On Zello, Standby usually means the person is not currently reachable for live messages. It is an automatically displayed state, not one a user selects directly. Someone may appear in Standby after losing internet access, turning off their phone, closing or leaving Zello unavailable, or choosing Offline. Message behavior depends on whether you use Zello Friends & Family or Zello Work—and whether the message is direct or sent to a channel.
What does Standby mean on Zello?
Standby indicates that Zello cannot currently reach the user for real-time communication. It may happen when the device loses internet access, is switched off, or Zello is no longer running. A user who deliberately selects Offline can also appear to other people as being in Standby.
Zello Support states that “Standby status cannot be selected by the user” in its Friends & Family Standby Status guidance, published April 10, 2026. The distinction matters: Offline is a status the user chooses; Standby is what other people may see.
How Standby differs between Friends & Family and Zello Work
Zello has separate Friends & Family and Work products. Both use Standby as an automatic state, but status controls and message handling are not identical.

Can you message someone who is in Standby?
Yes. A direct message can be sent while the recipient is in Standby. What happens when they come back depends on the product: Friends & Family direct messages play in received order when the user returns to Available, while Zello Work direct messages are queued in History and then play in order. Work documentation also describes possible push notifications if the device has internet access and notifications are enabled.
For Zello Work, Zello’s status guidance says messages may be sent to an Offline user who appears in Standby for up to seven days. Treat that duration as Work guidance, not a universal rule for Friends & Family or every Work configuration. See Zello Support’s Work status guidance, published July 11, 2026.

Will Zello play missed channel messages after reconnection?
No. In both Friends & Family and Zello Work, channel messages missed while the user is in Standby are not queued for later playback. An all-member alert is different: the sender can choose to alert all channel members, and that alert may reach a Standby user. It does not make the missed channel audio recoverable.
Why might Standby take time to appear?
In Zello Work, the keep-alive interval determines how often the app polls its Wi-Fi or cellular connection. A longer interval reduces bandwidth use and may improve battery life, but it can also delay detection of a lost connection. As a result, someone may continue to appear Available for a time after losing connectivity. How to get out of Standby
- Restore internet access. Check that the device has a working Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
- Make sure Zello is running. Reopen the app or sign back in if needed.
- Check the resulting status. Once reachable, the user’s status should return to Available or Busy, depending on the status they use.
- For Zello Work, ask an administrator if the status remains stuck. The administrator may need to review connection or status settings, including Android asynchronous delivery where applicable.
