No. A PS4 cannot run a game’s PS5 version. Some cross-generation games include separate PS4 and PS5 editions, and selected PS4 purchases can be upgraded to a digital PS5 edition. That upgraded edition still runs only on a PS5. Eligibility, price and availability are set separately for each game, so check its current PlayStation Store listing before paying for an upgrade.
PS4 and PS5 compatibility at a glance
Compatibility works mainly in one direction: a PS5 can run most PS4 games, but a PS4 cannot run software built for PS5. Buying a PS4 game, downloading an upgrade or owning a PS5 edition does not add PS5 capability to the older console.

Why a PS4 cannot play the PS5 edition
A PS5 game edition is compiled and tested for the PS5’s hardware and operating environment. The PS4 does not provide a compatibility layer that converts PS5 software into a PS4 application. Consequently, the PS5 edition will not appear as a playable installation on a PS4, even when you own the same game on disc or through your account.

They may share a title, story and online service, but they remain distinct applications. On a PS5, owners who have access to both can generally choose which version to download or launch. That choice does not make the PS5 application available on PS4.

How PS4-to-PS5 upgrades work
An upgrade is an entitlement for a PS5 version, not a performance update for the PS4. Each publisher decides whether a particular title has an offer, whether it is free or paid, and how long it remains available. Never assume that an upgrade is free or permanent because another game used those terms.
Upgrading a physical PS4 disc
- Confirm on the game’s current PlayStation Store page or PS5 game hub that a disc-based PS5 upgrade exists.
- Sign in on the PS5 with the PlayStation account you intend to use for the game.
- Insert the PS4 disc and open the game hub. Select the displayed upgrade offer and review its price and conditions before accepting.
- Download the PS5 edition after the entitlement is granted. The download may be digital even though your ownership is based on a disc.
- Keep the PS4 disc inserted each time you launch the upgraded game. The disc acts as the license check.
The disc must come from the same country or region as the PlayStation account. A mismatch can prevent the offer from appearing or stop the license from validating. A PS4 disc cannot be used for this process on a PS5 Digital Edition, because that console has no disc drive.
Upgrading a digital PS4 purchase
- On the PS5, sign in to the account that bought the digital PS4 game.
- Use Search or open PlayStation Store, then select the game’s PS5 game hub.
- Look for an upgrade option and read the displayed price, expiration date or other restrictions.
- Accept the offer, if it is worthwhile, and download the PS5 edition from the hub or your game library.
Games obtained through a PlayStation Plus benefit are excluded from digital upgrade offers unless the title explicitly states otherwise. A subscription license is therefore not automatically treated like a retail purchase.
When there is no upgrade
You can still install and play the PS4 edition on a PS5 when that title is supported by backward compatibility. This is a different outcome from receiving the PS5 edition: graphics, loading times, modes and feature support remain those of the PS4 application unless the developer separately enhanced them.
Conditions to check before accepting an offer
Use these questions to compare an upgrade with simply continuing to play the PS4 edition:
- Eligibility: Is your exact disc, digital purchase or edition included?
- Price: Is the current charge zero, a one-time fee or a purchase of a new edition?
- Availability: Does the offer have an end date or regional limitation?
- Ownership type: Is your copy physical, digitally purchased or a PlayStation Plus benefit?
- Hardware: If you own a disc, does your PS5 have a disc drive?
- Region: Does the disc’s country or region match the country or region on your account?
- Saved progress: Does the developer support transfer from the PS4 application to the PS5 application?
- Storage: Do you have enough free space for a separate PS5 installation?
The Store page and game hub are the authoritative places to verify the current terms for your account and region. Offers can change after launch, so an older article or a launch-day announcement may no longer describe what you see.

What backward compatibility on PS5 actually covers
PlayStation describes the PS5 as backward compatible with the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 games. That statement concerns playing PS4 software on PS5; it does not imply that PS4 can run PS5 software.

Check the individual title before buying add-ons or downloadable content for use on PS5, particularly if a feature is important to your play style.
Backward compatibility also does not guarantee identical performance. A game may load faster or run more smoothly on newer hardware, but the available modes and features depend on the game’s implementation. Treat “playable” as a compatibility statement, not a promise of a full PS5 enhancement.
Do PS4 saves transfer to the PS5 version?
Save migration is decided by the game’s developer and varies by title. Sony executive Hideaki Nishino wrote in a 2020 PlayStation.Blog FAQ that “the ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision, and will vary title by title for cross-generational games.”
Do not delete the PS4 installation or overwrite local saves until you have checked the game’s current instructions. Some developers provide an in-game upload and download tool, some use cloud storage, and some do not support moving progress between versions. Online progression can also follow different rules from local campaign saves.

If you own PS4 discs
Choose a PS5 model with a disc drive if you want to use physical PS4 games or claim disc-based upgrade offers. You must insert the qualifying disc for every play session after the PS5 version is installed. A digital-only PS5 cannot read the disc, so it cannot validate that type of upgrade.

If all your games are digital
A PS5 Digital Edition can use eligible digital PS4 purchases and digital upgrade offers. It cannot accept a physical PS4 disc as proof of ownership. Confirm that the game in your library was purchased by the account currently signed in on the PS5.

There is no universal upgrade price. A publisher may provide a no-additional-cost entitlement, charge a fee or require purchase of a different edition. The same game can have different terms by region, edition or purchase method. Limited-time offers can disappear, so record the terms shown in your Store listing rather than relying on a general claim that a game “has a free upgrade.”
For disc owners, the upgraded PS5 download does not turn the disc into a standalone digital license: the disc remains necessary at launch. For digital owners, the entitlement is tied to the purchasing PlayStation account. Changing consoles does not change those account or region rules.

Troubleshooting an upgrade that is missing or will not launch
The upgrade option is not shown
- Open the PS5 game hub rather than only the PS4 tile in your library.
- Verify that you are signed in to the account that owns the game.
- Check whether the title excludes PlayStation Plus benefit copies.
- Compare the disc region with the account region if you own a physical copy.
- Look for an end date or a title-specific edition requirement.
The download completed but the game asks for a disc
This is expected for a disc-based entitlement. Insert the qualifying PS4 disc before launching. If you own a PS5 Digital Edition, that hardware cannot validate the disc and you need a digital license or a PS5 with a disc drive.
The PS5 version starts but progress is missing
Check the developer’s instructions for save migration, then confirm that the PS4 save is present on the same account or console storage. Do not assume that cloud synchronization alone converts a PS4 save into a PS5 save; the game must support the transfer.
The PS4 version is the only one available
The title may not have an upgrade, your copy may be ineligible, or the offer may have ended. You can continue using the compatible PS4 edition on PS5, but a PS4 console still cannot run the PS5 edition.
A practical checklist before you buy or upgrade
- Identify whether your copy is a disc, a direct digital purchase or a PlayStation Plus benefit.
- Open the current Store listing for the exact game and region.
- Confirm that the offer applies to your edition and note its price and expiration terms.
- Make sure your PS5 hardware matches the ownership method, especially whether it has a disc drive.
- Check the developer’s save-transfer guidance before starting the PS5 edition.
- Leave the PS4 copy installed until your saves and required downloadable content are confirmed on PS5.
The practical answer
PS5 games are not playable on PS4. Your options are to keep using the PS4 edition on your PS4, claim a title-specific PS5 upgrade and play that edition on PS5, or run the compatible PS4 edition on a PS5 without upgrading. The decisive details are the game’s current offer, your purchase type, the PS5 model, account region and the developer’s save-transfer policy.
