Short answer: You cannot play PS4 games on an Android phone or tablet without access to a PlayStation console through Sony’s supported method. PS Remote Play streams a game that is running on a PS4 or PS5; Android is the remote screen and input device, not a replacement for the console. A separate controller is optional, however: compatible Android devices can show on-screen touch controls.
Sony’s current US Remote Play requirements page says, “A PS4 or PS5 console is required to stream your games to another devices.” The page does not display a publication year; the requirements below reflect the page verified on October 13, 2026. The two conditions are different
The wording “without a PS4 or controller” combines two separate questions:
- Can Android replace the PS4? No. Remote Play depends on a PS4 or PS5 that runs the game and sends the video and audio to your Android device.
- Can Android replace a physical controller? Sometimes. Android 9 and later can use on-screen controls in the Remote Play app, so a DUALSHOCK 4 or DualSense is not mandatory.
Removing the controller is therefore possible within the supported setup; removing the console is not. A phone, tablet, controller grip, faster router or other accessory cannot supply the missing PlayStation hardware that actually executes the game.

How PS Remote Play actually works
Remote Play is a streaming connection between a PlayStation console and another device. The PS4 or PS5 remains the host: it has the installed or inserted game, performs the game’s processing and sends an interactive video stream over a network. The Android app displays that stream and sends your touch or controller input back to the console.
That architecture explains the hard limit. If there is no PS4 or PS5 available, there is no supported host for the Android app to contact. Installing the free app does not download a PS4 copy of a game to the phone, convert Android into a PlayStation, or provide a standalone library.

It also explains why network quality matters even when the phone is powerful. Remote Play is not a local Android game; controls, video and audio travel between the device and console. Sony lists a minimum internet speed of 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those are published guidance values, not a performance guarantee: congestion, wireless signal quality, distance and other network conditions can still affect responsiveness and image quality.
What you need for the supported setup
Sony’s requirements page identifies the following core items:
- A compatible Android smartphone or tablet.
- The free PS Remote Play app.
- A PlayStation account.
- A PS4 or PS5 console connected to broadband.
- A game that is compatible with Remote Play.
- An internet connection meeting Sony’s bandwidth guidance.
A separate controller is optional if your Android device supports the app’s touch controls. Mobile data can be used, but Sony warns that Remote Play may consume your allowance; the practical result depends on your carrier plan and network conditions.

These thresholds come from Sony’s compatibility page at https://www.playstation.com/en-us/remote-play/. Sony advises checking the Android device manufacturer for controller-driver compatibility, so an Android version number alone does not guarantee that every Bluetooth controller feature will work.
Step-by-step: use Android without a separate controller
The sequence below describes the supported arrangement without assuming a particular phone brand or app interface version. Labels can change, so use the current instructions shown in Sony’s app and guide.

- Confirm the console requirement. Have access to a PS4 or PS5 that is connected to broadband. If you do not have access to either console, stop here: the supported Remote Play route cannot start.
- Check the Android version. On the phone or tablet, open its system information and verify Android 9 or later if you intend to use touch controls. Older versions do not meet Sony’s published threshold for on-screen controls.
- Install PS Remote Play. Download the free PS Remote Play app from the official mobile-app distribution channel for your device. Avoid treating the app as a game download; its role is to connect to the console.
- Sign in with your PlayStation account. Use the account associated with the console and game access. The app’s sign-in and pairing screens determine the exact prompts for your device.
- Prepare the console for Remote Play. The PS4 or PS5 must be connected to broadband and configured according to Sony’s current Remote Play instructions. The console is the machine that runs the game, so it must be available for the app to find.
- Start the connection from the app. Select the console when the app presents it and follow the on-screen pairing process. If the app cannot locate it, check the console’s network connection and account details before changing phone settings.
- Choose touch controls. When the remote session opens on Android 9 or later, use the virtual buttons and controls shown over the game stream. No DUALSHOCK 4 or DualSense is required for this input method.
- Test the connection before a long session. Begin with a short play period on the same network and note delay, dropped video or disconnections. If performance is poor, troubleshoot the network rather than expecting a phone accessory to fix the missing-console problem.
The exact console menus and app screens are version-dependent, so Sony’s official guide remains the authority for current setup labels and account requirements.
Is touch control practical for every PS4 game?
Touch controls satisfy the hardware requirement for input, but they do not make every game equally comfortable. A virtual overlay has no physical travel or tactile separation between buttons. Games with frequent simultaneous inputs, precise aiming, long-press actions or complex layouts may be harder to operate on a small screen than with a physical controller.

If a title is technically available through Remote Play, you can try the on-screen controls first. A supported DUALSHOCK 4 or DualSense can be added later when your Android version and device drivers meet Sony’s requirements. Buying a controller may improve comfort, but it does not change the need for the PS4 or PS5 that hosts the session.

Games and features that can be excluded
Not every PlayStation experience can be sent through Remote Play. Sony identifies exclusions for:
- Games that require a PlayStation VR headset.
- Games that require additional peripherals beyond the listed supported controllers.
- Games that must be streamed through a PlayStation Plus Premium membership.
These restrictions are separate from Android compatibility. A phone running Android 9 or later can meet the touch-control threshold while a particular game still cannot be used in Remote Play because it depends on excluded hardware or a different streaming service. Check the title’s requirements and Sony’s current compatibility notes before assuming that any PS4 game will work.
Network requirements and what the numbers mean
Sony publishes 5 Mbps as the minimum internet speed and 15 Mbps as its recommendation for a better Remote Play experience. The figures describe the connection guidance for the service; they are not a promise that every game will feel responsive at those speeds.
Use the numbers as a starting check:
- Below 5 Mbps, you are below Sony’s stated minimum and should expect difficulty maintaining a session.
- At or above 5 Mbps, the service may connect, but wireless interference, congestion and variable latency can still produce delay or image problems.
- At around 15 Mbps or higher, you meet Sony’s recommendation for a better experience, but actual quality still depends on the complete network path between Android and the console.
When using cellular data, monitor the allowance on your mobile plan. A connection that is fast enough can still become expensive or unavailable if the allowance is exhausted. Sony’s figures are guidance published on its undated US requirements page, verified October 13, 2026, rather than an independent benchmark.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The app says no console is available
- Confirm that a PS4 or PS5 is actually available; an Android phone cannot create a console session by itself.
- Verify that the console is connected to broadband and that the app is using the intended PlayStation account.
- Recheck the console’s Remote Play configuration using Sony’s current instructions.
The session connects but controls do not appear
- Check that the Android device is running Android 9 or later, Sony’s threshold for on-screen controls.
- Look for the app’s control-overlay option while the session is active and follow the current on-screen prompts.
- If you are trying to use a physical controller instead, verify the Android threshold and manufacturer driver compatibility rather than assuming Bluetooth support is universal.
Video is blurry, delayed or repeatedly disconnects
- Compare the connection with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation.
- Try a more stable network environment and reduce competing traffic where possible.
- Test again on the same network before concluding that the Android phone is incompatible; Remote Play quality varies with network conditions.
A particular game will not start
Check whether it requires VR hardware, an additional peripheral or PlayStation Plus Premium streaming. Sony excludes those categories from the Remote Play support described on its requirements page.
What you cannot substitute for the console
Several tempting interpretations are incorrect:
- A newer Android phone: More processing power does not turn the phone into a PS4. The official method still streams from a console.
- A controller accessory: A grip or Bluetooth pad can change comfort or input, but it cannot host the game.
- A faster internet plan: Bandwidth can help a Remote Play session, but it cannot provide the PS4/PS5 required to run that session.
- The Remote Play app alone: The app is an endpoint for a console stream, not a native PS4 emulator or game marketplace.
If your non-negotiable condition is “no PS4 or PS5 at all,” Sony’s supported Remote Play method does not meet the request. If the condition is only “no separate controller,” an Android 9-or-later device with touch controls can meet it, provided the console, account, game and network requirements are satisfied.
