Not natively. A PS4 cannot install or run a PS5 game as PS4 software. You can, however, stream a PS5 game to a PS4 using PlayStation Remote Play—but the game must run on a PS5, which sends the picture and controls over a network. The PS4 is the screen-and-controller endpoint, not a substitute for the PS5.
Can a PS4 run PS5 games natively?
No. PlayStation’s supported-platform descriptions distinguish PS5 games from PS4 games, and describe playing PS5 games on a PS4 through streaming rather than native execution. That means you cannot use a PS4 to install and run the PS5 version of a game on its own. This is an inference from PlayStation’s published compatibility and Remote Play information, rather than a categorical sentence on its current support page.
PlayStation’s backward-compatibility support covers the opposite direction: the PS5 can play the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, though some features may be unavailable or games may behave unexpectedly. That does not mean PS4 hardware can run PS5 titles. PlayStation’s PS5 backward-compatibility information
How to play a PS5 game on a PS4 with Remote Play
Remote Play streams a game from your PS5 to another supported device. PlayStation describes the feature this way: “PS Remote Play lets you stream and play your PS4 and PS5 games.” For a PS5 game viewed on a PS4, the PS5 runs the game and the PS4 receives the stream.

- "Suspend mode" eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button.
- Enables the greatest game developers in the world to unlock their creativity and push the boundaries of play through a platform that is tuned specifically to their needs.
- Engage in endless personal challenges between you and your community, and share your epic moments for the world to see.
- Gamers can share their epic triumphs by hitting the "SHARE button" on the controller, scan through the last few minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game.
- Have access to a PS5. It must be the source console for the PS5 game; Remote Play does not let a PS4 access the game independently.
- Use the same PlayStation account on both consoles. PlayStation lists this as a requirement for streaming PS5 games to a PS4.
- Set up Remote Play on the consoles. Follow PlayStation’s official Remote Play setup instructions for current settings and steps.
- Connect the consoles to a suitable network and start the stream. The PS4 acts as the endpoint while the PS5 processes the game.
- Use a compatible controller. PlayStation lists a compatible controller as a general Remote Play requirement, with supported touch-control or PlayStation Portal cases as exceptions.
PlayStation’s Remote Play information describes streaming PS5 games to a PS4 over a home broadband network and lists a compatible game, the free Remote Play app, a connected console and a compatible device among the requirements. Consult the official setup page for details that may depend on your device and console settings.
What internet speed does Remote Play need?
PlayStation lists 5 Mbps as the minimum internet connection speed and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience on its current Remote Play support page, accessed October 7, 2026. These are bandwidth guidelines, not guarantees of smooth play, a particular resolution or low delay. Network latency and connection stability also affect the experience. Native play and Remote Play compared
| Option | Where the PS5 game runs | PS5 required? | Network required? | Role of the PS4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native play on a PS4 | Not supported | — | — | A PS4 cannot run the PS5 game itself. |
| Remote Play to a PS4 | On the PS5 | Yes | Yes | The PS4 receives the stream and provides the remote-play endpoint. |
PlayStation’s current Remote Play page establishes the streaming route. Its November 2020 PS5 FAQ also described PS5-to-PS4 Remote Play; that older FAQ corroborates the route but should not be read as a current performance guarantee.

What Remote Play does not do
- It does not turn a PS4 into a PS5 or make PS5 games run locally on PS4 hardware.
- It does not remove the need for a PS5 that can run the game.
- It does not guarantee a particular image quality or response time; PlayStation’s speed recommendations are not performance promises.
