A Steam Community player reported that the free Hela demo ran on Steam Deck without compatibility problems, stayed locked at 35 frames per second, and had only a few brief drops when entering new areas. Treat that as one hands-on result rather than a guaranteed benchmark for every Deck, SteamOS release, Proton build, or future demo update.
What the available evidence shows
The Hela demo is playable on Steam Deck according to a player report from October 2026. The player said the demo ran without issues, held a 35 fps lock throughout play, and produced only a few one-time drops while loading into new areas. The same report described the image quality as decent for a Steam Deck, and the developer acknowledged the report.
That is useful practical evidence, but it is not the same as an official compatibility certification or a repeatable laboratory test. The report does not identify the Deck model, SteamOS version, Proton build, display resolution, refresh rate, power limit, or individual graphics settings. It therefore cannot establish that every LCD or OLED Deck will deliver an identical result.

What the Hela demo is on Steam
SteamDB identifies the demo as free software distributed through Steam. Its package contains a Windows 64-bit executable named Hela.exe, with full controller support and touchscreen configuration listed in the metadata.

Because the executable is built for Windows rather than Linux, SteamOS uses Valve’s Proton compatibility layer through Steam Play. Proton translates the Windows game’s graphics, input, audio, and system interfaces so they can run on the Deck’s Linux-based operating system. The exact result depends on the game build, Proton version, middleware, drivers, and the Deck’s current software environment.
SteamDB metadata also detects Unreal Engine components associated with AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS. Detection only means those components are present in the Windows build; it does not prove that the demo exposes FSR or DLSS controls in its menus, that either option works on Deck, or that enabling one would improve performance. The Deck’s hardware and the game’s own menu determine which upscaling choices are actually available.
Install and launch the demo on Steam Deck
Use the normal Steam workflow first. Changing compatibility settings before the first launch makes it harder to identify what caused a problem.

- Install it normally. Choose the Deck’s internal storage or an already configured game-storage location, then wait for Steam to finish downloading and validating the files.
- Start in Gaming Mode. Launch the demo from its Library entry with the default compatibility configuration. Do not force a Proton tool on the first attempt.
- Check basic input before changing graphics. Confirm that the built-in controls respond in the title screen and that the game recognises the Deck’s controller layout. The Steam metadata lists full controller support, but menu behavior can still vary by build.
- Play long enough to enter more than one area. The only reported stutters occurred when entering new areas. A short title-screen test cannot reveal that type of traversal hitch.
Keep the first run at the game’s own default graphics settings. The available hands-on report does not record a tested resolution, preset, frame-rate cap, TDP value, refresh rate, or upscaling mode, so there is no evidence-based preset to apply before you observe how your system behaves.

When and how to force a Proton tool
If the demo refuses to start, renders incorrectly, loses input, or behaves worse after an update, Steam provides a per-game compatibility override. Valve documents the following path:
- Open the Hela demo’s entry in your Steam Library.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose an installed Proton tool from the selector, close the properties window, and launch the demo.
No particular Proton release has been proven necessary for Hela. Start with the default configuration, then test one available tool at a time only when there is a concrete reason. After each change, launch the demo again and repeat the same short route. This isolates whether the override improved startup, graphics, input, or traversal behavior instead of mixing several variables together.
If an override makes the result worse, return to Properties > Compatibility, disable the force option, and retest with Steam’s default selection. A forced tool is not inherently newer or better; it is simply a different compatibility environment.
Performance expectations on Deck
The reported 35 fps result
The strongest concrete performance observation is a 35 fps lock reported by one Steam Community player. That player said the rate stayed locked during play, with only a few one-time drops on entering new areas. The report also judged the visual quality acceptable for a Steam Deck.

Use 35 fps as a reference point for your own test, not as a promise. A lock can hide short frame-time spikes, and a result from one Deck may not transfer to another system with a different display, storage location, SteamOS image, background workload, or Proton build. The report does not provide a frame-time graph, average rate, 1% low, scene list, or reproducible test route.
Why area-entry drops may happen
A brief hitch when entering a new area can occur while a game streams assets, compiles shaders, or performs other one-time work. The player report describes the drops as occasional and tied to entering areas, but it does not identify the technical cause. Do not assume that changing a single graphics slider will eliminate them.
When evaluating your own Deck, distinguish a one-time traversal hitch from sustained slowdown. Walk through the same transition twice. If the drop appears only on the first entry and the frame rate then settles, it is different from a repeatable performance limit that continues throughout the area.
A sensible settings process
There is no documented Hela-specific settings preset in the available evidence. Use a controlled process rather than copying unsupported values.

- Record the baseline. Note whether the game launches, whether controller input works, the display resolution shown by the game, and the frame-rate behavior at default settings.
- Change one setting. If the game exposes resolution, quality, shadows, effects, or an upscaler, adjust only one item before retesting. This makes the result attributable to that change.
- Use the same route. Revisit the same area and transition so you can compare sustained performance and the one-time entry behavior separately.
- Keep image quality in view. A higher frame counter is not automatically better if text, edges, or distant objects become difficult to read. Compare the scene you actually play, not only the menu value.
- Stop when the result is stable. Once startup, controls, and the scenes you care about are reliable, avoid changing several additional variables without a specific problem to solve.
FSR or DLSS controls should be treated as optional until you confirm that the demo exposes them and that they function correctly on your Deck. The presence of related Unreal Engine and SDK components in Steam metadata is not proof that a menu toggle exists.

The demo does not launch
- Close and relaunch Steam, then try the default compatibility configuration again.
- Open Properties > Compatibility and test one specific Steam Play tool, as described above.
- After each tool change, retest from a clean launch rather than changing graphics settings simultaneously.
- If a forced tool fails, disable the override and return to the default selection.
The cited evidence does not identify a required Proton release, so a failed launch should not be interpreted as proof that one particular version is universally correct.
The game launches but graphics are wrong
- Return to the default graphics settings and confirm whether the problem is present before any manual changes.
- Test a different compatibility tool through the documented menu path, changing only that variable.
- Check whether the problem occurs in every area or only during an initial transition.
- Do not assume that a detected FSR or DLSS component is a supported in-game option; verify the actual menu and the resulting image.
Controller or touchscreen input is unreliable
- Confirm that the game is launched from Gaming Mode and that the Deck’s built-in controller is active.
- Restart the demo after changing the compatibility tool so input libraries reload cleanly.
- Check the game’s own control screen before creating a custom layout.
- If the issue appears only after forcing a tool, undo that override and retest the default configuration.
Steam metadata lists full controller support and touchscreen configuration, but that listing does not guarantee identical behavior in every menu or after every update.

No independent benchmark or official performance table is available in the cited material, so a reproducible report should include those details rather than presenting one user’s frame rate as a universal limit.

Is the demo Steam Deck Verified?
The available sources do not establish a current Steam Deck Verified or Playable badge for the Hela demo. Valve’s Deck compatibility program distinguishes ratings and requires Proton and middleware support when a Windows game runs through Proton, but a successful community report is not the same as a Valve rating.
For that reason, treat the store’s current badge, if one appears later, as a separate status from the October 2026 player result. A badge can change as the demo, SteamOS, or compatibility tests change; the report records what one player achieved at a particular point in time.
What to record when testing your own Deck
A few details make your result useful and help separate a game issue from a configuration issue:

This information is more informative than saying only that the demo is “slow” or “broken,” especially because the sole concrete report describes a stable 35 fps lock with brief area-entry drops.
Should you install it on internal storage or a card?
The cited evidence does not compare storage locations, and the demo has no documented storage requirement beyond the space Steam reports during installation. Install it wherever you normally keep Steam games, then keep that location unchanged while testing. Moving the demo while diagnosing a hitch introduces another variable and makes comparisons less reliable.
Steam Deck versus another handheld
No measurements for another handheld are established here, so there is no evidence-based cross-device winner. If you compare devices yourself, use the same demo build and the same route. Record sustained frame rate, one-time traversal stutter, image quality at each device’s native resolution, controller behavior, battery draw, and whether a compatibility-tool override is needed. Report those values separately instead of inferring them from the Steam Deck result.
Bottom line for prospective players
The Hela demo is worth trying on Steam Deck if you are comfortable with a community-tested result rather than an official compatibility guarantee.
