Sometimes—but “glass” by itself is not a safety rating. Use a container in the microwave, oven, or freezer only when the exact container is marked for that appliance and its care instructions allow it. Anchor Hocking’s specified food-storage dishes, for example, are intended for microwave use without a browning element, preheated conventional or convection ovens up to 425°F, and refrigerator or freezer storage. Its pantry jars have different restrictions and are not approved for those uses. Read the markings on your container and lid before every first use.
Why the exact container matters
Food-storage containers sold as “glass” are not one standardized product. They can differ in glass formulation, shape, wall thickness, manufacturing process, lid material, and intended use. A dish designed for baking may tolerate a preheated oven, while a decorative storage jar may be intended only for dry ingredients on a shelf.
Anchor Hocking’s care guidance tells users to check the markings on the bottom of each glass item for microwave and oven suitability. Its food-storage dishes and its pantry jars are separate product categories with separate rules: the cited food-storage dishes have appliance permissions, while the pantry jars are specifically excluded from freezer, oven, and microwave use. See the current instructions at Anchor Hocking’s care and use page and confirm the model-specific directions supplied with your container.

| Appliance or setting | What the manufacturer permits | Key boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Microwave | Use in a microwave without a browning element | Do not heat an empty or nearly empty dish |
| Conventional oven | Use in a preheated gas or electric oven up to 425°F | No stovetop, broiler, toaster oven, grill, flame, or other direct heat |
| Convection oven | Use in a preheated convection oven up to 425°F | Leave clearance from the oven walls and door |
| Refrigerator or freezer | Use for food storage | Thaw food before moving the dish to a hot appliance |
| Plastic storage cover | Reheating only, with a vent gap | Maximum reheating time is 60 seconds; never use the cover in an oven |
These limits come from Anchor Hocking’s instructions for its specified food-storage products, not from a universal rule for every glass container. The company’s product overview describes its TrueSeal, TrueLock, and SnugFit food-storage ranges as suitable for freezer, refrigerator, oven, and microwave use, with thawing required before cooking or reheating: Food Storage Containers.

Using a glass container in the microwave
Check the appliance and dish first
The cited food-storage dishes are approved for a microwave that does not have a browning element. A browning element or combination cooking mode can expose the dish to heating conditions different from ordinary microwave operation. If your appliance has grill, broil, crisp, or browning functions, use only the mode and container combination expressly covered by both manuals.
Inspect the dish before loading it. Do not microwave glass that is chipped, cracked, or noticeably scratched. Damage can concentrate stress and make later breakage more likely.
Heat food safely
- Put food in the dish; never heat the dish empty or nearly empty.
- Avoid overheating oil, butter, or other fats. They can reach very high temperatures even when the glass itself appears moderate.
- Center the dish so it does not touch the microwave’s side walls.
- Use a properly sized microwave with a working turntable. If the turntable cannot operate, turn the dish manually at regular intervals as directed by the care instructions.
- Follow the microwave owner’s manual for power settings, standing time, and combination modes.
When removing hot glass, use dry oven mitts or potholders. The company’s safety guidance states: “Always check the bottom of glassware to ensure it is microwave and oven safe, and always use dry oven mitts or potholders when removing glass from the oven or microwave.” That guidance is published at Anchor Hocking’s bakeware safety information.

Stay within the stated temperature limit
For the specified food-storage dishes, preheat a gas or electric conventional oven—or a convection oven—to no more than 425°F. The 425°F limit belongs to those Anchor Hocking instructions; it should not be applied automatically to another brand, another product line, or a lid.

Preheating matters because placing cold glass into an oven while it is still heating can expose different parts of the dish to uneven temperature changes. Follow the product instructions rather than improvising with a cold-to-hot transfer.
Keep the dish away from direct heat
Do not place the glass on a stovetop burner, under a broiler, in a toaster oven, on a grill, over a flame, or against another direct heat source. These environments can heat a small area much faster than the rest of the dish and create severe thermal stress.
Prepare the dish and oven
- Choose an oven large enough to leave clearance between the container and the walls, ceiling, floor, and door.
- For foods that may release liquid, add enough liquid to cover the bottom of the dish before cooking.
- Do not use a damaged dish. Scratches, chips, and impact marks weaken the glass.
- When cooking is complete, remove the dish with dry mitts or potholders and set it on a dry, heat-resistant trivet or other suitable surface.
Storing glass containers in the freezer
The cited food-storage dishes may be used to store food in a refrigerator or freezer. Freezer approval concerns storage at low temperature; it does not mean the container can immediately tolerate a hot appliance.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not move a frozen dish directly into a preheated oven or microwave. Thaw the food first, following the manufacturer’s food-storage guidance. This transition is one of the most important distinctions between “freezer-safe” and “safe for freezer-to-oven” use: the former permits storage, while the latter requires an explicit product instruction.

Leave whatever expansion space the product instructions call for when filling a container with liquid or food that may expand as it freezes. If the model’s manual does not explain fill limits, do not assume a completely full container is safe; use a different model with published freezing directions.
Lids have separate rules
A container’s glass base and its lid are different components with different temperature limits. Anchor Hocking says its food-storage plastic covers may be used for reheating, but they are not for conventional ovens, stovetops, broilers, or toaster ovens.
- Leave a gap in the cover so steam can escape; a sealed lid can allow pressure to build.
- Do not reheat the cover for longer than 60 seconds.
- Remove the cover after reheating rather than leaving it on a hot dish.
- Open the cover away from your face and body to reduce the risk of a steam burn.
Never infer that an oven-safe glass base makes its plastic lid oven-safe. Check the lid’s markings and instructions separately, including when a set uses a silicone seal, snap-on frame, or vented insert.

Glass can fracture when temperature changes are sudden or severe. Anchor Hocking’s guidance says not to add liquid to hot glass, not to put a hot dish on a wet or cold surface, and not to continue using a dish that is chipped, cracked, or noticeably scratched.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Avoid hot-to-cold contact: do not set a hot dish on a wet countertop, a cold stone surface, or another surface that can rapidly draw heat from one area.
- Avoid cold-to-hot transfer: thaw frozen food before reheating or cooking it.
- Use dry protection: wet fabric conducts heat quickly, so use dry oven mitts or potholders.
- Inspect after impacts: a dish dropped or struck against a sink may have damage that is difficult to see. Replace it if you find a chip, crack, or pronounced scratch.
- Prevent localized heating: keep microwave dishes from touching the cavity walls and keep oven dishes away from direct heat.
On its safety page, Anchor Hocking says mechanical breakage from impact is its most frequent cause of failure for its bakeware. The same page reports a 40% improvement in thermal-shock resistance in company testing when it changed from borosilicate to tempered soda-lime-silicate glass over 40 years ago. That is a manufacturer-reported historical comparison, with no publication year or underlying study provided; it is not an independent rating for all glass containers. The details are at Bakeware Facts.
Pantry jars are an important exception
Do not treat every glass item from the same company as interchangeable. Anchor Hocking’s care page identifies pantry glass jars as dry-food containers and says they are not for freezer, oven, or microwave use. A jar that looks as substantial as a baking dish can still have a completely different intended purpose.
If a container has no appliance marking, no model-specific manual, or a label limited to dry storage, use it only for the labeled purpose. Replacing an unmarked container with one explicitly labeled microwave-, oven-, and freezer-safe is safer than trying to infer its limits from appearance.
How to choose a replacement container
Use this checklist when buying or replacing a food-storage dish:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Markings: confirm that the exact model identifies microwave, oven, and freezer suitability rather than relying on a generic product description.
- Temperature ceiling: note the maximum oven temperature and whether it applies to conventional ovens, convection ovens, or both.
- Mode exclusions: look for warnings about broilers, toaster ovens, grills, stovetops, flames, or browning elements.
- Transition instructions: verify whether freezer-to-oven or freezer-to-microwave transfers are allowed; if the instructions say to thaw, follow that direction.
- Lid limits: check whether the lid is microwave-safe, how it must be vented, its maximum reheating time, and whether it must be removed for oven use.
- Condition and shape: choose a size that fits the appliance with clearance and replace any damaged piece.
Manufacturers may revise product lines or instructions, so retain the model number and consult the current manual rather than relying on a listing copied from an older generation.
A safe-use routine
Before putting any glass food-storage container into an appliance, run through this sequence:
- Read the bottom marking and the model’s care instructions.
- Identify which component is entering the appliance: glass base, plastic lid, silicone seal, or another part.
- Inspect every piece for chips, cracks, deep scratches, or impact damage.
- Check the starting temperature. If the dish is frozen and the instructions require thawing, thaw it before heating.
- Set the correct appliance mode and temperature. Avoid direct heat and excluded modes.
- Allow clearance from microwave walls or oven surfaces.
- Use dry mitts or potholders when handling the hot dish.
- Set it on a dry, heat-resistant surface and allow it to cool without adding cold liquid.
What to do if something seems wrong
The dish develops a crack or chip
Stop using it for heating, cooking, or freezing. Do not attempt to repair a structural crack with adhesive. Replace the dish, because repeated temperature changes can enlarge the damage.
The lid warps or becomes unusually hot
Stop reheating with that lid and check its instructions. Confirm that a vent gap was present and that the 60-second maximum was not exceeded. Reheat with the lid removed only if the food and appliance instructions permit it.
The container was frozen and needs immediate heating
Do not place it directly into a preheated oven or microwave when the product instructions require thawing. Transfer the food to a container approved for the intended process, or thaw the original dish first.
The bottom marking is unreadable
Treat the appliance suitability as unverified. Use the container only for room-temperature or refrigerated storage until you can identify the model and obtain its current care instructions.
Bottom line
Glass food-storage containers can be microwave-, oven-, and freezer-safe, but only when the exact product is marked and instructed for those uses. For the Anchor Hocking food-storage dishes covered by the cited guidance, microwave use excludes browning elements, oven use is limited to preheated conventional or convection ovens up to 425°F, freezer storage requires thawing before heating, and plastic covers have stricter reheating rules. Check the container and lid separately, avoid sudden temperature changes and direct heat, and replace damaged glass.
