What cannot be recovered without the backup

Manufacturers cannot look up your private keys from a serial number, account name, PIN, or blockchain address. The blockchain can show balances and transaction history, but it cannot prove ownership or recreate a missing secret.

If the phrase is permanently lost and no valid duplicate or distributed backup exists, the assets controlled by that wallet may be inaccessible forever. If only a passphrase is missing, the same limitation applies to the separate wallet tree created by that passphrase. A phrase that restores an empty wallet is not evidence that the funds vanished; first check passphrase spelling, account type, network, and derivation path.

Protecting the next backup

Keep the phrase offline

Do not store the recovery phrase in email, cloud notes, screenshots, messaging apps, a website form, or an ordinary online wallet. Ledger advises keeping it offline and never sharing it. Anyone who asks for the words is asking for control of the wallet.

Use durable physical storage

A metal backup can resist fire, water, and paper degradation better than ordinary paper. It cannot protect a phrase that has already been copied or photographed, so physical durability and secrecy solve different problems.

Consider geographic separation

Trezor guidance describes distributing Shamir backup shares so that one compromised or damaged location does not both expose the wallet and prevent recovery. Distribution must be planned carefully: losing too many required shares blocks recovery, while placing shares together defeats the separation.

Test recovery before funding heavily

On a trusted replacement or spare compatible device, verify that your documented backup restores the expected accounts and addresses before committing a large balance. Perform this test without exposing the phrase to a networked device, camera, or other person.

Common mistakes and their fixes

  • Entering the phrase into a support form: stop immediately, assume exposure, and migrate to a new wallet.
  • Trusting a pre-filled phrase: reject the device and generate your own backup on a verified replacement.
  • Seeing zero balance after restoration: check passphrase, network, account type, and derivation path before concluding that recovery failed.
  • Sending funds to a copied address: compare the address on the hardware display every time; if a transaction has already gone to an attacker, blockchain transfers are generally irreversible.
  • Keeping the old wallet active after suspected exposure: transfer assets to newly generated accounts and stop using the old phrase.
  • Putting phrase and passphrase together: store them so one theft does not reveal both, while maintaining enough redundancy to recover them when needed.

The practical answer

A stolen hardware wallet is usually recoverable when the recovery phrase and any passphrase remain secret. A tampered device must be treated more seriously: do not enter an existing backup into it, and assume exposure if you did. Restore only through a trusted, compatible environment, verify addresses on the hardware display, and move funds to a newly generated wallet whenever the old backup may have been seen. If the phrase is gone or a required passphrase cannot be reproduced, the corresponding keys—and potentially the funds—may be unrecoverable.
