Probably, but it is not confirmed. Steam Deck can run Windows PC games through Proton, and a Steam Community guide documents a Linux installation path and mod-manager workflow for Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered. However, the available announcement for the single-player survival mod does not document its exact files, loader, Proton requirements, controls, or Steam Deck testing. Treat Deck support as a plausible experiment rather than a verified compatibility claim.
What the Ghostbusters survival mod adds
The mod announcement describes a single-player survival mod for Ghostbusters: The Video Game. Its design appears to adapt the series’ existing Survival structure for one player instead of a conventional multiplayer match.
How Survival is described in the original game
The original Ghostbusters PC manual defines Survival as: “Waves of stronger ghosts attack the players until they are all knocked out at once.” That wording establishes the basic loop: repeated enemy waves, increasing difficulty, and a loss condition when every player is down.

What the single-player adaptation means
The announcement indicates that the mod is intended to make that wave-based mode playable alone. It does not establish whether the mod changes enemy health, spawn rates, AI, revive rules, equipment progression, mission maps, scoring, or the number of waves. Those details matter on a handheld because a mode balanced for several players may become unusually difficult or demanding when one character must handle every threat.

Why Steam Deck support is still uncertain
Steam Deck uses SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system. Windows games generally run through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer, which translates Windows APIs and provides a Windows-like runtime. Proton can make an otherwise Windows-only game launch, but it does not automatically make every third-party mod work.
The survival mod’s announcement is community-level evidence, not an official compatibility matrix. No authoritative source located for this title confirms all of the following:
- Which base-game edition the mod targets: the original PC release, the Remastered Steam release, or both.
- Whether it replaces game archives, adds a loader, or depends on a separate Windows executable.
- Whether a mod manager is required.
- Which Proton version, launch option, or Wine prefix it expects.
- Whether its menus, controller bindings, frame pacing, and suspend/resume behavior have been tested on Steam Deck.
That is why “likely to run” is accurate, while “confirmed working on Steam Deck” is not.

Identify the exact game edition before installing anything
Do not assume a mod made for one Ghostbusters PC build will work with another. Check the mod announcement or download readme for the executable name, supported game version, and folder it expects.

If the author names only one executable or one edition, use that edition. Installing files from an original-release guide into Remastered, or the reverse, can prevent the game from launching and makes troubleshooting much harder.
Prepare a reversible Steam Deck installation
Use Desktop Mode for file work. Before changing the game, make a clean baseline that you can restore.
- Install and launch the unmodified base game once in Gaming Mode. This lets Steam create its prefix and first-run files.
- Close the game and Steam before copying mod files.
- Back up the game’s save data and record the original installation folder contents. A mod that changes archives may not be removable by deleting one visible file.
- Read the mod author’s installation notes completely. Look for a required manager, a specific game patch, a DLL or executable loader, and any Windows-only setup utility.
- Keep the download archive unchanged so you can compare its files with the destination and reinstall cleanly if needed.

The path can differ if your Steam library is on a microSD card or another storage location. Use Steam’s own folder browser rather than assuming the default location:
- Switch to Desktop Mode.
- Open Steam, right-click the game in your Library, choose Manage, then Browse local files.
- Keep that directory open while you inspect the mod archive.
- Copy only the files and folders the mod author specifies, preserving their relative paths.
- If the instructions call for a mod manager, install and run that manager according to its documentation instead of manually guessing which files belong in the game folder.
The Linux guide’s manager workflow concerns a texture mod; it demonstrates a possible Remastered directory and Linux process, not proof that the survival mod uses the same loader or folder structure.
Use Proton only as a compatibility layer, not as a mod guarantee
If Steam does not start the Windows build correctly, force a Proton version from the game’s compatibility settings. General Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance from Bethesda recommends trying the latest Proton release and lowering graphics settings when necessary.

- In Gaming Mode, select the game in your Library.
- Open the game page’s Settings menu.
- Choose Properties, then Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Start with the latest Proton version available in your Steam client. If the game fails after an update, test another installed Proton release and note which one you used.
- Launch the unmodified game once before adding the mod, then close it and apply the mod’s documented installation.
Do not add random launch options copied from unrelated games. A launch option is useful only when the mod author or a reliable troubleshooting guide identifies it for this title.

When a separate Windows launcher or prefix is involved
Some mods are simple file replacements; others depend on a Windows-only manager or executable. If the survival mod requires the latter, Proton may need a separate Wine prefix and manual configuration. That is a possibility, not a confirmed requirement for this project.
Signs that you are dealing with this more complex setup include an installer that refuses to run in Desktop Mode, a manager that cannot see the Steam installation, or instructions that refer to a standalone launcher rather than copying files into the game directory. In that situation:
- Do not run the installer against your only clean copy.
- Record which Proton tool launches the installer and where it creates its prefix.
- Confirm that the launcher points to the same game executable Steam uses.
- Test the original game after removing or disabling the manager.
- Restore the clean backup if the game begins crashing before the main menu.
Without author documentation for the survival mod, there is no reliable universal prefix recipe to publish.

- Baseline launch: Run the unmodified game and reach its main menu.
- Controller check: Confirm that the Deck’s built-in controls operate menus and gameplay before starting Survival.
- Mod detection: Add the mod or enable it in its manager, then verify that the expected menu item or mode appears.
- Short session: Play the first wave for several minutes. Watch for missing textures, audio loops, input delays, crashes, or unusually uneven frame delivery.
- Longer session: If the first wave is stable, continue through later waves and test pausing, quitting to the menu, and resuming from a fresh launch.
- Recovery test: Disable the mod and confirm that the clean game still starts. This proves you have a practical rollback path.
Record the game edition, Proton version, storage location, mod-manager version if any, and the exact symptom. Those details are more useful to the mod author than a generic report that it “doesn’t work.”

Should you try it on a Steam Deck?
It is reasonable to try if you already own the compatible PC edition, can restore a clean installation, and are comfortable using Desktop Mode. The strongest evidence is indirect: Steam Deck can run Windows games through Proton, and the Remastered game has a documented Linux modding workflow.
Wait for a confirmed report if you need guaranteed controls, stable frame pacing, or a plug-and-play install. The current evidence does not establish those qualities for this survival mod, and it does not show that the mod’s files or loader work with every Ghostbusters PC edition.
