Short answer: the original Game Boy versions of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue are not announced for Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 Nintendo Classics as of October 18, 2026. The official modern-portable option is a Nintendo 3DS that already has the games purchased through Virtual Console. New 3DS purchases ended in 2023, so you cannot buy them there today.
Switch and Switch 2 do offer Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen, released as standalone digital remakes on February 28, 2026. They are substantially related to Red and Blue, but they are not the original Game Boy software.
What you can play today
There are four materially different ways to play a Red-and-Blue-era Pokémon game. Only two provide the original games exactly: an already-owned Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console copy or authentic Game Boy cartridges. Switch and Switch 2 currently provide the remakes, not the original binaries.

| Route | Original Red/Blue? | Availability on October 18, 2026 | Portability | Connectivity and features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console | Yes | New purchases closed March 27, 2023; previously purchased software can still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future. | Dedicated handheld | Original Game Boy software; Nintendo lists the titles as compatible with Poké Transporter. Do not assume current transfer or online functionality without checking the latest service status. |
| Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 Nintendo Classics | No announcement | Nintendo’s current FAQ does not announce the original Red or Blue in the Classics catalog. | Console, handheld mode, or tabletop mode | Catalog availability depends on Nintendo’s future announcements and the applicable subscription. |
| Switch or Switch 2 FireRed/LeafGreen | No; these are remakes | Standalone digital software released February 28, 2026. | Console, handheld mode, or tabletop mode | Game Boy Advance-era mechanics and local wireless trading and battling; online play is not supported. |
| Original Game Boy hardware and cartridge | Yes | Requires an authentic cartridge and working hardware. Used-market condition and availability vary. | Portable, but hardware is older and condition-dependent | Original hardware behavior and cartridge saves; no modern online service. |
The practical choice depends on four questions: do you need the original code, can you legally access a copy now, how important is modern portability, and do you need trading or battling features?

Nintendo 3DS: the official way to play the original games on a recent handheld
What the 3DS version is
Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue were released as Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console software. They are the original Game Boy games presented on a later handheld, rather than remakes with redesigned graphics or a different generation of mechanics. Nintendo’s product documentation lists both titles as 3DS software compatible with Poké Transporter.
Why you cannot buy them there now
Nintendo stopped accepting new purchases in the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time on March 27, 2023. A used 3DS listing that says “Red and Blue included” therefore is not a normal new digital purchase: the software must already be associated with that console or the Nintendo account that owns it. Treat any listing without proof of ownership as a hardware-only sale.
How redownloads work for an existing owner
Nintendo says previously purchased games and downloadable content can still be redownloaded, and software updates can still be received, for the foreseeable future. To use that allowance:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Start the same Nintendo 3DS and account that originally purchased the Virtual Console title, or use a system transfer that preserved the purchase entitlement.
- Open Nintendo eShop and go to the account’s redownloadable-software list. Menu wording can vary by region and system software.
- Find Pokémon Red or Pokémon Blue and choose the redownload option.
- After installation, launch the game from the HOME Menu. The game itself is playable offline.
If the title is absent, the most likely causes are a different account, an incomplete system transfer, or a listing that never included the game. Nintendo’s post-closure policy does not create a new entitlement for a buyer who only purchased a second-hand console.

Online-service limitations
Nintendo ended online play and other online communication functions for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS software on April 8, 2024. That date is separate from the eShop purchase shutdown. Redownload support and the ability to launch an already-owned game do not mean every network-dependent feature remains available. In particular, do not promise that a current Pokémon transfer service will accept a Red or Blue save simply because Nintendo once documented Poké Transporter compatibility; verify the service’s present status before relying on it.
Switch and Switch 2: what Nintendo has and has not announced
The original games are not in the announced Nintendo Classics lineup
Nintendo’s current support FAQ lists the Pokémon software available through Nintendo Classics and states, “We have nothing to announce regarding any other potential titles.” That wording means the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue are not announced for Switch or Switch 2 Nintendo Classics as of October 18, 2026. It is not a permanent statement that they can never arrive; it is the current catalog position.
A Nintendo Switch Online subscription consequently does not give you access to the original Red and Blue today. Do not confuse other Pokémon games in a Classics catalog with an announcement for these two Game Boy releases.

They retell the Kanto adventure in the Game Boy Advance remake format. That brings updated presentation and Game Boy Advance-era systems, so the games may feel familiar while differing from the original versions in mechanics, interface, available features, and technical behavior. Calling them “the original Red and Blue” is inaccurate.
Purchase and play requirements
Nintendo says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not needed to purchase or play these releases. They are purchased as standalone eShop software. Nintendo also says online play is not supported; local wireless trading and battling are supported. That combination matters if your goal is a modern two-system link experience: you can use nearby compatible Switch or Switch 2 systems, but you should not expect internet matchmaking or cloud-based battles supplied by the game.
Original Game Boy hardware and cartridges
An authentic Game Boy cartridge remains the most direct way to play the original code on original hardware. This route avoids the 3DS eShop question entirely, but it introduces different practical checks:
- Confirm that the cartridge is authentic rather than a reproduction or unverified flash board.
- Check that the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, or compatible hardware reads cartridges reliably.
- Ask whether the seller has tested saving and loading; an old cartridge can appear to boot while having an unreliable save system.
- Expect condition, price, and availability to vary because this is a used-hardware market.
A cartridge is not automatically transferable to Switch, Switch 2, or a Nintendo account. It gives you the original game on compatible cartridge hardware, not a digital license for another platform.

Red and Blue versus FireRed and LeafGreen
The names describe related releases, not identical editions. Use this comparison when deciding whether a remake meets your goal.
| Question | Original Red/Blue | FireRed/LeafGreen |
|---|---|---|
| Original Game Boy code? | Yes | No; remake software |
| Modern Switch or Switch 2 release? | Not announced for Nintendo Classics | Yes, digital standalone releases from February 28, 2026 |
| Visual and technical presentation | Game Boy-era presentation and limitations | Game Boy Advance-era presentation and systems |
| Switch Online membership required? | Not applicable because the games are not announced there | No |
| Internet play? | Original 3DS online functions are affected by the April 8, 2024 service shutdown | Not supported |
| Nearby trading and battling | Use depends on the hardware and version of the game | Supported through local wireless |
Choose the original releases if historical accuracy, the Game Boy presentation, or exact original behavior is the priority. Choose FireRed or LeafGreen if you want to play the Kanto story on current Nintendo hardware and prefer the remake’s later-generation systems.

You want the exact original games and already own them
Use the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console copy tied to the purchasing account. Redownload it before assuming a second-hand console includes a valid license, and keep in mind that Nintendo’s continued redownload policy is described as lasting “for the foreseeable future,” not forever.

You want to play on a Switch or Switch 2 now
Buy FireRed or LeafGreen as standalone digital software, understanding that they are remakes. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required, and the games support local wireless rather than online play.
You want to wait for an original-game release
Monitor Nintendo’s own Nintendo Classics announcements and support pages. The current FAQ makes no announcement for Red or Blue, so any claim that they are already coming to Switch or Switch 2 is speculation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- “Red and Blue are on Switch Online.” The original games are not announced in the current Nintendo Classics information.
- “FireRed and LeafGreen are ports.” They are remakes with Game Boy Advance-era features.
- “A used 3DS listing includes the games.” Verify that the software is legally purchased and remains associated with the included system or account.
- “The eShop closure means owned games cannot be downloaded.” Nintendo says redownloads and updates remain possible for the foreseeable future, although that policy does not reopen purchases.
- “Local wireless means online multiplayer.” For the Switch and Switch 2 remake releases, Nintendo specifically says online play is not supported.
- “Poké Transporter compatibility guarantees a current transfer path.” Historical compatibility documentation is not a guarantee that every related network service is available today.
Bottom line
As of October 18, 2026, a Nintendo 3DS with a legitimately purchased Virtual Console copy is the most practical official handheld route to the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. New 3DS purchases are closed, and Nintendo has not announced the original games for Switch or Switch 2 Nintendo Classics. For current Nintendo hardware, FireRed and LeafGreen are the available alternatives—but they are remakes, offered as standalone digital software with local wireless features and no online play.
