Sometimes—but only if an earlier copy still exists. Check the platform cloud history, local save folders, a game’s own backup slot, operating-system backups, or a separate USB/computer copy. If the save was deleted or overwritten in every location, support guidance treats it as unrecoverable. Stop launching the game first: new progress or automatic synchronization can replace the last surviving copy.
What determines whether recovery is possible
Recovery is a search for an older state, not a way to recreate a file that no longer exists. You have a realistic path when at least one of these remains:
- An older cloud version that was not replaced by the deletion or corruption.
- A local save directory on the current computer or an older computer.
- A backup slot or recovery file created by the game.
- An operating-system backup, USB copy, external drive, or complete game backup that includes the save.
Cloud synchronization is not automatically a versioned archive. If a deletion or corrupted file is uploaded, the cloud may hold only that bad state. Capcom’s guidance for Monster Hunter: World says its data is kept on Xbox Live Cloud and the local hard drive, but a save that was manually overwritten or deleted—or corrupted and then uploaded—cannot be recovered.

- Stop launching and playing. Insomniac Games’ 2025 support article states: “If you noticed your save file is missing after booting up the game, do NOT continue playing.” A new save, autosave, or synchronization event can overwrite the only usable copy.
- Make a safety copy of what is currently present. Copy the entire local save directory, including hidden files if your operating system supports them, to separate storage. Do not rename, move, or edit the original until you have a duplicate.
- Record dates before choosing a cloud version. Open the platform’s cloud-save page or its conflict dialog and compare the local and cloud timestamps with your last play session. Steam says conflicts occur when local and cloud files differ and advises choosing according to those dates.
- Inspect the game’s Load or Continue menu. Look for a backup slot, recovery file, or differently dated character. If one appears, load it and immediately create a new manual save in a separate slot, following the game’s own support instructions.
- Check other devices and backups. An older computer may still contain unsynchronized progress. Also check operating-system backup tools, USB media, external drives, and any full-game backup made before the deletion.
Recovering a save through Steam
Check the cloud conflict instead of guessing
When Steam detects different local and cloud files, its conflict dialog shows the alternatives and their dates. Select the copy that predates the deletion and matches your last successful session. Do not pick a file merely because it is labeled “cloud”; it may already contain the deletion or a corrupted upload. Steam’s Cloud FAQ warns that lost saves are unlikely to be recoverable and that Steam Support cannot restore them or resolve a cloud conflict for you.

Inspect the cached userdata folders
Steam keeps local cloud data in these documented locations:

Inside userdata, folders are organized by Steam account and game identifiers. Copy the relevant folders to separate storage before testing anything. If an older computer still has the save, preserve its files and then start Steam on that computer so the progress can synchronize, watching for a conflict prompt rather than accepting an automatic replacement blindly.
Understand what Steam Backup restores
Steam’s Backup feature creates restorable game backups, but save inclusion depends on how the developer stores data. Valve notes that third-party save locations may not be included and can require manual copying back after the game is restored. Test backup media after creating a backup; a backup that cannot be read is not a recovery plan. A game reinstall by itself does not restore a deleted save when the save lives outside the installation files.

PlayStation and Xbox recovery
What deletion means on older console guidance
Activision’s support guidance says deletion of saved-game data on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is permanent and cannot be undone from the console. Recovery therefore requires a prior online backup or USB backup. Restoring that backup may roll the entire game state back to the backup date, so later characters or settings can disappear.
Use the current platform instructions
Cloud menus, retention periods, and USB-restore steps differ by console generation and account configuration. Use the game’s current support page and the current PlayStation or Xbox support instructions for the exact navigation on your model. Before restoring, verify the backup date and copy any newer files that you want to preserve. If no earlier online or USB copy exists, repeatedly deleting and reinstalling the game will not recreate the save.

Some games maintain a second save independently of the platform. These procedures are examples, not universal commands.

Insomniac’s backup-slot method
Insomniac instructs players to start a new game, quit during the first cutscene, and then check the Load Game menu for a backup save. If a backup appears, load it and create a manual save immediately. Do not assume that starting a new game is safe in another title; some games replace their backup slot as soon as a new session begins.

A Dead Cells announcement describes a separate backup folder and restoring an archive while Steam Cloud is temporarily disabled. Follow that game’s published instructions exactly, keep an untouched copy of the archive, and re-enable synchronization only after confirming that the restored run loads correctly. The existence of this folder in one game does not mean other permadeath games use the same location or file format.
When the save is effectively unrecoverable
Stop recovery attempts when every possible copy has the same deletion, overwrite, or corruption. A cloud copy that synchronized after the loss is not an older version. Secure deletion or repeated overwriting also removes the data that ordinary restore tools would need. Neither a reinstall nor a new character can reconstruct the old world state, inventory, or progression.

Support documentation is especially clear about this boundary: Steam says Support cannot recover lost saves, and Capcom says a manually deleted, overwritten, or cloud-uploaded corrupted Monster Hunter: World save cannot be recovered. Treat a file as gone when the local folder, cloud state, game backup, older device, and external backups have all been checked and none contains a pre-loss copy.
Will restoring the file break permadeath?
There are two separate questions:
- Technical validity: Will the game load the restored file and continue?
- Rule validity: Does restoring a pre-death or pre-deletion state comply with the game’s intended challenge, achievements, or community rules?
A technically valid file can still invalidate a permadeath run. Some games flag achievements based on the save state; others do not. Community challenge rules may prohibit any rollback even when the platform backup is legitimate. The cited support pages explain recovery mechanics, not a universal policy for permadeath. Check the specific game’s terms, achievement behavior, and any rules for the challenge you are attempting before replacing the current file. If the run is being submitted to a leaderboard or community event, disclose the restore when its rules require it.

Common symptoms and the safest response
The game shows a cloud-conflict window
Do not choose randomly. Write down both timestamps, identify which one is before the loss, and keep a copy of the local files. Choose the older valid state only after confirming it corresponds to the correct account and game.

The cloud contains only the deleted character
Stop synchronization and search the local userdata folder, an older computer, and external backups. If every copy has the same deletion, the cloud is not a historical archive and cannot provide an earlier state.
The game loads but the run is missing
Check every slot in the game’s Load menu, including backup or recovery entries. Some titles expose a backup only after a prescribed sequence, such as entering and quitting a new game during its opening cutscene. Use that sequence only when the game’s own support instructions specify it.
A restored file crashes or reports corruption
Return to the untouched copy, do not save over it, and verify that the file belongs to the same game edition, account, and platform. A corrupted file that was already uploaded may have no usable counterpart; Capcom identifies that situation as unrecoverable for Monster Hunter: World.

That behavior is title-specific. The restored state may be playable while the achievement remains unavailable, or the game may accept it normally. Check the game’s achievement documentation and challenge rules before assuming the run still qualifies.
Preventing the next permanent loss
Keep at least one separate copy of the save folder or a tested game backup before risky updates, migrations, mods, or experiments. Steam describes creating backup files and moving them to another location; an external USB hard drive or SSD is a straightforward destination. Use a dated folder name so you can distinguish pre-change and post-change states.
- Make the copy while the game is closed, so files are not changing during the copy.
- Keep the external copy disconnected after verification; this protects it from an accidental sync or deletion.
- Before switching computers, confirm the old machine has finished saving and that the new machine has the expected timestamp.
- After restoring any backup, create a new manual save in a separate slot before resuming normal play.
- Do not claim that a drive can recover a file after every copy has been securely deleted or overwritten; recovery always depends on surviving data.
The practical rule is simple: preserve an earlier copy before experimenting, and stop all play as soon as a permadeath save appears missing. That gives cloud history, local caches, game-specific backups, and external copies a chance to contain the run you need.
