If you mean the upcoming Stage Fright from Ghost Town Games, online play with a friend is announced, while solo play has not been confirmed. The developers describe it as a two-player co-op adventure playable either locally or online. The online version is planned as split-screen so both players can see what the other is doing.
That answer applies to the Ghost Town Games project, not Stage Fright by Broan Games, an older single-player rhythm-horror title listed separately on Steam. The official announcement and an October 9, 2026 PC Gamer interview describe the new game as a planned 2027 release, so its final modes and setup details could still change.
What the announced game supports
Ghost Town Games has announced Stage Fright as a two-player co-op adventure. Its Steam Community announcement says two people can play together locally or online, with a story built around a long-form mystery, escape-room-style puzzles and physical obstacles. PC Gamer’s October 9, 2026 interview with co-director Oliver De-Vine also reports local and online play. That article lists Steam and Nintendo Switch as platforms and describes the timing as Early 2027. Early and Spring are planning windows rather than a guaranteed launch date, and neither source says the game is available to play now.

Can you play Stage Fright solo?
A solo campaign or single-player mode has not been announced in the cited material. That is different from saying solo play is impossible: the developers may add or explain a solo option before launch, but the available descriptions focus on a two-player experience.
If you are deciding whether to buy or wishlist the game for solo use, treat solo support as an open question. Can you play with online friends?
Yes, online two-player co-op is explicitly announced. A friend should be able to join remotely rather than sitting at the same console or computer. The design goal is not a conventional online mode in which each person sees only their own screen; the developers say online play uses split-screen.
Split-screen online means the game keeps both players’ views visible in one shared session. You can watch your partner move, inspect an object or try an action, then coordinate your response. That matters because the puzzles depend on noticing environmental details and discussing what each person sees.

Why the developers chose online split-screen
De-Vine told PC Gamer: “Even though our game is both local and online, we are trying to make the experience of online as similar to the local experience as possible. So the game is splitscreen online as well, because it does depend on being able to see what the other player is doing and communicate about what they’re seeing in the environment.” Read the full PC Gamer interview.
Designer Phil Duncan described the target as getting online play as close as possible to sitting beside another person: “The ideal situation is that you’re sat next to someone and you’re nudging them and you point at the same thing. So it’s as close as we can get to that online.” Those comments explain the split-screen choice, but they do not establish a required headset, built-in voice chat or any particular communication app.
Local versus online co-op
Both options have the same announced player count—two people—but the practical experience is different. The table separates what is confirmed from details that have not yet been published.

The absence of a published requirement is not proof that no requirement exists. It only means you should wait for the final platform instructions before assuming that one copy, two copies, a particular controller arrangement or a specific subscription will work.
How communication fits the puzzles
The developers present conversation as part of the intended play pattern. Puzzles use objects and visual information that may be easier to solve when one player describes what they see and the other suggests what to try. In local play, that can be as simple as pointing at a screen or handing over the controller. Online split-screen is meant to preserve some of that shared awareness.

You can plan for effective communication without treating any accessory as mandatory. A voice call, platform voice chat or text chat may help, but the cited announcements do not confirm which communication features the game itself will provide. If you play online, agree on a way to describe locations and objects clearly, especially when both screens contain similar details.

- Give the other player time to check their screen for a matching clue.
- Try one change at a time so you can tell which action solved or altered the puzzle.
This is practical advice based on the developers’ emphasis on seeing and discussing the environment; it is not a confirmed in-game tutorial or required procedure.
Platforms, release timing and availability
The Steam announcement lists a Spring 2027 release window. PC Gamer’s October 9, 2026 interview summarizes the timing as Early 2027 and lists Steam and Nintendo Switch. Because those descriptions use different seasonal wording, the safest expectation is a planned 2027 launch rather than a fixed date.

Is crossplay confirmed?
No. The sources confirm online play but do not say whether a Steam player can join a Nintendo Switch player. Online multiplayer and cross-platform multiplayer are separate features, so you should not infer crossplay from the existence of an online mode.

Until Ghost Town Games publishes a platform-compatibility chart or support instructions, assume only that online co-op is planned within the supported release ecosystem. Check the official store listing and launch documentation for the exact combinations of platforms that can play together.
What is not yet known about online setup
The announcement and interview do not provide a step-by-step invitation flow. They do not say whether you will invite through a friend list, use a room code, join through a platform overlay or select a host from an in-game menu. They also do not specify whether both players need separate purchases, accounts or online subscriptions.
Those are normal launch questions, but guessing would create unreliable instructions. When setup information is published, look for these specific details:
- How the host creates a session.
- How the second player accepts or enters an invitation.
- Whether players must be on the same platform family.
- Whether crossplay is supported between Steam and Nintendo Switch.
- Whether each participant needs a separate game license.
- What happens if the host disconnects or a player leaves.
Until those points are documented, the confirmed answer remains limited to the existence of two-player online co-op and the split-screen presentation.

The developers say communication is central, but they do not state that a microphone is required. A microphone may make online coordination easier, while text or an external voice call could be alternatives. Treat those as player choices, not announced hardware requirements.

No source cited here specifies controller support, keyboard-and-mouse support, a minimum number of gamepads, motion controls or a headset requirement. Avoid buying an accessory solely on the assumption that Stage Fright will require it. Wait for the official control and system requirements for your platform.
Do not confuse the two games called Stage Fright
Search results can mix the upcoming Ghost Town Games adventure with Stage Fright by Broan Games. Steam lists the Broan Games title as a released single-player rhythm-and-horror game. Its single-player label does not describe the new co-op adventure.
To identify the game you mean, check the developer name and the context: Ghost Town Games is the team behind the announced two-player mystery adventure, while Broan Games is associated with the separate older rhythm-horror release. The Ghost Town Games announcement is tied to Steam app 3260750 at steamcommunity.com/app/3260750.
What to expect if you play locally
Local co-op is the most direct match for the developers’ stated ideal of sitting beside another person. You can point at the same display, react immediately and coordinate without relying on an online connection.
