Yes. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X runs Windows 11, and ASUS says Steam is pre-installed on the ROG Xbox Ally family. You can sign in to Steam, download games in your library and launch them. That gives you access to Steam’s Windows client; it does not guarantee that every individual game is compatible or will run well.
How to install and launch Steam games
ASUS’s Ally-family guide describes this setup flow from the Xbox full-screen experience. Its instructions apply to the family, including the Ally X; they are manufacturer guidance, not a report of independent testing.
- Open Steam. Find it in the Xbox full-screen experience. ASUS says Steam comes pre-installed.
- Allow updates if prompted. Steam may need to update its Windows client before you can use it.
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns the games. If the sign-in window is hidden, ASUS says to use Task Switcher to find it.
- Download a game. Open your Steam Library, choose a title and install it.
- Launch it. Start the installed game from Steam. ASUS says installed games also appear in the Xbox app library.

No universal compatibility guarantee follows from Steam being available. ASUS describes the Ally X as a Windows 11 handheld and says it can access games that run on Windows, but that is a platform-level statement—not a verified compatibility list for every Steam title. ASUS’s FAQ says, “The ROG Xbox Ally runs on Windows 11, so you can access each and every game that runs on the Windows platform.” That does not establish that each listing has been tested on the Ally X.

Before installing a particular game, check its Windows system requirements and whether it depends on a separate launcher, specific controller support or anti-cheat software. Those details can affect whether the game works as you expect. No per-game compatibility verdicts or device-specific performance results are established here.
How Steam fits into the Xbox interface
The Ally X starts in a controller-oriented Xbox full-screen experience, but Windows 11 remains underneath. ASUS says you can open Steam and launch games without leaving that interface; it is a front end, not a replacement operating system.

Storage
Additional storage is optional, not a requirement for playing Steam games. ASUS says the Ally X’s M.2 drive uses the standard 2280 form factor and PCIe Gen4 speeds. If you plan to expand it, confirm the drive’s specifications and installation details before buying.

External display and peripherals
A dock is also optional. ASUS documents USB-C DisplayPort output and recommends its ROG Bulwark Dock (2025) DG300 or another 130W-capable dock for external-monitor use. Check the dock’s compatibility and power requirements for the setup you want.

- For a specific game: Verify Windows requirements and any launcher, controller or anti-cheat dependencies; Steam access alone does not settle compatibility.
