Yes, but not in the same way on every device. A Windows PC or Mac can stream a game from your PS5 with Sony’s PS Remote Play app, and some PlayStation Studios games have separate native PC releases. A PS4 cannot run a PS5-native game locally; it can only act as a Remote Play endpoint in supported setups. PlayStation Portal is also a streaming endpoint: ordinary Remote Play requires a PS5, while its separate cloud-streaming mode requires PlayStation Plus Premium and an eligible PS5 title.
The practical distinction is native execution versus streaming. Native PC versions run on the computer and must be purchased separately. Remote Play sends video and audio from a PS5 to another screen while your controller input travels back to the console. Portal does not contain the hardware needed to run PS5 games by itself.
What works on each platform
| Platform | How PS5 games are accessed | Is a PS5 required? | Separate purchase? | Save compatibility | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC or Mac | PS Remote Play streaming, or a separate native PC release when Sony publishes one | Yes for Remote Play; no for a native PC release | Yes for a native PC version; Remote Play uses the copy installed on your PS5 | Console and PC versions are separate products; saves cannot currently be transferred between them | Owning the console version does not grant the PC version |
| PS4 | Remote Play from a PS5 in supported configurations | Yes | No additional game purchase for streaming a game you own on the PS5 | Gameplay and saves remain on the PS5 | Cannot run PS5-native games locally |
| PlayStation Portal | Remote Play from a PS5, plus cloud streaming for eligible PS5 games | Yes for Remote Play; no for eligible cloud titles | Remote Play uses your PS5 copy; cloud access requires an eligible title and PlayStation Plus Premium | Remote Play uses the PS5’s data; cloud saves and entitlements depend on the PlayStation service | Does not run games natively, cannot connect to a PS4 console, and does not currently cloud-stream PS4 or PS3 games |
“Exclusive” describes where a particular version is available, not a permanent promise that the game will never appear elsewhere. Sony can release a separate PC edition later, but that edition remains a distinct product.
Playing PS5 games on a PC
Option 1: Stream your PS5 with PS Remote Play
Remote Play is the answer if you already own a PS5 game and want to play it on a laptop or desktop without buying another copy. The game still runs on the PS5. The computer receives the resulting picture and sound, and your controller commands are sent back over the network.

- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player

- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
- Prepare the PS5. On the console, open the system settings and enable the Remote Play feature. The console must be available to accept a Remote Play connection.
- Install the official PS Remote Play app for Windows PC or Mac.
- Sign in with the PlayStation account associated with your console and follow the app’s pairing instructions.
- Connect a compatible controller to the computer. The app does not turn keyboard and mouse input into a universal replacement for a console controller.
- Select the PS5 in the app. After the connection is established, launch the game from the PS5 interface and play as if you were in front of the console.
Sony’s current guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for Remote Play sessions and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those figures are thresholds, not guarantees: Wi‑Fi interference, household traffic, distance to the console and the quality of the route between the computer and PS5 can still cause delay or image degradation.
Option 2: Buy a native PC version
Some PlayStation Studios games have Windows releases. A native port is a separate PC product, so purchasing the PS5 or PS4 console edition does not automatically unlock it. Check the specific game’s PC listing for its release status, system requirements and storefront entitlement before assuming that a console purchase carries over.
Native and console editions are also separate for saved progress. Sony states that saves cannot currently be transferred between the PC and console versions. You should therefore treat a PC playthrough and a PS5 playthrough as independent unless the game’s own documentation explicitly states otherwise.
Which PC route should you choose?
- Use Remote Play when you already own the game on PS5, want to avoid a second purchase and can keep the console available.
- Use a native PC release when you need the game to run without a PS5, want PC-specific settings or cannot rely on a streaming connection.
- Do not assume cross-buy or cross-save. Verify both separately for each title; the general Sony position is that the PC and console products are separate.
Can a PS4 play PS5 exclusives?
Local PS4 execution: no
A PS4 cannot install and run a game built for PS5 hardware. The PS4’s own processor, graphics hardware and operating environment do not become a PS5 by receiving an update. If a title has a genuine PS4 edition, that is a different version; a PS5-only edition is not locally compatible.
Using a PS4 as a Remote Play screen
A PS4 can be part of a Remote Play arrangement in supported configurations, with the PS5 doing the actual game processing. The game must be installed and playable on the PS5, and the PS4 is only displaying the stream and returning controller input.

- Enable Remote Play on the PS5 and make sure the console is available on the network.
- Use the supported Remote Play function on the PS4 and sign in with the account paired to the PS5.
- Choose the PS5 as the source console and wait for the connection.
- Start the PS5 game from the streamed PS5 interface.
This route does not create a PS4 copy of the game. If the PS5 is unavailable, disconnected or unable to maintain the session, the PS4 has no local version to fall back on.
Can PlayStation Portal play PS5 games by itself?
Remote Play mode: a PS5 is required
Portal is a dedicated device for streaming games installed on your PS5. It does not execute PS5 games natively, and it is not compatible with PS4 consoles. In ordinary use, the PS5 remains the source, so you need the console, the game installed or otherwise available there, a PlayStation account connection and a suitable broadband path.
- Enable Remote Play on the PS5.
- Connect Portal to a reliable Wi‑Fi network and sign in with the same PlayStation account used by the console.
- Select the PS5 shown by Portal and wait for the Remote Play session to start.
- Launch the installed game through the PS5 interface displayed on Portal.
The same connection guidance applies: Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed and 15 Mbps as the recommended speed for a better Remote Play experience. A fast internet plan cannot eliminate every problem if the local wireless network is congested or unstable.
Cloud-streaming mode: a separate path without your own PS5
Sony announced the official launch of Portal cloud streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium members on November 5, 2025. In this mode, eligible games run on Sony’s cloud infrastructure rather than on a PS5 in your home. Premium members can stream select digital PS5 games from their own library and games included in the catalog.
Eligibility is narrower than the phrase “PS5 cloud gaming” suggests:

- A PlayStation Plus Premium membership is required.
- Only select PS5 titles are eligible; availability varies by game and region.
- Sony’s launch announcement said thousands of PS5 games were supported at launch, but the exact catalog can change.
- PS4 and PS3 games are not currently streamable on Portal through this cloud feature.
- Cloud streaming does not turn Portal into a general-purpose console; it remains dependent on the service, account entitlements and broadband quality.
If you own a digital PS5 game, ownership alone does not guarantee cloud eligibility. The title must be one of the games Sony permits for Portal cloud streaming in your region, and your account must have the required Premium membership.
Native execution versus streaming
| Consideration | Native PC version | Remote Play | Portal cloud streaming |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | On the PC | On your PS5 | On Sony’s cloud servers |
| Home PS5 needed | No | Yes | No, if the title and region are eligible |
| Second game purchase | Usually yes; the PC edition is separate | No additional copy when streaming the game you own on PS5 | Not necessarily, but the title must be eligible and your account must have access |
| Subscription | Not inherently required by the platform | Not inherently required for the Remote Play connection | PlayStation Plus Premium required |
| Network dependence | Needed for downloads, updates and online features, but not for local rendering | Required for the entire session | Required for the entire session |
| Save relationship | Separate from the console version under Sony’s current guidance | Uses the PS5’s game and save data | Depends on the cloud service and the game’s supported account data |
Streaming can be convenient because it avoids a second purchase or a large PC installation, but every frame must travel through a network path. Native execution generally offers more predictable response because rendering happens on the device, while streaming quality depends on bandwidth, latency and congestion.
Requirements checklist before you start
- Identify the access method. Decide whether you need a native PC release, PS5 Remote Play or Portal cloud streaming.
- Confirm the source. Remote Play requires an available PS5; Portal cannot use a PS4 as its source.
- Check ownership and eligibility. A console purchase does not grant a PC purchase, and Portal cloud access is limited to selected PS5 titles.
- Use a compatible controller. PC Remote Play requires a controller supported by the app.
- Plan for network capacity. Treat 5 Mbps as Sony’s minimum and 15 Mbps as the recommended target for a better Remote Play experience.
- Set expectations for saves. Do not expect a PC save to appear on PS5 or vice versa unless the individual game explicitly supports that transfer.
Troubleshooting common access problems
The PC app cannot find the PS5
Confirm that Remote Play is enabled on the PS5, both devices use the intended PlayStation account and the console is reachable on the network. If discovery still fails, reconnect the devices to the network and repeat the app’s pairing process.
The stream is blurry or delayed
Compare your connection with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation, then reduce competing network traffic. Move the computer or Portal closer to the wireless access point, use a less congested connection where possible and test again. If the problem affects only one location, the local network is more likely to be the bottleneck than the game itself.
A PS4 user expects to start the game without a PS5
That is not supported for a PS5-native title. The PS4 can only display a stream generated by a PS5 in a supported Remote Play setup; it cannot install or render the PS5 version locally.

A Portal owner expects every PS5 game in the library to work in the cloud
Cloud streaming is title- and region-dependent and requires PlayStation Plus Premium. Check whether the specific digital PS5 game is listed as eligible. If it is not, the remaining Portal route is Remote Play from a PS5.
Quick Recap
The simplest buying and setup decision
- You own a PS5 and want another screen: choose PC Remote Play, PS4 Remote Play where supported, or Portal Remote Play. No second game copy is needed for the streamed session.
- You do not own a PS5 but want to play on a computer: look for a native PC release and budget for that separate edition.
- You do not own a PS5 and want a handheld-style experience: Portal can work only through eligible cloud streaming, which requires PlayStation Plus Premium and a supported PS5 title in your region.
- You own only a PS4: a PS5-exclusive game will not run locally. You need access to a PS5 for Remote Play or another officially supported platform version.
