No—not on the original PS5 Digital Edition by itself. That model has no optical drive, so it cannot read a physical PS5 or PS4 game disc. You can play digital purchases normally, or add Sony’s separately sold Disc Drive if you own a compatible slim Digital Edition. The model number matters: Sony identifies the detachable drive for slim CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups, while its setup guide uses a CFI-2000/7000 compatibility grouping. Check the label on your console before buying an accessory.
What “Digital Edition” means for physical games
Sony’s PlayStation FAQ states: “The PS5 Digital Edition console does not feature a disc drive.” The launch Digital Edition, introduced in 2020, has no Ultra HD Blu-ray mechanism, disc slot, or internal hardware for reading optical media. A physical PS5 game disc therefore cannot be inserted, authenticated, installed, or played on that console.
The limitation applies to more than PS5 games. Blu-ray PS4 game discs, movie Blu-rays, DVDs, and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs also need a working optical drive. A USB disc reader is not a workaround: the PS5 does not treat a generic external optical drive as a game-disc drive. Sony’s purpose-built detachable Disc Drive is the supported add-on for certain later slim consoles.

How to distinguish the original and slim Digital Editions
Do not rely on the console’s color or the words “Digital Edition” alone. Find the model number printed on the underside or rear label, on the original box, or in the system information screen. The detachable-drive product page names CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim model groups. Sony’s installation guide refers to compatible CFI-2000/7000 groupings, so the exact list can depend on the console and drive revision or region. If your number is not explicitly listed by Sony, do not assume the accessory will fit.

What the official detachable Disc Drive adds
When paired with a compatible slim Digital Edition, Sony’s Disc Drive provides the same basic media functions as a disc-equipped PS5. It can read:
- PS5 game discs
- Supported PS4 game discs
- 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs
- Standard Blu-ray discs
- DVDs
The accessory is separate hardware, not a software unlock. You must physically install it on the slim console, attach the correct cover and feet, and connect the console to the internet so the system can pair the drive during initial setup. Prices, stock, and retailer bundles change, so verify the current listing before purchasing.
How to install and pair the Disc Drive
Use Sony’s model-specific instructions and keep the console’s original parts. The general sequence is:

- Confirm compatibility. Check the CFI model printed on the console and match it with Sony’s current Disc Drive compatibility information. Do this before opening the accessory.
- Shut down completely. Turn off the PS5 rather than placing it in Rest Mode, then unplug the power cable and all other cables. Allow the console to cool if it has been running.
- Remove the slim console cover. Follow the guide’s orientation and release points; do not force the panel. The detachable drive is designed for the later slim chassis, not the original Digital Edition shell.
- Remove the short feet. The slim Digital Edition uses short feet when it is configured without a drive. Set them aside in a labeled bag.
- Align and click in the drive. Position Sony’s Disc Drive against the connector and mounting points, then press it into place until it is seated. Misalignment can damage the connector or prevent the cover from closing.
- Fit the supplied cover. Install the cover supplied with the drive, rather than reusing the drive-less panel. Attach the supplied long feet so the console sits level in its new configuration.
- Reconnect and power on. Reattach the cables and start the PS5. Keep the console connected to the internet while the system recognizes and pairs the drive.
- Test a supported disc. Insert a PS5, supported PS4, Blu-ray, DVD, or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc. If the console does not recognize the drive, turn it off and recheck seating, the cover, the model number, and the network connection.
Store the original cover and short feet. You need them if you later remove the drive or return the console to its drive-less configuration.
Playing physical PS5 games after the drive is installed
New PS5 disc games
Insert the game disc to install the game data. The console may download patches or additional content, but the disc remains the physical license and normally needs to be in the drive when you start the game. Removing the disc does not convert the purchase into a digital entitlement.
PS4 discs on a compatible Digital Edition
A supported PS4 Blu-ray disc works only after compatible disc hardware has been added. The PS5 reads the disc, installs the PS4 version, and may download updates. Sony reports that more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games were playable on PS5 in its 2020 backward-compatibility information from Sony Interactive Entertainment. That percentage describes game compatibility, not whether a Digital Edition can read a disc: a physical copy still requires a drive.

Digital PS4 purchases
Games bought digitally through your PlayStation account can be downloaded to any PS5 Digital Edition without an optical drive. The license is tied to the account, so there is no disc to insert. Storage space, downloads, updates, and any publisher-specific requirements still apply.

Physical-disc upgrades and saved data
Upgrading a PS4 disc to a PS5 version
Some PS4 games offer a PS5 upgrade, but Sony says the physical-disc route requires a PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. A launch Digital Edition cannot use a PS4 disc to claim that disc-based upgrade. A compatible slim Digital Edition must have the official Disc Drive installed before it can follow a physical-disc upgrade path. Whether an upgrade is free, paid, or unavailable is decided by the publisher and the specific game.
Save transfers
Do not assume that a save made in the PS4 version will automatically appear in the PS5 version. Sony identifies save transfer support as a developer decision, so it varies by title. Check the game maker’s instructions for cloud saves, USB transfer, or in-game migration before deleting the PS4 installation or moving to the PS5 edition.

Common questions and problems
“My Digital Edition has a flat side panel. Can I just add the drive?”
Only later slim Digital Edition consoles built for the detachable accessory have the required mounting points and removable drive-side cover. The original launch Digital Edition is not made compatible by removing its panel. Confirm the CFI number instead of judging by appearance.
“Can I use a USB Blu-ray or DVD drive?”
No supported game-disc path exists through a generic USB optical drive. The PS5’s game authentication and system firmware are designed for the internal drive or Sony’s detachable Disc Drive. Buying an unapproved USB reader will not add physical-game support.

The console must pair the detachable drive online during setup. This is an initial hardware-authorization step, not evidence that every disc must be streamed. Connect the PS5 to the internet before installation, install any requested system update, and retry pairing if the drive is not recognized.

“The disc is inserted, but the game will not start.”
- Verify that the disc is a supported PS5 or PS4 Blu-ray game disc; a CD or unsupported format will not work.
- Check that the Disc Drive is fully seated and that the correct supplied cover is installed.
- Confirm the console completed online pairing and that system software is current.
- Clean the disc and test another known-good disc to separate a media problem from a drive problem.
- For an upgrade, confirm that the game actually offers a PS5 version in your region and that the publisher permits the disc-based upgrade.
“Can I play a disc after removing the add-on drive?”
No. Physical games require the drive at the time the disc is read and authenticated. Removing it leaves the console able to launch digital licenses only.
Choosing between digital-only and disc-capable PS5 ownership
Stay with a Digital Edition if
- Your library is already digital and you do not buy or borrow discs.
- You are comfortable downloading every game and expansion.
- You do not need a physical-media player for movies.
Add the official Disc Drive if
- You own a compatible CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 slim Digital Edition.
- You have PS5 or PS4 discs you want to use without replacing them digitally.
- You want 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, or DVD playback from the console.
- You need the physical-disc route for a particular PS4-to-PS5 upgrade.
Choose a console with a built-in drive if
You are buying a PS5 and know you will regularly use physical media. A built-in-drive model avoids accessory installation and compatibility checks, although the appropriate model and current price depend on the market and date of purchase.
Before you buy or install: a practical checklist
- Read the CFI model number; do not assume every “Digital Edition” supports a drive.
- Match the number against Sony’s current Disc Drive compatibility page and setup guide.
- Budget for the accessory separately; it is not included with a Digital Edition console.
- Have a stable internet connection available for first-time pairing.
- Keep the original cover and short feet in case you remove the drive later.
- Confirm whether each PS4 game supports backward compatibility and whether its publisher offers a PS5 upgrade.
- Remember that physical ownership does not automatically provide a digital license or universal cross-save support.
Sony’s Disc Drive product page currently says, “Discs for games released before Jan 2028 can continue to be played on this console.” That statement concerns Sony’s stated physical-release policy and may be revised, so check the latest support information when making a long-term purchase decision.
