Yes. Game Boy Advance games downloaded through the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics application can run without Wi‑Fi on a Nintendo Switch. The account must have an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, and the console must complete an online membership check at least once every seven days. After a successful check, single-player play can continue offline until that seven-day window expires.
Internet-dependent features do not become offline features: online multiplayer, voice chat and other network functions still need an internet connection. For a trip, the practical rule is to download the application and games, verify the membership shortly before departure, and plan a connection before seven days have passed.
What “offline” means for GBA Nintendo Classics
Downloaded games support offline single-player play
Nintendo’s official Nintendo Classics FAQ states: “Games can be played while you are offline, but you must have an active membership and verify your membership every seven days by connecting online.” That covers the normal local experience: starting a downloaded GBA title, loading its save, playing, and saving again without a live connection.
The Switch does not need to remain connected while you are playing inside the valid verification window. Airplane mode, a train with no service, or a hotel room without working Wi‑Fi will not by itself stop an already verified game from launching.

Online features still require internet
Offline support applies to the game software and local play, not to Nintendo’s network services. Online multiplayer, voice chat and any other function that communicates with Nintendo or another player require internet access. If a title offers both local and online modes, only the local mode can be used without a connection, and local support varies by game.
Which subscription includes GBA games?
Expansion Pack is required
Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics is part of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The standard Nintendo Switch Online tier does not include the GBA library. Nintendo describes Expansion Pack members as having continuing access to the collection for as long as the membership remains active.

The requirement is tied to the Nintendo Account’s membership, not to owning a GBA cartridge, a Switch game card or a separate controller. Those physical products do not unlock Nintendo Classics access.
What happens to saves when access ends?
Nintendo says save data remains on the console. If the membership ends, you cannot access the classic games while the account is inactive, but the saves can be used again if you renew the appropriate membership. Do not interpret the lockout as deletion of your progress.

How the seven-day verification window works
It is a weekly check, not a daily connection
The published interval is seven days. Nintendo does not require the Switch to check in every day. Once the console has successfully verified an active Expansion Pack membership, it can be disconnected and used offline until that verification window runs out.
The safest interpretation is a rolling deadline: reconnect at least once during every seven-day period. Do not plan to rely on an exact timestamp at the edge of the deadline, because travel delays, a failed sign-in or unavailable Wi‑Fi could leave you unable to refresh access.
What the check actually requires
- The Switch must be able to reach the internet.
- The Nintendo Account used on the console must be signed in.
- That account must have an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- The Nintendo Classics application must be installed; games should be downloaded while online.
A successful check does not grant permanent ownership. It confirms the current membership for a limited period, which is why access can stop after a long disconnected stretch even when the game files are still stored on the console.

Prepare the Switch before going offline
Complete this procedure at home or another location with reliable internet. Doing it shortly before departure leaves the maximum part of the seven-day period available for the trip.

- Install the application. Download the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics application from the Switch eShop while the console is online.
- Confirm the account. Open the user profile that is linked to the Nintendo Account with the active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. If multiple users are on the console, verify which one has the entitlement.
- Download each game you expect to play. Open the GBA Nintendo Classics application and download the titles while connected. A title that has never been downloaded cannot be fetched after you lose internet access.
- Launch the service online. Start the application and, if prompted, allow it to check membership. Wait until the game library opens normally rather than disconnecting during a loading or account message.
- Test one game before leaving. With the application open, turn on airplane mode or otherwise disconnect Wi‑Fi, close and reopen the application, and start a game. This confirms that the files are present and the account has recently checked in.
- Pack a reconnection plan. Note that you will need internet before seven days elapse. A phone hotspot, station Wi‑Fi or hotel network can provide the check-in; you do not need to play online, only to let the console verify membership.
The application and game data must be stored on the console or an inserted microSD card that the Switch can read. If you remove the card, run out of storage or archive a title, the game may need a download before it can be played again.
Will GBA games work on a plane?
Usually, yes, provided the pre-flight setup succeeded and the flight ends before the seven-day verification window. After boarding, enable airplane mode and start the downloaded game. The absence of Wi‑Fi during the flight does not invalidate a recent check.

On a plane with paid onboard Wi‑Fi, service availability and network restrictions are controlled by the airline. The Switch still needs a connection that lets Nintendo complete its membership check; simply seeing a Wi‑Fi network does not guarantee that the check will succeed.
Offline, local wireless and online multiplayer are different
Single-player
Single-player GBA play is the straightforward offline case. Once the title is downloaded and the membership is verified, you can launch it without Wi‑Fi and use local save data normally.

Local wireless play
Some classic games may support a local multiplayer mode, but support is title-specific. Local wireless connects nearby consoles directly and is distinct from internet multiplayer. Where a particular GBA game exposes a local mode, follow that game’s on-screen requirements; the seven-day account check still applies to accessing the Nintendo Classics service.
Online multiplayer and voice chat
Online play routes through Nintendo’s network services and therefore needs internet access. The same is true of voice chat and other features that contact a server. Downloading a game in advance does not cache those network functions for later offline use.

The application asks you to connect
Reconnect the Switch and open the GBA Nintendo Classics application. Confirm that the Nintendo Account is signed in and that the account still shows an active Expansion Pack membership. Launch the application successfully online, then disconnect and try again. If more than seven days have passed since the last successful verification, the prompt is expected rather than a game fault.

While online, check that the title was downloaded rather than merely viewed in the catalog. Start the download and wait for it to finish. If the game was archived or its storage card is unavailable, restore the download before travelling.

The membership is the wrong tier or has expired
Base Nintendo Switch Online does not unlock GBA Nintendo Classics. An expired Expansion Pack membership also blocks access, even though the application and save files remain on the console. Renew the correct membership, then perform an online launch so the console can verify it.
A save appears unavailable
Check that you are using the same Switch user and Nintendo Account that created the save. Nintendo’s stated behavior is that save data stays on the console when membership access ends; renewing the membership restores access to the game and its existing local progress.
You can connect, but online features fail
Offline game access and online services are separate. A recent membership check may let a single-player title open, but multiplayer or voice chat still needs a working internet connection, compatible network settings and the game’s own online service.
Planning around the seven-day limit
For a trip with reliable internet
Verify immediately before departure, then schedule one brief reconnect during the trip before the seventh day. You can continue playing offline between check-ins. This is the least risky arrangement because a failed first connection leaves time to retry.
For a long disconnected period
Download and verify as late as possible, then count seven days from that successful check. If the entire period exceeds the window and no internet is available, access will eventually stop. Nintendo’s requirement means there is no supported permanent-offline mode for the subscription library.
For a family or shared console
Use the Switch user associated with the active Expansion Pack membership when launching the application. Before leaving, test the exact user profile that will play. This avoids confusing an installed application with entitlement on a different account.
