Yes. The Steam PC release of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is playable on Steam Deck and on Linux through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer. It is a Windows game rather than a native Linux port, so the experience depends on Proton, Steam Input, display settings and your hardware. SteamDB currently marks it Playable and SteamOS: Compatible, with Proton Stable recommended. Its SteamOS test, dated 25 September 2026, reports successful operation, legible in-game text and a functional default controller configuration, while also noting manual keyboard use, compatibility warnings and display-resolution limitations.
The short answer: Proton makes the Windows release playable
Steam identifies Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time as a Windows PC release with legacy Windows requirements. There is no native Linux edition listed in the compatibility evidence. On a Steam Deck, SteamOS runs the Windows build through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux-based SteamOS. A Linux desktop uses the same basic approach: install the Steam game and let Proton provide the Windows compatibility environment.
This means “playable” does not mean “native” or “guaranteed to need no setup.” Valve’s definition allows a game to require manual tweaking, such as choosing a community controller layout or using the touchscreen for a launcher. That description matches the title-specific notes recorded by SteamDB. The game starts and its core functions are accessible, but you may need to adjust input, invoke the on-screen keyboard yourself or change display settings.
What the current compatibility evidence says
SteamDB’s current record gives the clearest title-specific picture available:

- Test date: 25 September 2026. This is the date of the compatibility check, not a player-count, benchmark or guaranteed success-rate statistic.
In practical terms, the listing supports buying and installing the game for a Deck or Linux system, provided you are comfortable with occasional compatibility-layer adjustments. It does not establish that every distribution, graphics driver, monitor or controller will behave identically.
How to install it on Steam Deck
Steam Deck is the least complicated route because SteamOS and Proton are integrated into the device’s normal game mode. Use the standard Steam installation first; only force a different runtime if the default behavior gives you a problem.
- Install the game. In Gaming Mode, open your Steam Library, select Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, choose Install, select a storage location and wait for the download to finish.
- Launch without overrides. Start the game once using the default compatibility setting. This establishes whether the current SteamOS and Proton combination already handles the title correctly.
- Check the controller layout. Open the game’s controller settings and confirm that the default layout supplies movement, camera, action and menu controls. SteamDB reports the default configuration as functional, so do not replace it pre-emptively.
- Use Proton Stable if a runtime must be selected. From the Library, highlight the game, open the gear icon, choose Properties, open Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select Proton Stable.
- Handle text entry manually. If a launcher, name field or other prompt requires typing, invoke the Steam on-screen keyboard yourself. The title’s compatibility record specifically warns that automatic keyboard invocation may not occur.
- Correct the picture if needed. If the image is stretched, surrounded by unused space or otherwise fails to fit the Deck screen, inspect the game’s display and aspect-ratio options and the Deck’s performance/display settings. The game does not support the Deck’s native display resolution, so some compromise is expected.
A compatibility warning in Steam is not proof that the game cannot run. Valve’s Playable category explicitly includes games that need user intervention. Treat the warning as a prompt to verify the current Proton selection and controls rather than as an automatic failure.

Linux desktop play uses Proton in Steam, but your distribution, graphics driver, desktop session, monitor and controller add variables that do not exist on a fixed Steam Deck configuration. Valve describes SteamOS as Linux-based and Proton-enabled; the same compatibility-layer model applies to a conventional Linux installation.

- Install Steam for your distribution. Use the package format supported by your Linux distribution and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Install the Windows game from your Library. Steam downloads the PC release; Proton supplies the Windows runtime when you launch it.
- Enable Steam Play/Proton. In Steam’s settings, open the compatibility or Steam Play section and allow Proton for supported titles. If Steam asks whether to enable a compatibility tool for this game, accept it.
- Start with Proton Stable. This is the runtime SteamDB currently recommends for the title. Avoid changing several variables at once, because doing so makes it difficult to identify whether a launch or input problem came from Proton, a driver or a game setting.
- Configure input in Steam. If a gamepad is not mapped correctly, open the game’s controller settings, enable Steam Input where appropriate and try a community layout. Valve’s Playable guidance identifies community configurations as a normal form of manual tweaking.
- Adjust display settings. Select a resolution and aspect ratio that your monitor and the game handle cleanly. The Deck-specific native-resolution limitation may not reproduce exactly on a desktop, but the title is still a legacy Windows game and can expose scaling or widescreen quirks.
Results can differ between distributions, GPU drivers, Proton releases and hardware. A configuration that launches on one Linux desktop is evidence for that setup, not a universal guarantee for every kernel, driver stack or controller.
Which Proton version should you use?
Start with Proton Stable
Proton Stable is the sensible first choice because it is the runtime listed in SteamDB’s current configuration data. Leave Steam’s default selection in place when the game launches and controls work. There is no evidence here that a bleeding-edge or experimental runtime is required.
Change one variable at a time
If the game stops launching after a SteamOS update, a driver change or a Proton update, return to the game’s Properties > Compatibility page and test another installed Proton version. Record which version you used and whether the change affects launching, video, audio or controls. Changing Proton, display mode and controller layout simultaneously can hide the cause.
When another Proton version is useful
Trying another version is a troubleshooting step, not a recommendation that one unlisted release is universally better. Proton behavior can change as Valve updates SteamOS, drivers and compatibility components. If a different version fixes your specific machine, keep it selected for that game and revisit the setting after future updates.

Controller and keyboard problems
The controller works, but a button is wrong
SteamDB reports that the default controller configuration exposes all functionality, so first restore the default layout rather than assuming the game needs a custom profile. If a button still performs the wrong action, open Steam Input’s configuration for the game and choose a community layout. Test movement, camera control, attack, jump, pause and menu navigation before starting a long session.
The game does not detect your gamepad
Close the game, reconnect or re-pair the controller, then reopen its Steam controller settings. Verify that Steam sees the device before launching. On a Linux desktop, also consider whether another desktop or input service has claimed the controller. If Steam Input is enabled, test both the default layout and a community layout; the objective is to isolate detection from button mapping.
A text field will not accept input
Bring up the Steam on-screen keyboard manually when the game or its launcher asks for text. This is a documented caveat for the title’s SteamOS configuration, not evidence that the installation is broken. A physical keyboard can also be used on a desktop Linux system, but the game may still require the on-screen keyboard when running through the Deck interface.

Resolution, aspect ratio and display behavior
The SteamOS compatibility record warns that performance may be degraded because the game does not support Steam Deck’s native display resolution. This is a compatibility and scaling limitation, not a claim that the game is unplayable. The game can operate while rendering at a non-native mode, but the image may need adjustment and may not fill the screen in the way a modern Deck-native title does.

- Open the game’s video or display menu and test the available resolutions rather than forcing the Deck’s native value.
- Check the aspect-ratio option if characters or environments look stretched.
- If you use an external display, select a mode that the monitor accepts and compare fullscreen with windowed or borderless behavior when those choices are available.
- After changing a resolution, restart the game if menus or text do not redraw correctly.
Steam Support maintains community topics covering widescreen resolution, controller setup and bug fixes. Those discussions can help identify a current workaround when a display or input symptom appears after an update, but a community workaround should be evaluated against your own hardware and Proton version.
What to do when Steam shows a compatibility warning
A warning can appear even when the game is classified as Playable. Valve’s category is deliberately broader than “Verified”: it allows manual actions such as selecting a controller configuration or using a touchscreen launcher. For this title, the warning is consistent with the known keyboard, display and occasional controller-selection caveats.
- Confirm that the game is using Proton Stable or the last version that worked on your system.
- Launch once with the default controller configuration before installing custom layouts or launch options.
- If a prompt requires text, open the on-screen keyboard manually.
- Check resolution and aspect ratio if the game window appears cropped, stretched or unusually small.
- Search the current SteamDB entry and Steam community support topics for the exact symptom, including your SteamOS or distribution version and Proton version.
- If an update introduced the problem, test one alternate Proton version and keep the change only if it improves the specific fault.
These steps address the documented failure modes without implying that every warning has the same cause. A launch failure, a missing button and an incorrectly scaled image require different checks.

What “playable” does and does not promise
For this game, “Playable” is a useful practical signal: SteamDB reports successful SteamOS operation, legible text and access to all functionality with the default controller configuration. It is not a promise of native Linux support, perfect plug-and-play input or modern display handling. Valve’s own definition says a Playable game may require manual tweaking, which is why the title can be both compatible and occasionally inconvenient.

The 25 September 2026 SteamDB test date also matters. Compatibility data describes the tested software state at that time; SteamOS, Proton, drivers and community configurations continue to change. If your result differs, compare the runtime and input settings before concluding that the game is incompatible.
Should you choose Steam Deck or Linux for this game?
Choose Steam Deck when you want the most standardized Linux environment and a built-in controller. The title-specific record already covers the Deck’s default controls and identifies the main caveats: manual keyboard invocation, possible warnings and non-native display resolution.
Choose a Linux desktop when you need a larger monitor, a physical keyboard or hardware that is more powerful than a handheld. You gain more flexibility in drivers, display modes and controller choices, but you also inherit more variables. Proton Stable remains the correct starting point in either case.
