Yes—but the two companies use different rules. PlayStation releases selected games on PC as separate Windows products, usually sold through Steam or Epic Games. Xbox releases more of its first-party lineup for Windows at or near the console launch and adds cross-buy, cross-save, Game Pass, cloud streaming and backward-compatibility programs.
That means a gaming PC can replace a console for many current releases, but not every PlayStation game is available on Windows, and buying a PlayStation version normally does not unlock its PC version. Xbox is more straightforward when a digital title carries the Xbox Play Anywhere badge.
What “first-party” means here
A first-party game is published or owned by the platform company or one of its studios. The important distinction for PC players is not ownership alone; it is the company’s release policy for each title. A game can be first-party and still be console-only, arrive on PC years later, or launch simultaneously on console and Windows.

Which PlayStation games can you play on PC?
PlayStation has a substantial but selective PC catalog. Sony’s current listings include The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Helldivers 2, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, Stellar Blade and Until Dawn, among other PlayStation Studios releases.

This is a catalog, not a guarantee that every PlayStation game will receive a port. Sony announces and sells each PC edition separately, so availability, launch date and edition contents must be checked on the current listing for the specific game. A sequel may be on PC while an older entry is not, and a remastered edition may have different PC requirements from the original console release.
Do you need to buy a PlayStation game twice?
Usually, yes. Sony treats the PC and PS4/PS5 versions as different products. Buying a game for a PlayStation console does not normally provide the Windows copy, and buying the PC copy does not provide a console license. If you want to play on both systems, check the two store listings and assume two purchases unless Sony explicitly says otherwise.
Can PlayStation saves transfer to PC?
Not at present for the PS4/PS5-to-PC path covered by Sony’s support guidance. A console save therefore should not be treated as portable when you purchase a PC edition. Some games may have their own account-based progression features, but those are title-specific and do not change Sony’s general rule that console and PC products use separate save environments.
Is a PS5 still necessary if you own a gaming PC?
It depends on the games and the timing you care about:

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- PC alone can be enough if the games you want are already in Sony’s PC catalog and you are comfortable waiting for a port when release timing differs.
- A PS5 remains useful for PlayStation titles that have no announced PC version, for playing on the console at launch when a port is later, and for keeping a console save separate from the PC edition.
- Both platforms make sense if you want early access to console releases and the PC advantages of higher settings, ultrawide displays, mod support where permitted, or mouse-and-keyboard play.
How PlayStation PC releases work in practice
1. Confirm that the exact edition has a Windows listing
Search for the game’s current PC product page rather than relying on a console box, trailer or older article. Verify that the listing is for Windows and note whether it is the standard, complete or remastered edition. Retailer availability can change, so check the live Steam or Epic Games entry before paying.
2. Check the hardware requirements
PC ports can expose more graphics options than their console counterparts and may require different storage, memory, processor or graphics capabilities. Read the developer’s minimum and recommended specifications for the edition you are buying. “Runs on PS5” is not a PC specification and cannot predict your frame rate or image quality.
3. Choose your input method
A controller is optional for games that support mouse and keyboard. Sony documents mouse-and-keyboard support for its PC software and wired use of a DualSense controller on PC. Wireless operation and features such as adaptive triggers or advanced haptics vary by title, connection method and software support, so do not assume every DualSense feature works in every game. A standard compatible controller or keyboard and mouse may provide a more consistent experience.
4. Install through the listed retailer
Install the game from the storefront shown on its current PC listing, then apply the game’s updates and follow any sign-in or permission prompts shown by that release. Keep enough free space for the installation and patches; the store’s requirement can be smaller than the final space needed during unpacking or an update.

Why Xbox is usually easier to play on PC
Xbox treats Windows as a regular part of its platform strategy. Many first-party games launch for Xbox and PC together, while others are available through the Xbox app, Windows Store, Steam, Game Pass or cloud gaming. The exact combination is title- and region-dependent, but the range of access routes is broader than a simple console-to-PC port schedule.
Xbox Play Anywhere: the clearest cross-buy rule
The Xbox Play Anywhere badge identifies a digital game that can be played on an Xbox console, a Windows 10/11 PC and supported gaming handhelds at no additional cost. Xbox’s definition says that when you own a digital Play Anywhere game through the Xbox Store or Windows Store, it is yours on those supported devices.
Play Anywhere is more than a second download. Supported titles carry your saves, add-ons and achievements between Xbox and Windows. Sign in with the account that owns the digital license, install the PC version from the eligible Xbox or Windows listing, and the synchronized data should follow you. The badge is the deciding evidence; do not infer cross-buy from a game’s publisher or from the fact that it appears in both stores.
Examples of simultaneous Xbox-and-PC releases
Xbox’s 2025 Developer_Direct presented DOOM: The Dark Ages, South of Midnight, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Ninja Gaiden 4 for Xbox and PC, with Play Anywhere support for the showcased games. Release plans and supported platforms can change, so confirm the current product page for the particular edition and region.

Game Pass and cloud access
Some Xbox games can be accessed through a PC Game Pass plan or streamed through Xbox cloud gaming instead of being purchased outright. Those are subscriptions or streaming services rather than permanent ownership. Availability, catalog inclusion, image quality, latency and commercial terms vary by country and can change when a game leaves a catalog. Check the current Xbox app or service page before treating a subscription as a long-term license.
Backward compatibility on PC
On July 22, 2026, Xbox announced an early-release backward-compatibility program for four original Xbox games on PC in supported regions. The announcement says eligible digital console licenses carry over and that the games are included with Game Pass. It is an expansion of Xbox’s PC strategy, not proof that the entire original Xbox library is available on Windows. Look for the specific supported title, region and license conditions.

Check the digital store page for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge. If it is present, the qualifying digital purchase covers Xbox, Windows 10/11 PC and supported handhelds, with cross-device saves and related entitlements. If the badge is absent, the game may still have a Windows version through the Xbox app or another storefront, but no universal cross-buy rule is established for non-Play Anywhere titles. Treat the PC listing as a separate purchase unless Xbox explicitly identifies the entitlement you own.

Where to buy and install each platform’s PC games
| Platform | Typical PC storefronts | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation | Steam or Epic Games | Exact PC edition, system requirements, release date and separate-purchase status |
| Xbox | Xbox app or Windows Store; some titles also list Steam versions | Play Anywhere badge, Game Pass availability, account used for the license and regional support |
Storefront choice can affect achievements, cloud saves, mod support and which launcher is required. Use the platform named on the current game page and keep your purchase account credentials available after installation.
A practical decision guide
Choose PC first when
- Your priority games already have official Windows versions.
- You prefer adjustable graphics, high-refresh monitors, ultrawide support or mouse-and-keyboard controls.
- You are comfortable checking requirements and waiting for a title-specific port.
Keep or buy a PlayStation console when
- A game you want has no announced PC edition.
- You want the earliest console release rather than a later PC launch.
- You need access to an existing console save, because Sony does not currently provide a general PS4/PS5-to-PC save transfer.
Choose Xbox plus PC integration when
- You value one digital purchase across Xbox and Windows and the game carries the Play Anywhere badge.
- You want synchronized saves, add-ons and achievements.
- You plan to use the Xbox app, Game Pass or cloud gaming alongside native PC installations.
Troubleshooting common problems
The game appears on console but not on your PC
Confirm that you are viewing the Windows edition, not a console-only listing. For PlayStation, a console purchase does not unlock the PC product. For Xbox, check the Play Anywhere badge and the account that owns the digital purchase; a game’s presence in both ecosystems does not by itself establish cross-buy.
Your Xbox save is missing on Windows
Verify that the game is Play Anywhere, that you installed the supported Windows edition, and that you signed in with the purchasing Xbox account. If any of those conditions is missing, synchronized saves may not apply.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Your DualSense controller works but advanced features do not
Use a wired connection first, update the game and controller software, and consult the individual title’s support notes. Sony documents wired PC support, while wireless operation and advanced effects vary by game.
Performance is worse than expected
Recheck the edition’s minimum and recommended specifications, update graphics drivers, close background applications and adjust resolution or quality settings. Console performance targets do not guarantee equivalent results on a PC with different hardware.
Bottom line for PC players
You can play many major PlayStation and Xbox first-party games on a gaming PC, but “available on console” does not mean “automatically available on Windows.” PlayStation access is a title-by-title port system with separate purchases and no general console-save transfer. Xbox offers a wider set of Windows paths, and the Play Anywhere badge is the reliable signal for one digital purchase with cross-device saves and entitlements. Before buying, check the exact PC listing, current regional availability, system requirements and, for Xbox, the Play Anywhere badge.
