Yes. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds supports online cross-play, so players on different supported platforms can race together. For a private group, use Friend Match; PlayStation describes it as a custom-rule lobby for up to 12 players. Every participant still needs the game on their own platform, and Nintendo Switch players need a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play.
What cross-play means in CrossWorlds
SEGA announced online multiplayer cross-play for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds on June 9, 2025, describing competition across different supported platforms. SEGA repeated that cross-play was active in its September 25, 2025 launch announcement. In practical terms, a PlayStation player can race with a PC, Xbox or Nintendo player when the relevant platforms and online services are supported.
Cross-play is different from cross-buy. The official announcements confirm that players on different platforms can compete together; they do not say that buying one edition gives you the game on another platform. Each friend should plan on owning a compatible copy for the platform they use.

Which platforms support online play?
SEGA lists the following platform families for the game:

The dates distinguish the initial console release from the PC release. They do not imply that one platform’s purchase transfers to another, nor do they establish that every possible console-generation combination has identical behavior. If you are arranging a specific pairing, check the current game and platform-holder listings for that pairing.
Which mode should friends use?
Friend Match for a private group
Friend Match is the relevant choice when you want to coordinate with people you know. PlayStation’s official product page describes Friend Match as online play in lobbies of up to 12 players, with custom rules. That makes it the appropriate place to look for a private or friend-group session rather than relying on a public matchmaking queue.
The 12-player figure is the published lobby capacity, not a promise that every race format, rule combination or platform pairing will always fill all 12 places. The game may present different options depending on the version and the current online service.

Public matchmaking is a different use case
If you simply want to race available players, use the game’s public online option instead of building a private group. The official material confirms cross-play broadly but does not document every mode’s availability for every platform pair. For a planned session with friends, start with Friend Match and follow the invitation controls shown in the current game interface.
How to play with a friend on another platform
The exact invitation workflow can change with updates and can differ by platform. The official pages reviewed do not publish a universal account-linking or invite sequence. Use this platform-neutral process, then follow the labels currently displayed on screen:
- Confirm ownership and installation. Each player should have Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds installed on a supported platform: PlayStation 4 or 5, Xbox One or Series X|S, Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, Steam, or the Epic Games Store.
- Bring every system online. Sign in to the platform account used to play, verify that the console or PC can reach its online service, and install any update the game requires before starting the session.
- Open the online multiplayer area. From the main menu, select the option that leads to online play and choose Friend Match. Menu wording can change, so use the current in-game label rather than an old screenshot or guide.
- Create or join the friend lobby. The player hosting the session should use the Friend Match controls to create a lobby and select the available custom rules. Other players should use the corresponding join or invitation control shown by their version.
- Invite or share the lobby through the game’s displayed method. The reviewed official pages do not specify whether a particular platform pair uses an in-game friend list, a lobby code, or a platform notification. Use the method the current Friend Match screen provides.
- Check the roster before starting. Make sure each intended friend appears in the lobby and that the selected rules are acceptable. Friend Match supports up to 12 players according to PlayStation’s product description.
- Start the race. If a friend cannot join, leave the lobby open while you check the troubleshooting items below instead of repeatedly creating new sessions.
What each player needs
A copy on the platform being used
Cross-play connects separate platform versions; it does not replace the need to own the game on the device where you are playing. A Steam player, for example, needs the PC edition through Steam, while a PlayStation player needs the PlayStation edition. No official statement in the launch material promises cross-platform entitlement.

An internet connection and a platform account
Online races require a working internet connection and the normal account used by the platform. Keep the game updated on every system, because a version mismatch can prevent players from entering the same session even when cross-play itself is supported.

Nintendo’s product listing specifically says that Nintendo Switch Online is required to play online. This is a Switch-specific requirement documented by Nintendo. The available sources do not establish identical subscription requirements for PlayStation, Xbox or PC, so do not assume that the Switch rule applies to every platform.
What the official confirmation does—and does not—tell you
SEGA’s wording confirms the central compatibility question: online multiplayer cross-play works across different supported platforms, allowing players around the world to compete together. It does not publish a matrix showing every platform pair, generation combination or region.

- Confirmed: Friend Match is intended for organized sessions and is described as supporting up to 12 players with custom rules.
- Not specified in the cited pages: the exact invitation or account-linking steps.
- Not specified in the cited pages: whether every cross-generation combination, region combination or game mode is available in every circumstance.
- Not specified in the cited pages: whether one purchase unlocks another platform edition.
Those limits matter when a friend asks a narrower question such as whether a particular older console can join a particular newer console in a specific region. The broad answer is yes for supported cross-play, but the pair-specific answer should come from the current in-game interface or the relevant platform-holder support page.

The friend cannot see or join the lobby
- Confirm that both players selected Friend Match rather than different online modes.
- Check that both copies are fully updated and that each player is signed in to the intended platform account.
- Verify that the host has actually created the lobby and used the invitation or join method shown in the current interface.
- Check the platform’s online-service status and each player’s internet connection.
- On Nintendo Switch, confirm that the player has the Nintendo Switch Online membership Nintendo requires for online play.
The lobby works for some friends but not another
That pattern does not prove that cross-play is disabled. It may indicate a platform-specific service problem, a version mismatch, a restriction on the particular platform pair, or a regional or account condition that the general announcements do not describe. Record the two exact platforms, their game versions and the region of the accounts, then consult the current support information for that combination.

The invite controls do not match an older guide
Use the controls presented by your installed version. Official pages confirm the Friend Match feature but do not freeze a single universal menu layout. Avoid relying on instructions that name a button, account-linking page or lobby-code system unless that control is visible in the current game.

Planning a 12-player session
Friend Match’s published capacity is 12 players, so appoint one host and collect everyone’s platform and account names before opening the lobby. Decide the rules in advance, then have players join before the host starts the race. If the group is larger than 12, split it into multiple sessions; the official description does not state that a single Friend Match lobby can exceed 12 participants.
For a mixed-platform group, write down which edition each person uses—PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Steam or Epic Games Store—and confirm the online-service prerequisite for Switch players. This prevents a membership issue from being mistaken for a cross-play failure.
Does cross-play include every platform combination?
SEGA’s announcements use broad language covering different supported platforms, which is enough to answer the ordinary question: friends do not have to use the same platform family. However, the cited announcements do not enumerate every pair, such as each older-to-newer console combination, or state whether regional service restrictions apply. Treat those cases as unconfirmed until the current game interface or official support documentation gives a direct answer.

If a specific mode is missing, check whether that mode is offered to the host’s platform and whether all participants meet its displayed requirements.
Release and product context
The initial console versions launched on September 25, 2025, while the Steam and Epic Games Store versions launched on September 26, 2025. PlayStation and Nintendo product pages list 24 tracks, 15 CrossWorlds, 23 characters, 45 vehicles and 70 gadgets. Those figures describe the product, not a separate cross-play requirement, and they do not change the basic process for joining a Friend Match.
Bottom line for mixed-platform groups
You can play Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds online with friends on different supported platforms. Have every player use their own platform edition, choose Friend Match for a private custom lobby, and plan for a maximum of 12 players. Nintendo Switch players must have Nintendo Switch Online for online play. Because the official announcements do not document every invite flow, platform pair or regional rule, use the current Friend Match screen and platform-holder support information when a particular combination does not connect.
