Yes—if “solo” means playing without a human party. You can level, follow much of the story, explore, gather, craft, collect, run supported Normal dungeons with computer-controlled companions, complete Delves alone, and use Story Mode for some raid narrative. You cannot treat every dungeon, raid difficulty, or endgame activity as a one-player mode, and World of Warcraft remains an online, shared world rather than an offline game.
The practical answer depends on your expansion access, the instance’s supported difficulty, and whether you want story, repeatable progression, or competitive group content. This guide separates those cases so you can start without guessing.
What “solo WoW” actually means
Solo play in World of Warcraft means your character is not relying on other human players for a particular activity. The game still connects you to shared servers, economies, public zones, and chat channels. Other players may appear in the world even when you complete an activity alone.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That distinction matters because “solo” does not unlock every piece of content. Blizzard’s official solo overview describes a large set of activities that can be done alone, but its dungeon list and level bands were published in September 2024, before the Midnight expansion. Treat those examples as the support described in that guide, not as a guaranteed October 2026 catalog. For a current instance list, check the live game or current support material before planning around a specific dungeon or raid.

A useful way to think about the game is in three layers:
- Reliable solo foundation: questing, campaign chapters, exploration, gathering, crafting, collecting, pet battles, and much open-world play.
- Solo with designed assistance: Follower Dungeons, Delves with Brann Bronzebeard, and selected Story Mode raid encounters.
- Usually group-oriented: content whose current difficulty or feature does not provide NPC replacements. The fact that one mode supports solo play does not make its Heroic, Mythic, or other versions solo-capable.
How to start as a new or returning player
Use the introductory experience first
New players begin with an introductory solo experience and can continue through campaign and side-story quests. Blizzard’s earlier route recommends Exile’s Reach for levels 1–10, Dragonflight for levels 10–70, and The War Within for levels 70–80. Those bands describe that 2024 guide, not a promise that the same route is the only current one. A February 2026 starter-guide result describes a current beginner story through level 70, so returning players should follow the campaign offered by the live client rather than forcing an older zone order.
The safest opening sequence is:
- Complete the introductory tutorial and the available starting campaign.
- Follow the campaign objectives before branching into optional zones. This keeps your next destination and unlocks clear while you learn movement, combat, equipment, and professions.
- Accept side quests when you want additional story or practice; they are not a requirement for joining the supported solo instances later.
- When a dungeon or Delve becomes available in your current expansion, use that activity’s solo-capable mode instead of assuming the standard group queue will supply NPCs.
Choose a low-pressure class setup
Your class and role affect how comfortable solo combat feels, but the sources do not establish a single best class. Pick a class whose basic attacks and defensive tools you can understand, then learn its role before entering a Follower Dungeon. NPC teammates can fill the other roles in supported Normal dungeons, but your own role selection still determines what you are expected to do.
Which activities can you complete alone?
Questing and open-world stories
Questing is the most dependable solo route. Campaign chapters, side stories, exploration, gathering professions such as herbalism, mining, and fishing, crafting, pet battles, and collecting across multiple characters all give you substantial things to do without forming a player party. Public zones and the Auction House remain connected to other players, so “solo” changes who accompanies you, not the online nature of the world.
Follower Dungeons: Normal dungeons with NPC teammates
Follower Dungeons are Blizzard’s on-ramp for learning dungeon quests without finding four people. In a supported instance, you select your role and four NPC teammates fill the remaining places in the five-player party. Dungeon Assistance can let an NPC lead, giving you time to observe routes and mechanics or explore at your own pace.

The cited solo guide lists eight Dragonflight dungeons for levels 10–70 and eight The War Within dungeons from levels 71–80. Those are the instances named in that guide, not an all-expansion or October 2026 list. Follower support is tied to Normal difficulty and listed instances; it does not mean every dungeon, difficulty, or older expansion automatically has an NPC option.
For a first run, use this decision sequence:
- Confirm that the dungeon appears in the game’s Follower Dungeon or equivalent NPC-supported option.
- Select the role you understand best and read the objective before pulling enemies.
- Leave Dungeon Assistance enabled if you want an NPC to demonstrate the route; disable or ignore that help when you prefer to lead.
- Treat the run as practice for mechanics and quest completion, not proof that the same encounter will be soloable on another difficulty.
Delves: repeatable short adventures
Delves are The War Within adventures built for repeatable runs with Brann Bronzebeard as an NPC companion. Blizzard describes them as “short 10–15-minute adventures completely solo,” a typical-duration description from its 2024 guide rather than an independently measured performance guarantee. They combine combat, puzzles, platforming, bosses, and rewards.

Blizzard’s Delves overview says you can play alone or with up to four additional friends. That makes Delves useful both when you want an entirely NPC-supported run and when a small group happens to be available. The sources present Delves as meaningful progression and endgame rewards, but they do not establish that Delves replace every group progression path or provide the same rewards as every raid and dungeon difficulty.
Story Mode raids
Story Mode is designed to let you experience raid narrative without assembling a human raid group. Blizzard’s example uses nine NPC companions to help with a final encounter. The same guide said Story Mode would continue in future raids within The War Within and the Worldsoul Saga.
Do not rely on a static article to decide whether a particular current raid has Story Mode. The guide’s statement is a feature description, not a verified October 2026 instance list. Check the live game or current support documentation for the raid you want before planning a solo story run.

Activities that are social by design
Some systems remain shared even when you play independently. Gathering nodes, open-world events, trading, guilds, chat, and the Auction House involve a connected player population. You can decline participation, but you cannot turn the modern game into a permanently offline client through a solo setting.

Solo route comparison
Use the table below to match an activity to the kind of solo experience you want.
| Activity | Best for | Assistance | Availability and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campaign and side quests | Story, leveling, exploration | Your character only | Broadly solo-friendly; the current campaign and level route can change by expansion. |
| Follower Dungeons | Learning dungeon quests and mechanics | Four NPC teammates; optional Dungeon Assistance | Normal difficulty in supported instances; the 2024 guide names eight Dragonflight and eight The War Within dungeons. |
| Delves | Short, replayable progression runs | Brann Bronzebeard NPC companion | Playable alone or with up to four friends; not a replacement for every group progression path. |
| Story Mode raids | Seeing selected raid narrative | NPC companions; Blizzard’s example uses nine | Only raids that currently offer Story Mode; verify the live list before choosing an instance. |
| Gathering, crafting, collecting, pet battles | Self-directed goals between campaigns | Usually none | Activities occur in an online economy and world, so they are not offline modes. |
How to reduce unwanted social prompts
You can make the interface quieter without pretending the game is offline. Blizzard’s solo guide recommends leaving channels with the /Leave command and changing Social options to block trades, guild invitations, calendar invitations, and chat-channel invitations.
- Type
/Leavefollowed by the channel you no longer want to monitor. - Open the game’s Social options.
- Set trade requests, guild invites, calendar invites, and chat-channel invites to block or decline, using the labels shown by your current client.
- Keep in mind that these settings reduce unsolicited prompts; they do not remove other players from public zones or prevent all shared-world encounters.
If you later want a guild, group quest, or trade, reverse the relevant setting rather than assuming a blocked prompt means the feature is unavailable.

Access has two separate questions: what a subscription or game-time purchase unlocks, and whether the newest expansion must be purchased. Blizzard Support’s current modes page says a subscription covers modern World of Warcraft except the newest expansion. It also states that The War Within has been included with the subscription since January 20, 2026, while Midnight content requires purchasing Midnight. Blizzard’s February 2026 starter-guide result says subscription or game time unlocks content beyond level 20 through level 80.

| Access status | What the cited guidance establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Modern free trial | Limited access; the starter-guide result identifies level 20 as the boundary before subscription or game time is needed for higher content. | Current regional trial limits and class or feature restrictions. |
| Subscription or game time | Modern WoW access except the newest expansion; The War Within is included according to the January 20, 2026 Support page. | Current account status, region, and any changes to entitlement rules. |
| Midnight content | Requires purchasing Midnight, according to the current Support page. | Edition, region, pricing, and which features are included with the purchase. |
Because access rules and expansion entitlements can change, check Blizzard Support’s current modes and versions page immediately before subscribing or buying an expansion. The February 2026 new-player guide is also useful for the current beginner-story framing, although its page availability can vary.
Common solo-player pitfalls and fixes
“The dungeon finder gave me a normal group instead of NPCs.”
You may have selected the ordinary queue or an instance that is not in the supported Follower list. Look specifically for the NPC-supported Follower option and confirm the dungeon is one of the currently listed instances. Follower support is not a universal property of every dungeon.
“I assumed Story Mode covers the raid I want.”
Story Mode availability is raid-specific and can change. Check the live game or current support information rather than relying on the example of nine NPC companions from Blizzard’s guide.
“I reached a feature that still expects other players.”
That is normal. Solo support is selective: a game can offer solo questing, Delves, and certain dungeon or raid modes while retaining group-only difficulties and activities. Switch to an open-world objective, a supported Delve, or another listed solo route instead of treating the limitation as an account error.

“I want no interaction at all.”
Use the Social settings and /Leave guidance to reduce invitations and chat, but remember that the world, economy, and public zones remain online. No setting described by Blizzard converts modern WoW into an offline game.
A practical forever-solo plan
- Start with the introductory experience and current campaign offered by your client.
- Use open-world quests and exploration as your baseline progression.
- When you want instanced content without a human party, choose a listed Follower Dungeon on Normal difficulty.
- Use Delves for short, repeatable adventures with Brann; invite friends only when you want to.
- Check whether the raid you care about currently offers Story Mode before planning a narrative run.
- Review subscription and expansion entitlements before purchasing, especially if you are deciding between trial access, a subscription, The War Within, and Midnight.
- Adjust Social options only as far as your preferred level of contact; blocking prompts is reversible.
Following that plan lets a beginner experience a substantial portion of World of Warcraft independently while keeping expectations accurate: solo is a supported way to play much of the game, not a guarantee that every mode has an NPC substitute.
