Yes. Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection on Nintendo Switch supports online versus play, but online play is limited to four of the collection’s 12 included games. You need broadband internet, a Nintendo Account and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. The steps below explain which versions work, how to create or join a lobby, and how the online, local-wireless and single-system player limits differ.
Which Street Fighter games in the Switch collection work online?
The Switch collection contains 12 Street Fighter titles in Japanese and overseas versions. Capcom identifies only four overseas versions as supporting online versus play. The overseas versions use English text. Selecting another entry in the collection will not provide the same online-versus option.
| Online-capable entry | How the name is described | Important version detail |
|---|---|---|
| Street Fighter II’: Champion Edition | The overseas version associated with Street Fighter II’ Turbo/Hyper Fighting | Choose the overseas version; Japanese and overseas editions are separate entries in the collection. |
| Super Street Fighter II Turbo | One of the collection’s dedicated online-versus games | Online support applies to the overseas version identified by Capcom. |
| Street Fighter Alpha 3 | One of the collection’s dedicated online-versus games | Online support applies to the overseas version identified by Capcom. |
| Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike | Capcom’s launch material also calls this Street Fighter III: Third Strike | Online support applies to the overseas version identified by Capcom. |
That means the remaining games in the 12-game package can be played through their available offline modes, but they are not among the four entries Capcom lists for online versus. If the online menu appears to be missing, first check that you launched one of these four overseas versions rather than a Japanese version or another collection entry.
What you need before starting
- A Nintendo Switch with the collection installed. Nintendo lists the software at 5 GB and gives 29 May 2018 as the Switch release date.
- Broadband internet. The console must be connected to broadband before the online area can be used.
- A Nintendo Account. Nintendo requires the account setup for online play.
- A paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo lists an active paid membership as a requirement for online play in this title.
- A compatible controller for every local player. This matters when people are sharing one Switch or using local multiplayer; Nintendo notes that additional controllers may be required.
Online participants should each use a Nintendo Account with the required Nintendo Switch Online access. The official specifications do not state that a free trial, a particular membership duration or a specific regional plan changes the player limits, so those details should not be assumed from the game listing.

How to play online on Nintendo Switch
- Connect the console to broadband internet. Confirm the Switch is online before launching the collection. If the console cannot reach Nintendo’s online services, the game cannot complete the online setup.
- Check the account and membership. Sign in with the user’s Nintendo Account and verify that the account has an active paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. A game purchase alone does not replace this requirement.
- Launch Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. From the collection’s game-selection screen, choose one of the four overseas versions that Capcom lists as online-capable.
- Open that game’s online play area. The online options are attached to the individual game entry, not to every title in the collection. If you selected a non-supported game, return to the collection menu and select a supported one.
- Choose matchmaking or a custom lobby. Use the matchmaking search for a ranked or casual-style search when that option is offered. For a friend or a coordinated group, use the custom-lobby controls to create or join a room.
- Set or review the room rules. In a custom lobby, the documented controls include the game, game version, region, lobby title, event or rule settings, first-to score, participant limit and which participants may start matches.
- Start the match after the room is ready. The lobby manual also documents spectator support, so people in the room can watch matches when the lobby settings and participant arrangement allow it.
The collection’s official material does not describe a separate cross-platform version, mobile companion service or web-based invitation system. The supported path is the Switch game’s own matchmaking and custom-lobby system.
How to set up a custom lobby for friends
A custom lobby is the most controllable option when you want to play with a particular person or organize several participants. The exact controls documented by Capcom let you make the room predictable instead of relying on an open search.
Pick the game and version first
Choose one of the four online-capable games, then check the game-version setting. Both players need to enter the same supported game and compatible version. This is especially important for the Street Fighter II naming, because Champion Edition is described as the overseas version associated with Turbo/Hyper Fighting, while the collection also contains Japanese and overseas variants.

Give the lobby a recognizable title
The host can set a lobby title. Use a distinctive title that your friend can identify, particularly when several rooms are open. The title is only one part of the room configuration; the game, version and region must also line up.
Set the match format
Capcom’s documented controls include event or rule settings, the first-to score and a participant limit. Set the first-to value before inviting people so everyone knows how many wins are needed. Set the participant limit to fit the group rather than leaving more places open than you intend to use.
Control who starts matches
The host can set who may start matches. This is useful for a teaching session, a tournament-style rotation or a room where the host wants to control the order of play. Spectator support allows others in the room to watch when they are not the active players.

The manual describes the controls for making and joining a room, but it does not promise a particular friend-invite button or a guaranteed lobby-discovery method outside the game. Coordinate the room title and settings through whatever communication method your group already uses, then use the collection’s Create or Join lobby flow.

How many people can play?
Nintendo publishes different limits for each multiplayer method. They are not interchangeable: the online limit is lower than the local-wireless limit, and one console has the smallest limit.
| Play method | Nintendo’s published player count | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Single system | 1–2 players | Players share one Switch. Provide one compatible controller per local player. |
| Local wireless | 2–8 players | Use the collection’s local-wireless mode and plan for the compatible hardware and controllers needed by everyone. |
| Online | 2–4 players | Use one of the four online-capable games and the required Nintendo Account, broadband connection and paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. |
Online play being listed for 2–4 players does not mean that every match is a four-person simultaneous fight. It is Nintendo’s player-count specification for the online mode; the lobby can also organize participants and spectators around the available matches.
Online versus local multiplayer
| Question | Online | Local wireless | One system |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum published player count | 2–4 | 2–8 | 1–2 |
| Internet connection | Broadband required | Not listed as an online requirement | Not listed as an online requirement |
| Nintendo Account and paid Nintendo Switch Online | Required by Nintendo | Not listed as requirements for local play | Not listed as requirements for local play |
| Supported game versions | Four overseas versions only | Use the local modes available for the selected title | Use the local modes available for the selected title |
| Controller planning | Each online player uses their own local control setup | Plan compatible hardware for every participating local player | One compatible controller per player; Nintendo lists additional controllers as potentially required |
For two people in the same room, a single system is the simplest arrangement if you are comfortable with the 1–2-player limit. For a larger group in one place, Nintendo’s 2–8 local-wireless specification provides more capacity than online play. For players in different locations, online is the appropriate mode, but the supported online games and 2–4-player ceiling still apply.
Practice before going online
Capcom’s launch announcement says a robust Training Mode is available in Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Street Fighter III: Third Strike. The announcement specifically presents Training Mode as a way to practice combos and learn a character before an online battle.

For a new player, use Training Mode before entering matchmaking to check controller layout, special-move inputs and the timing of the character you intend to use. For a group lobby, training also gives everyone a way to confirm that the selected game and version are correct before the host begins the first match.
The announcement’s naming uses Hyper Fighting and Third Strike, while Capcom’s support description identifies the corresponding online-capable entries as Street Fighter II’: Champion Edition and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. Treat the collection’s displayed game and version labels as authoritative when choosing the menu entry.

The online option is missing
- Return to the collection’s title-selection screen.
- Open one of the four overseas versions Capcom identifies for online play.
- Do not assume that every one of the 12 included games has online versus simply because the collection itself advertises online play.
- Check that you did not open a Japanese version when the supported entry is the overseas version.
The game asks for a membership
Confirm that the active Switch user has both a Nintendo Account and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo lists both the account setup and paid membership as requirements, so being connected to Wi-Fi by itself is not sufficient.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA friend cannot find the lobby
Compare the lobby title, selected game, game version and region. Also check the participant limit and the rule that controls who may start matches. A mismatch in any of these settings can prevent the room from being used as intended even when both consoles are online.

There are too many people for the planned session
Use the published limits to choose another arrangement. Online supports 2–4 players, one system supports 1–2, and local wireless supports 2–8. A group that exceeds four should not expect to fit into one online session simply by increasing the lobby participant limit.
The lobby or matchmaking search is empty
Nintendo and Capcom’s official material used for this guide does not publish a current matchmaking population, average wait time or guarantee that a room will be available at a particular hour. An empty search result therefore cannot be converted into a reliable estimate of how many people are playing. Try a custom lobby with the correct game, version and region, or coordinate a session with a known group.
Local players cannot all join
Check the mode’s published limit and provide one compatible controller for each person on the same system. A single Switch is limited to two players, while the local-wireless specification allows up to eight. The Nintendo listing notes that additional controllers may be required.

Nintendo lists CAPCOM as the publisher, a 5 GB download size and 29 May 2018 as the Nintendo Switch release date. Those details identify the Switch edition discussed here; they do not expand online support to the other games in the collection.
The important distinction is between the collection as a product and the individual game entries inside it. The product includes 12 titles, but Capcom’s support information names only four overseas versions for online versus. Always choose the supported entry before troubleshooting your internet connection or membership.
What the official specifications do not establish
- They do not publish a current number of active Switch players.
- They do not publish an average matchmaking wait time.
- They do not guarantee that a public lobby will be available at a particular time.
- They do not state that all 12 games can be played online.
Those limits matter when planning a session. The reliable facts are the supported four-game list, Nintendo’s 2–4 online-player specification, the membership and account requirements, and the custom-lobby controls documented by Capcom.
