No—not the PS5 console version. A Steam Deck cannot install and execute software built for the PlayStation 5. Sony’s Remote Play technology only streams a game that is running on a PS5, so it requires both the console and a network connection.
You can play a game locally on Steam Deck without Wi‑Fi when that game has a separate Windows/Steam release that works with SteamOS and Proton. That is a different PC build, not the PS5 build, and it must be installed and prepared for offline use in advance.
The answer depends on which “PS5 game” you mean
People use “PS5 games” to describe two different things:

- A PS5 console build: the version installed on PlayStation 5 and designed for Sony’s console operating system.
- A PC release of the same title: a separate Windows version distributed through Steam or another PC storefront.
The first category cannot run natively on Steam Deck. The second may run locally if its PC build is compatible with SteamOS, Proton, the Deck’s hardware and the game’s own launcher or digital-rights checks. A game sharing a name, characters or save files with a PS5 release does not make the two versions interchangeable.

Why the PS5 build will not install on Steam Deck
Steam Deck is a handheld PC. Its operating system and compatibility layer can run Linux-native games and many Windows PC games, but they do not emulate the PS5’s operating system and hardware environment. A PS5 download, disc image or console license therefore has no executable format that Steam Deck can launch as a local game.
Installing a microSD card, connecting a DualSense controller or using a dock changes storage, controls or display options only. None of those accessories supplies the missing console software environment.
How Remote Play works—and why it fails the no-console, no-internet test
Remote Play does not port a PS5 game to Steam Deck. The PS5 performs the rendering and game processing, compresses the video stream and sends it to another device. The receiving device sends controller input back to the console. Steam Deck is acting as a screen and controller endpoint rather than running the game itself.

Sony’s Remote Play documentation states: “A PS4 or PS5 console is required to stream your games to another devices.” The wording is Sony’s; the practical requirement is unambiguous: a PS5 must be powered on or in an allowed rest-mode state, signed into the appropriate account and reachable by the client device.
Remote Play requirements

The 5 Mbps figure is a minimum for both directions, not a promise of stable image quality or low latency. Congestion, Wi‑Fi interference, router performance and distance from the access point can make a session stutter even when a speed test exceeds that number. Sony’s 15 Mbps recommendation gives more headroom, but it still does not convert streaming into offline play.
Does same-home Wi‑Fi count as offline?
No. A local connection can keep traffic inside your home and often reduces the delay compared with sending it through the wider internet, but the Deck and PS5 still exchange a live video-and-input stream. The console remains mandatory, and disconnecting the network ends the session.

Typical Remote Play setup
- Enable Remote Play on the PS5 in Settings > System > Remote Play > Enable Remote Play.
- In Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, allow the console to stay connected to the internet and enable turning on the PS5 from the network if you want to wake it remotely.
- Connect the Deck and PS5 to a reliable network. For a same-home session, use the same router; wired Ethernet to the PS5 can reduce wireless congestion.
- Install a Remote Play client that works with your Deck setup, sign in with the PlayStation account associated with the console and pair the device when prompted.
- Start the session and select the PS5. The Deck displays the console interface, so game launches, save data and account permissions are handled by the PS5.
- If the stream is unstable, move the Deck closer to the access point, reduce competing traffic and verify that the PS5 is not being placed into a power state that prevents wake-up.
Exact client availability and controller behavior can change, so treat the client’s current compatibility notes as a separate requirement from Sony’s console and network requirements.
Playing a local PC version on Steam Deck
The practical way to play without owning a PS5 is to obtain a genuine PC release of the title. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says, “Yes, you can run non-Steam games through Proton.” Proton translates many Windows game calls for SteamOS, but it is not a PS5 compatibility layer. It helps with Windows PC builds only.
Check whether the title has a PC release
Search the current Steam store listing or the publisher’s PC product page for the exact game. Confirm that the listing is a Windows/Steam edition rather than a console-only release. Do not assume that buying a PS5 copy grants a Steam license: the cited platform documentation establishes how Remote Play and PC compatibility work, not cross-buy rights.

Availability can differ by region, edition and release date. A title may have a PC port while a particular expansion, multiplayer mode or generation-specific feature does not. Check the individual game’s system requirements, launcher requirements and current Deck Verified status instead of relying on the franchise name.
Install and validate offline access
- While online, install the PC version through Steam and let downloads, shader caches and updates finish.
- Launch the game once. Complete account sign-in, first-run configuration and any launcher authorization while connected.
- Read the game’s store notes and launcher settings for always-online requirements, anti-cheat restrictions or periodic license checks.
- Exit the game and Steam cleanly. Then choose Steam > Go Offline and restart the Deck if Steam requests it.
- Launch the game in offline mode, load a local save and test the controls, graphics and any content you need before traveling.
- Return online periodically for updates or services that the title genuinely requires. If an update changes its launcher or DRM behavior, repeat the offline test.
Valve’s guidance is conditional: “Once a game is installed on disk, you can play while Steam Deck is offline unless the game requires an internet connection.” “Installed” does not guarantee “offline-capable.” A game can be fully downloaded yet refuse to start because its launcher, authentication service, anti-cheat system or multiplayer backend needs a live connection.
What Deck Verified status tells you
Steam’s Deck compatibility label is a useful starting point, not a permanent guarantee. A Verified or Playable result reflects Valve’s checks at a particular point in time. Updates to the game, Proton, SteamOS or a third-party launcher can alter behavior. Read the detailed compatibility notes for small text, keyboard prompts, unsupported anti-cheat and control-layout issues.

For an offline trip, test the exact build you intend to use. Include the campaign or mode you plan to play, because a game can launch offline while a separate multiplayer mode remains unavailable.

- Correct version: you own and installed the PC build, not merely a PS5 license.
- Completed installation: downloads, patches and required redistributables have finished.
- First launch completed: account linking and one-time authorization succeeded while online.
- Offline mode enabled: Steam has been switched to offline mode before losing connectivity.
- DRM verified: the game’s launcher does not demand a live check at every start.
- Local saves available: the save you need is stored on the Deck, not only in a cloud service.
- Controls tested: the game works with the Deck’s built-in controls or your paired controller.
- Storage available: there is room for the game, updates and shader data; a microSD card can add capacity.

Common problems and fixes
“I copied the PS5 game to a microSD card, but Steam does not see it.”
A PS5 installation is not a Windows or Linux PC installation. Copying files cannot transform the console build. Find an official PC release and install that version through its supported storefront.
“Remote Play finds my Deck but disconnects immediately.”
Check that Remote Play is enabled, the PS5 is awake or configured for network wake-up, both devices can reach each other and your connection is not below Sony’s stated minimum. Test near the router, pause large downloads and use a wired connection to the PS5 where possible. A local network may improve latency, but it remains a network-dependent stream.

Reconnect before leaving and complete every first-run sign-in or launcher update. Put Steam in offline mode deliberately, then launch the game and load a local save. If it still fails, the title likely has an online check or an unsupported launcher dependency; no accessory can remove that requirement.
“The game is marked Playable, but controls or graphics are wrong.”
Open the game’s compatibility details, try the recommended Proton version, select an appropriate controller layout and check community reports for the current game update. Compatibility is title-specific and can change, so test after major updates.
