Yes, but only after preparation. Steam Offline Mode lets you launch installed games without an active Steam Network connection when each game supports offline operation. Games that require an online service or an external launcher will not work, and online features such as Friends and Chat, Steam Cloud synchronization, updates and LAN game-file transfers are unavailable until you reconnect.
What Steam Offline Mode actually does
Steam’s official description is precise: “Offline Mode allows you to play games through Steam without having an active connection to the Steam Network.” It is a client state designed for situations such as flights, travel, outages or computers that are deliberately kept offline. It is not a way to bypass a game’s own network requirement.
Offline Mode works only when the game is already installed, its required files are current, and the title can start without contacting Steam or another online service. Steam also warns that “Any Steam client feature that requires a connection will be unavailable while offline.” The result is a split experience: local content can continue, while network-backed services stop or wait until the next connection.

A single-player title with local files and no mandatory launcher can usually be prepared for offline use. A game that requires a live authentication service, continuous online verification, an online-only mode or a separate publisher client cannot be made playable merely by selecting Go Offline.

Prepare Steam before you lose internet access
Do this while Steam is online. The preparation is account- and installation-specific, so repeat the checks for every computer and every game you expect to use.
- Sign in online and enable Remember me. At Steam login, select Remember me so the client can use the stored sign-in information when it cannot reach the Steam Network.
- Finish all downloads. Confirm that Steam and each intended game have completely updated. Do not rely on a paused, queued or partially installed download.
- Launch each game once while online. Open every title you want to play offline, let any installation, first-run setup or update requirement complete, then exit the game normally. This step exposes a first-launch authentication or launcher requirement before you travel.
- Allow account credentials to be saved. Open Steam > Settings > Security and make sure Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected. If credentials are not stored, Steam may be unable to sign you in offline.
- Enter Offline Mode deliberately. Open the Steam menu and choose Go Offline. Let Steam restart or finish changing state, then verify that the client remains in Offline Mode.
- Test before departure. With your connection disabled, restart Steam and launch each planned game. A successful test is stronger evidence than a store-page description because updates, launchers and DRM policies can change.
Close Steam normally after testing. That gives the client an opportunity to retain its Offline Mode information. If you simply terminate the process or shut down during a state change, repeat the online preparation when you have a connection.
Which games are suitable for offline play?
Steam does not provide one permanent, universal offline badge that overrides a game’s design. Evaluate each title against the following questions before relying on it without Wi-Fi.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Check | What a “yes” means | Risk when the answer is “no” or unclear |
|---|---|---|
| Does the game have a mandatory online connection? | It may be able to start and run locally after preparation. | An online-only title will not work in Offline Mode. |
| Does launch invoke an external DRM or publisher client? | No additional service is needed beyond the prepared Steam installation. | The external client may require its own sign-in or network check and prevent launch. |
| Must the first launch be authenticated online? | Complete that authentication while connected, then test again offline. | A first-run prompt can block you after you leave home. |
| Are saves local or Steam Cloud-backed? | Local saves can continue on that computer without synchronization. | Cloud-backed progress will not upload or download while offline, creating a conflict risk after reconnection. |
| Is multiplayer local or online? | Local modes may work if the game itself supports them without an online service. | Online multiplayer, matchmaking, servers and other network-dependent modes will be unavailable. |
| How often are updates required? | A fully updated installation is less likely to be stopped by a pending patch. | Steam and the game will not receive important updates while offline. |
Game eligibility can change after an update, a launcher change or a DRM-policy change. Treat an offline test on the exact installed version as part of trip preparation, not as a lifetime guarantee.
What continues to work in Offline Mode
Installed single-player games
An installed game that supports offline operation can launch without reconnecting to Steam every time. Its local executable, installed assets and offline-capable modes remain available. The game’s own design still determines whether a particular campaign, mode or menu needs network services.
Local saves on the same computer
Games that write saves locally can continue recording progress while you are disconnected. Those files remain on that machine until you reconnect or copy them by another method. Offline play does not, however, make a local save available on another computer; that requires a transfer or a later synchronization service.

Offline-capable game modes
Campaigns, practice modes or other locally implemented content can work when the title does not enforce an online requirement. Local multiplayer may also be possible if the game supports it without Steam networking or an external server, but the game’s documentation and an offline test are the authority for that mode.

Steam can remain open in Offline Mode and launch eligible installed titles without repeatedly asking for a network connection. You can browse the locally available library and start those games, but connection-dependent community and account services are not available.
What stops working or waits until you reconnect
Friends and Chat
Going offline signs you out of the Steam community. Friends lists that depend on the community service, chat messages and other online-dependent social features are unavailable. You cannot use Offline Mode as a way to continue a live Steam conversation.
Steam Cloud
Steam Cloud does not synchronize saves while you are offline. A game can still create a local save, but no upload occurs and no newer cloud save is downloaded. When you reconnect, Steam warns that a Cloud conflict is likely if both the local and cloud copies changed. Review timestamps and the actual progress in each copy before selecting which version to keep; choosing the wrong one can overwrite the progress you intended to preserve.
You can disable Steam Cloud for an individual game. In that configuration, progress remains local to that computer rather than being synchronized by Steam. Disabling Cloud does not make an online-only game playable and does not copy saves to another device.

Steam and game updates
Offline Mode prevents Steam and games from receiving important updates. A title may continue to run on its installed version, but a later patch, required content download or changed service policy will not arrive until you reconnect. Reconnect before travel when possible, and reconnect periodically afterward so security, compatibility and content updates can be applied.

LAN game-file transfers
Steam’s local network transfer feature is not available when either client is offline. Both Steam clients must be online, on the same LAN and able to see each other directly for a transfer to run. Two computers in Offline Mode cannot exchange game files through Steam merely because they share a router.
Games with mandatory online services or external launchers
A game that requires an active connection, a live authentication service or an external launcher will not work in Offline Mode unless that service has its own supported offline state and has already been prepared. Steam’s Offline Mode cannot replace a publisher client’s login, a server-side entitlement check or a game’s required online session.
How saves behave during a trip
Before leaving, identify where each game stores progress and decide which copy is authoritative. A local-save game can keep working entirely offline, but Steam Cloud-backed games create two independent states: the copy on the computer and the copy last stored online.
- Play and save normally while disconnected.
- Do not assume the cloud copy reflects your latest offline progress.
- When you regain internet access, read Steam’s conflict prompt rather than accepting a default choice.
- Compare the local and cloud versions using the game’s progress, timestamps or save-slot names.
- Keep the copy that contains the progress you want, then allow synchronization to complete.
If a game’s progress is especially important, make a separate backup of its local save files before reconnecting. The exact folder is game-specific, so use the title’s own support instructions; Steam Cloud settings alone do not identify every local save location.
Using Steam on a plane or without Wi-Fi
Yes, Steam games can work on a plane or anywhere without Wi-Fi when the preparation has already been completed and the installed titles pass an offline test. Turn on the computer’s offline state, start Steam and launch a prepared game. Do not wait until boarding to discover that a first launch, update or external client is required.
A practical travel checklist is:
- Steam login has been tested with Remember me enabled.
- Every intended game is fully installed and updated.
- Each game has been launched and closed once while online.
- Steam > Settings > Security does not have Don’t save account credentials on this computer selected.
- Steam has been placed in Go Offline mode and restarted successfully.
- Each game has launched with the network disabled.
- You know which games use local saves and which rely on Steam Cloud after reconnection.
Battery limits, operating-system restrictions and the game’s own hardware requirements still apply on a flight. Offline Mode removes the Steam Network requirement; it does not remove the computer’s need to run the game.

- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Troubleshooting when a prepared game will not start
Steam asks you to sign in again
Reconnect if possible and verify that Remember me was selected and that Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected under Steam > Settings > Security. Enter Offline Mode from the Steam menu while online, then test a full restart before disconnecting again.
The game reports that an update is required
Return online, let Steam finish all queued downloads and launch the game once more. A partially downloaded update can leave the installation unable to start offline.
An external launcher appears
Reconnect and determine whether that launcher supports its own offline state. Complete its first-run setup while online and test the title with the network disabled. If the launcher requires a live connection, Steam Offline Mode cannot override it.
The game opens but a mode is unavailable
That mode probably depends on matchmaking, a server, cloud data or another online service. Use the title’s local campaign or practice features if available; do not assume that an offline-capable executable makes every mode offline-capable.
Progress looks wrong after reconnecting
Stop before launching repeatedly or accepting a Cloud prompt automatically. Steam may be presenting a conflict between the offline local save and the older online copy. Compare both versions and select deliberately, then confirm that synchronization finishes.
Reconnect safely after offline play
- Connect to the internet and open Steam normally.
- Allow Steam and installed games to check for updates; do not interrupt downloads that are required for the current version.
- Resolve any Steam Cloud conflict by examining which local or cloud copy contains your offline progress.
- Launch the game once online to confirm that its updated files and services work together.
- Before the next trip, repeat the offline test if the game, launcher or DRM components changed.
Keeping Offline Mode for extended periods is possible for eligible games, but Steam itself advises reconnecting because important client and game updates cannot arrive while offline.
Bottom line for choosing games to take offline
Choose installed titles with a proven local single-player mode, no mandatory online connection, no unprepared external launcher and saves you understand. Prepare and test them online, enter Offline Mode explicitly, and expect Friends and Chat, Steam Cloud synchronization, updates and Steam LAN transfers to be absent. If a game’s requirements change, your previous success is no longer enough: test the exact installation again before depending on it without internet access.
