Yes. Pokémon TCG Pocket is free to start and playable without spending money. Every player can open two booster packs each day at no cost, collect digital cards, build decks and use the app’s battle features. Purchases such as Poké Gold and the Premium Pass can shorten waits or add benefits, but they are not required for basic access.
What “free to play” means in Pokémon TCG Pocket
The official Pokémon TCG Pocket site describes the app as “Free-to-start; optional in-game purchases available.” It also states: “In this game, you will be able to open two booster packs every day at no cost.” Pokémon Support’s Gameplay FAQ, updated July 30, 2026, gives the same practical answer: “The game is free to start. There are optional in-app purchases.”
That means you can install the mobile app, open packs, collect cards, assemble decks and battle without entering payment information. Spending money changes the pace or range of activity rather than unlocking the fundamental game. A player who never buys anything still has access to the core collecting and battle loop, subject to the app’s daily timers, missions and available event rewards.
Pocket is a digital card game, not a requirement to own physical Pokémon Trading Card Game cards. Its rules also differ from the physical Pokémon TCG, so experience with the tabletop game does not mean every rule or card interaction will work identically in the app.

How many free packs do you get each day?
Each account receives two booster-pack openings per day at no cost. Those packs contain digital cards, including nostalgic artwork and cards that are exclusive to Pokémon TCG Pocket. The two-pack allowance is the central free-to-play collection mechanism: you return regularly, use the available openings and gradually expand your card pool.
The allowance is governed by the app’s daily cycle rather than your local midnight. Pokémon Support says, “The date changes at 6:00 a.m. (UTC).” In practice, a new daily date and its associated daily availability begin at that UTC reset. A player in another time zone should convert 6:00 a.m. UTC to local time when planning pack openings or missions.
Daily missions can be claimed once per day. Rewards that have an availability period can expire when that period ends, so a free player should check the mission and event screens before the reset instead of assuming every unclaimed reward remains available indefinitely.

Collect cards and build decks
The free pack cycle supplies cards for collection and deck construction. You can organize the cards you obtain, select legal cards for a deck and refine that deck as additional packs and rewards arrive. The official support material does not promise that a free account will obtain every card quickly; it establishes access to the collection system, not a guaranteed completion schedule.
Use battle features
Free players can use Pocket’s battle features. Battles take place under Pocket’s own rules, which are different from the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game. Treat the mobile app as its own rules environment rather than as a full, rules-identical simulator of tabletop play.
Earn rewards through normal play
Besides the daily pack openings, non-paying players rely on daily missions, events and other in-app rewards. These sources can provide additional progress, but their exact availability and expiration rules are controlled inside the app. Read each mission or event’s time window so that a reward is not lost by waiting past its deadline.

What Poké Gold changes
Poké Gold is optional in-game currency. Pokémon Support lists several uses:
- Shortening the waiting time to open packs.
- Shortening Wonder Pick waiting periods.
- Restoring an expired Wonder Pick.
- Participating in some solo event battles when event stamina is insufficient.
These functions provide acceleration or extra access. They do not turn the basic game into a paid-only product. If you never purchase Poké Gold, you continue with the normal free timers, daily allowance and rewards; you simply do not use currency to reduce a wait, restore an expired Wonder Pick or cover insufficient stamina in the situations listed above.
Is the Premium Pass required?
No. The Premium Pass is not a prerequisite for installing Pocket, opening the two daily free packs, collecting cards or using the ordinary battle features. Pokémon Support defines it as “a paid service that allows you to receive several in-game benefits for a set monthly fee.”
A pass can improve convenience or provide additional benefits, but a player who declines it remains able to play. The meaningful free-to-play trade-off is therefore speed and breadth versus recurring cost: a subscriber may receive more benefits or progress more quickly, while a non-subscriber follows the free daily cycle and waits for ordinary rewards.

How the trial works
A first-time subscriber can use a 14-day no-cost trial once per Apple Account or once per Google Account. The trial is tied to the relevant store account, not an unlimited offer that can be restarted repeatedly on the same account.

When charges begin
When the 14-day period ends, automatic billing begins unless automatic renewal is canceled at least 24 hours before the trial ends. The pass plan itself lasts one month. Check the subscription screen for the exact renewal date shown for your account rather than relying on the day you installed the app.

What does not cancel it
Uninstalling Pokémon TCG Pocket does not cancel the Premium Pass. Cancellation must be completed through the subscription controls for the Apple Account or Google Account that started the trial or paid plan. Removing the app only removes the software from the device; it does not change the store subscription.

The table separates established mechanics from assumptions. The official material does not state that Premium Pass guarantees a particular number of packs, a complete expansion or a specific win-rate advantage.
Can a free player complete every collection?
No authoritative source reviewed for this guide publishes a guaranteed number of days to complete a collection without spending. Completion depends on the cards you obtain, the expansion involved, the missions and events available during the period and how consistently you use the daily allowance. Any fixed timeline would therefore be speculative.

A practical no-spend routine
- Open both daily packs. Do this after the 6:00 a.m. UTC reset has occurred for the new date.
- Review daily missions. Claim missions once per day and note any reward with an expiration window.
- Check active events. Read the event end time and stamina requirements before committing to a battle.
- Use Wonder Pick deliberately. Free play does not provide paid wait reductions or expired-pick restoration, so avoid assuming that an unfinished pick will remain available forever.
- Spend Pack Points by expansion. Save points for a card in the expansion that generated them, because the exchange is expansion-specific.
- Set expectations around pace. Treat the daily allowance as steady progress, not as a promise of a complete collection by a particular date.
Daily reset and missed rewards
The UTC reset is especially important for players whose local calendar changes at a different hour. The app’s “date” changes at 6:00 a.m. UTC, and daily missions can be claimed once per day. If a mission or event lists a separate availability period, that period controls whether its reward can still be collected. Missing a reset does not create a new paid requirement; it can simply mean that a time-limited reward is no longer claimable.

Pokémon TCG Pocket is available on iOS and Android. Pokémon Support recommends:

Meeting those specifications does not guarantee that the app will work on every device. Hardware variants, operating-system changes and manufacturer software can still affect compatibility. If the app cannot install or run, verify the operating system, 64-bit capability, Vulkan support and available memory before concluding that payment is required; purchasing Poké Gold or a Premium Pass will not resolve an unsupported-device problem.

Confusing the free daily allowance with unlimited openings
The no-cost benefit is two booster-pack openings per day, not unlimited packs. Additional activity may involve waiting, missions, events or optional currency.
Assuming the trial is automatically harmless
The Premium Pass trial is free for 14 days for an eligible first-time subscriber, but it can convert to paid renewal. Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends if you do not want that renewal.
Deleting the app instead of canceling
Uninstalling removes the app but leaves the Apple or Google subscription active. Use the store’s subscription-management controls to cancel.
Expecting Pack Points to work across expansions
Points do not expire, but they remain tied to the expansion in which they were earned. Saving them is useful only if the target card belongs to that same expansion.

Using the physical game as a rules reference
Pocket’s rules differ from those of the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game. A strategy or interaction that is legal on a tabletop may not map directly to the mobile app.

What happens if you never buy anything?
Your account remains playable through the free systems: two daily booster-pack openings, available missions, events, battles and other in-app rewards. You will not have Poké Gold available to shorten listed waits, restore an expired Wonder Pick or cover insufficient event stamina, and you will not receive Premium Pass benefits. In exchange, you avoid subscription and currency charges while accepting a slower, timer-driven collection pace.
That is the complete financial trade-off established by the official information: paying is optional, while time and consistency are the main resources for a non-paying player. Because no official source gives a fixed free-completion schedule, judge the experience by whether the daily pace and available rewards meet your own collection goals.
