Yes—usually. A PS5 with an integrated disc drive can generally install and play a disc-based game without an internet connection. Insert the disc, let the game data install, then launch it from Games home. Keep the disc inserted whenever you play. The important exceptions are first-time setup requirements, detachable-drive pairing, games that depend on servers, and content that is delivered as a download rather than stored on the disc.
The short answer: what works offline
For a PS5 that already has a working, integrated disc drive, the normal offline process is straightforward: install the game from its disc and start it from the console’s Games home. You do not need Wi-Fi simply to read the disc or play the portions of the game that are present on it. The disc acts as the license, so it must remain in the drive while you play.
That does not mean every disc release is a complete, self-contained offline product. A title can require a download for additional game data, an account sign-in, a server connection, or an online-only mode. Offline access also excludes patches that have not been installed, downloadable expansions, cloud features and online multiplayer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Integrated disc-drive PS5: Most games with playable data on the disc can be installed and played offline after setup.
- Detachable Disc Drive: Compatible PS5 Digital Edition slim and PS5 Pro consoles need an internet connection once to pair the drive with the console.
- PS5 Digital Edition without a drive: It cannot read physical game discs.
- Digital games: They must first be purchased, downloaded and licensed online; an eligible downloaded game can then work offline when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled.
What you need before disconnecting the console
A PS5 that can read the disc
The hardware must have an integrated Blu-ray drive, or you must have installed a compatible detachable Disc Drive. A standard PS5 Digital Edition has no disc reader, so inserting a physical PS5 game is not an option until a compatible drive is added.
#1 Best Overall
- From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this device.
- This product is only for PS5 Digital Edition consoles (CFI-2000 model group – slim) or PS5 Pro Consoles
- Drive will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs
- Internet connection is required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 Digital Edition Console upon setup.
Completed initial setup
Finish the console’s first-time setup while an internet connection is available. Apply any required system firmware update before planning an offline trip; a new or reset console may not be ready to authenticate hardware or run software until setup is complete.
A game with an offline-capable base
Check the game’s packaging and the publisher’s requirements. The safest candidates are disc releases whose single-player, playable base is on the disc. A label such as online-only, a required account, or a download requirement changes the answer for that title even though the console itself can operate offline.
Enough internal storage
Installing from a disc still copies game data to the PS5’s storage. If storage is tight, remove unused games or add a PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD that meets Sony’s current capacity, speed and heatsink requirements. Storage expansion does not remove an online requirement; it only provides room for installed data.

- Confirm the drive type. Verify that your console has an integrated drive, or complete the detachable-drive pairing described below while online.
- Complete system setup and updates. Sign in during initial setup and install any required PS5 system software update before disconnecting the network.
- Insert the game disc. Use the disc’s label orientation specified by the console. The PS5 begins copying the game data and displays a notification when the game is ready to play.
- Wait for installation to finish. “Ready to play” can appear before every file has copied. Let the installation complete if you want to avoid an interruption when entering a later level or mode.
- Launch from Games home. Start the installed game while still connected once, if possible. This gives you a chance to see an account, download or service requirement before you leave reliable internet access.
- Disconnect the network and retest. Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet, then launch the same game with the disc still inserted. Try the specific single-player or local mode you intend to use.
- Record what is unavailable. Expect the disc version’s installed base only. Note whether the game blocks its main menu, a particular mode, downloadable content or cloud saves; those observations are title-specific rather than a limitation of all PS5 discs.
Detachable Disc Drive: the one-time internet requirement
Compatible PS5 Digital Edition slim and PS5 Pro consoles can use a detachable Disc Drive, but Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive and console during setup. This is a one-time hardware-pairing step, not a requirement to keep the console online for every subsequent disc session.
- Attach the compatible Disc Drive to the supported PS5 model according to its installation instructions.
- Connect the console to the internet and complete the on-screen pairing process.
- Finish any pending console setup or firmware update while online.
- Insert a PS5 game disc and allow the game to install.
- After pairing and installation, disconnect the network and test the title’s offline mode. Leave the disc inserted for future launches.
If you have never paired the drive and are somewhere without internet access, physical games will not be usable on that console until the pairing step has been completed. Once pairing is complete, ordinary disc use does not require a constant connection.
Disc versus digital games offline
| Situation | Internet needed? | What can work offline? |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 with integrated drive and a disc game whose playable data is on the disc | Usually no after console setup | Installed base game and offline single-player or local modes; the disc must stay inserted |
| Compatible detachable Disc Drive being used for the first time | Yes, for initial pairing | After pairing, compatible disc games can be used offline subject to each title’s requirements |
| PS5 Digital Edition with no disc drive | Not applicable to physical discs | Cannot read PS5 or PS4 game discs |
| Digital game not yet downloaded | Yes | Nothing until purchase, download and licensing setup are complete |
| Eligible digital game fully downloaded with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled | Generally no for the downloaded purchase | Offline play can work; subscription entitlements still require an active PlayStation Plus subscription |
| Online-only game or mode | Yes | Unavailable without its required server or service |
A disc and a digital license therefore solve different problems. A disc supplies local game data and a physical license, while a digital purchase depends on download and account licensing. Enabling Console Sharing and Offline Play can let eligible downloaded purchases run offline, but it does not turn an online-only title into an offline one and does not remove the active-subscription requirement for subscription-based access.
What a disc does—and does not—contain
The base game may be playable from the disc
Sony’s standard workflow is to insert the disc and install game data from it. For many releases, that installation includes the content needed for offline single-player play. This is why a properly set-up disc-drive PS5 can function without Wi-Fi.
Additional downloads can still be required
Some releases put only part of the playable product on the disc or require a separate download for a substantial portion of the game. A mandatory download can be needed even when the box contains a physical disc. The packaging and publisher’s support page are the authoritative checks for that individual edition.

Patches are optional for access but important for fixes
Without internet, the console cannot retrieve updates or patches that are not already installed. The disc version remains available at its installed software version, but you will miss later bug fixes, balancing changes, accessibility improvements and compatibility updates.
DLC and server services are separate
Downloadable expansions, season content and other server-delivered additions cannot be obtained while offline. Cloud saves, account synchronization, leaderboards, live events and online multiplayer likewise require their respective network services. A local save on the console can still be used by an offline-capable game, but a cloud copy cannot be uploaded or downloaded without a connection.
PS4 discs and backward compatibility
PS5 models with a Blu-ray drive also support PS4 Blu-ray game discs under Sony’s backward-compatibility rules. The same practical limits apply: install the disc data first, keep the disc inserted, and do not expect online modes, patches or server-dependent features to function offline.

What will not work without internet
- First-time detachable-drive pairing: The compatible drive must be paired online before it can be used for ordinary disc play.
- Initial digital purchase and download: A game that is not already downloaded cannot be launched merely because you own it in an online store.
- Online multiplayer: Competitive and cooperative sessions that depend on game servers are unavailable offline.
- Online-only titles: If the publisher requires a live service to reach the game or its main mode, disconnecting the console prevents access.
- Uninstalled updates and patches: The console cannot fetch them without a network.
- Cloud features: Cloud saves, synchronized libraries, remote services and leaderboards need a connection.
- Undownloaded DLC: Add-ons not already installed cannot be retrieved offline.
Troubleshooting an offline disc that will not start
The console says an internet connection is required
First identify whether the message appears during hardware setup, game installation or launch. During setup, it may indicate that a detachable drive still needs pairing or that the console has not completed required firmware setup. At launch, it usually points to a title-specific account, download or server requirement. Reconnect once, read the exact publisher requirement for that edition, and do not assume another disc game will behave the same way.
The game installs but a mode is locked
Check whether that mode is multiplayer, live-service content, downloadable content or another server-backed feature. Test the game’s local or single-player mode separately. A locked online mode does not prove that the entire disc release is unusable offline.
The installation stops or storage is full
Verify available console storage and free space before retrying. Remove an unused installed game or move eligible data to suitable expanded storage, then reinsert the disc. The disc cannot be used as a substitute for the storage space needed to run the installed game.
The game works but behaves differently
Without its latest patch, the title is running the version available from the disc or the last update already installed. Missing fixes, balance changes and downloadable content can affect the experience. If you need the current version, reconnect and install updates before going offline again.

The console cannot read the disc
Make sure the disc is a supported PS5 or PS4 game disc, the drive is fully attached if it is detachable, and the disc is inserted in the correct orientation. A PS5 Digital Edition with no compatible drive will never read a physical game, regardless of network status.
Best preparation for an offline trip
- Use a console with an integrated drive, or pair the detachable drive before leaving home.
- Complete initial setup and install the latest available system software while connected.
- Install every disc game you plan to play and leave enough internal or compatible expanded storage.
- Launch each game once online, then test it with Wi-Fi and Ethernet disabled.
- Install desired patches and DLC in advance, understanding that these are optional additions rather than guaranteed disc content.
- Open the intended single-player or local mode during the offline test; reaching the title screen alone is not proof that every mode works.
- Keep each game’s disc with the console because the license check requires it to remain inserted.
- For digital games, enable Console Sharing and Offline Play and verify that the purchase is fully downloaded. Keep an active PlayStation Plus subscription if the game is accessed through a subscription entitlement.
Choosing hardware for an offline library
When the disc-drive PS5 is the better fit
Choose a PS5 model with an integrated Blu-ray drive if you expect to buy or borrow physical PS5 and PS4 games, travel with a shelf of discs, or avoid downloading every base game before a trip. Physical ownership does not guarantee complete offline functionality, but it provides the local installation source for games designed to run from disc.
When adding a detachable drive makes sense
An add-on Disc Drive is the relevant route for owners of compatible PS5 Digital Edition slim and PS5 Pro consoles who want physical games. Plan the purchase and installation around the required one-time internet pairing. After that setup, the drive can support offline disc use, subject to the game itself.

Disc games are installed to console storage, so a large offline library can consume space quickly. A compatible M.2 NVMe SSD can expand capacity when it meets Sony’s current compatibility and heatsink specifications. It does not supply missing game content or bypass online authentication, but it can prevent repeated uninstall-and-reinstall cycles.
Bottom line
A PS5 with a functioning disc drive can usually play a disc game without internet after setup: install the game, keep the disc inserted and use its offline-capable modes. The main exceptions are the one-time online pairing required by a compatible detachable drive, games whose content or authentication is server-dependent, and features such as patches, DLC, cloud saves and online multiplayer. Treat offline support as a property of the specific game edition, not a blanket promise made by every PS5 disc.
