Yes—Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical cartridges and digital games released for the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s official wording is that “Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch system.” Compatibility is not guaranteed for every title, however: some games are unsupported or only partly compatible, so check Nintendo’s current title-by-title compatibility list before buying, downloading or assuming a feature will work.

You usually do not need to buy a game again just because you are using Switch 2. A compatible original game can run as the base version. Optional free updates and paid upgrade packs can improve selected games, while a Switch 2 Edition bundles the original game with its upgrade pack.

What “compatible” means on Switch 2

Compatibility applies to both formats sold for the original console:

  • Physical games: compatible Nintendo Switch game cards can be inserted into Switch 2 and played.
  • Digital games: compatible purchases made for Nintendo Switch are supported on Switch 2.

The important qualifier is “compatible.” Nintendo separates its library into compatible, partially compatible and unsupported software. A game may start normally but have a peripheral, mode or feature that does not work as it did on the original hardware. Because Nintendo’s list can change as software and system updates are released, use the live compatibility entry for the exact game rather than relying on a general statement that the entire Switch catalog works.

Compatibility is different from an upgrade

A compatible game and an upgraded game are not the same thing. Compatibility means the original release can be used on Switch 2. An upgrade changes the Switch 2 experience by adding improvements or content. Nintendo says upgrade-pack additions may include visual improvements, new features or additional game modes. Those additions are playable only on Switch 2.

Do you have to rebuy your Switch games?

Not normally. If you already own a compatible physical or digital Nintendo Switch game, the original release is the starting point on Switch 2. A paid upgrade pack is an optional purchase for selected titles, not a requirement for every compatible game.

Option What you receive Extra payment required? Where it works
Original Switch game The base physical or digital game you already own No new purchase solely for compatibility Switch 2, if Nintendo lists the title as compatible
Free update A publisher-provided improvement to the original game No charge for the update Switch 2 improvements apply where the title offers them
Paid upgrade pack Selected graphics, features or modes for the Switch 2 version Yes, for titles that offer one Upgrade-pack content can be played only on Switch 2
Switch 2 Edition The original Switch game bundled with its upgrade pack Purchased as the edition or obtained by adding the pack Includes the Switch 2-specific enhancements

The exact entitlement depends on the title and how you own it. Nintendo says owners of a physical or digital original game can buy its upgrade pack through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store or participating retailers. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack can include selected upgrade packs at no additional charge; inclusion is title-specific, so confirm eligibility for the game you mean.

How Switch 2 upgrade packs work

Free updates

A free update leaves the original Switch game as the base release and improves the Switch 2 experience where the publisher provides the update. The fact that a game receives a free update does not mean every game receives one, and it does not automatically include all content found in a paid upgrade pack.

Paid upgrade packs

Paid packs are available only for selected games. Their contents vary: one title might add higher-quality visuals, another might add a new feature, and another might add an additional mode. The pack is not a replacement copy of the original game; it extends the game you already own. The pack’s additions cannot be used on the original Switch.

Switch 2 Editions

Nintendo describes a Switch 2 Edition as a bundle that “includes the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack.” This is useful when purchasing a title for the first time because the base game and Switch 2 enhancements are packaged together. If you already own the original release, compare the cost of the separate upgrade pack with the edition before paying for another copy.

How to check a specific game before you switch consoles

  1. Identify your version. Note whether you own a physical game card or a digital purchase, and record the exact title and edition. Different releases of a similarly named game can have different compatibility information.
  2. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility entry. Look for the title in Nintendo’s official Switch 2 compatibility list. Read any notes about partial compatibility, required updates or features that do not work.
  3. Look for an upgrade designation. Determine whether the game has no upgrade, a free update, a paid upgrade pack or a Switch 2 Edition. Do not assume that a visual improvement is included merely because the base game launches.
  4. Check hardware-dependent features. If the game uses original Joy-Con hardware, a camera or another accessory, confirm that the accessory is supported on Switch 2.
  5. Plan storage. Digital games, updates and upgrade data need free space. Switch 2 expandable storage requires a microSD Express card; an ordinary microSD card is not compatible.

This process prevents the most common mistake: treating “the game starts” as proof that every mode, accessory and enhancement is available.

Do physical Switch cartridges work on Switch 2?

Yes, when Nintendo lists the game card as compatible. Insert the original cartridge into Switch 2 and use the game in its original form; any required update or optional upgrade is a separate matter. A cartridge does not turn an unsupported or partially compatible title into a fully compatible one, so check the game’s entry first.

Physical ownership also affects how you obtain an upgrade. Nintendo states that owners of a physical original game can purchase the corresponding upgrade pack through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store or participating retailers when that pack exists. Keep the game card available when launching the base game if the title requires it; the compatibility documentation does not establish that a digital entitlement is automatically created from inserting a cartridge.

What happens to digital Switch games?

Nintendo’s compatibility statement explicitly includes digital games. A compatible digital purchase can therefore be used on Switch 2 rather than being automatically invalidated by the console change.

Compatibility and save-data migration are separate questions. The official compatibility wording confirms access to compatible software, but it does not by itself promise that every save file, cloud feature or peripheral-dependent function transfers in the same way. Check Nintendo’s current account, data-transfer and title-specific instructions for the exact game before deleting the original installation or relying on a particular save.

Digital ownership also makes storage planning more important. Switch 2 uses microSD Express for expandable storage, and Nintendo’s launch information says ordinary microSD cards are not compatible. Recheck the card specification and capacity guidance for your region and current system software before buying storage.

Which Switch games are not fully compatible?

Nintendo does not present compatibility as a blanket guarantee for the whole library. Its support information distinguishes among:

  • Compatible: the game is supported on Switch 2, subject to any notes Nintendo provides.
  • Partially compatible: the game can be used, but one or more functions, accessories or modes have limitations.
  • Unsupported: Nintendo does not consider the title usable on Switch 2 in the documented configuration.

The practical answer to “Which games are not compatible?” is title-specific. A static list in an article can become stale when Nintendo adds a system update or changes a support note, so use the current official list for a purchase decision. If a game is important to you, read the notes rather than stopping at a compatibility icon: the limitation may affect the exact feature you intend to use.

Can you use old Joy-Con controllers and other accessories?

Accessory support is selective, not universal. Nintendo says some original Switch accessories continue to work with Switch 2, but it does not promise that every accessory will function. Check the accessory and game combination separately when a title depends on motion controls, a physical attachment or another specialized device.

The direction is not symmetrical: Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller cannot be used with the original Nintendo Switch. That restriction does not mean every original Joy-Con accessory is supported on Switch 2, so retain the original controllers only for uses that Nintendo specifically identifies as compatible.

What is GameChat, and does it require Switch 2?

GameChat is a Switch 2 feature for voice chat, video chat, screen sharing and playing together. Nintendo requires a Switch 2 system, a persistent internet connection and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The open-access period ran from June 5, 2025 through March 31, 2026; after that period, the membership requirement applies according to Nintendo’s current service terms.

Nintendo documents groups of up to 12 friends. With a compatible USB camera, video chat supports up to four simultaneous video participants. A camera is therefore optional for voice-only use but required for the documented video-chat capability. GameChat availability does not change whether an individual Switch game is compatible; it is a console-level communication feature with its own network, membership and camera requirements.

Switch 2 launch date and storage requirement

Nintendo announced Switch 2 for release on June 5, 2025. The launch information reported by The Associated Press states that expandable storage requires a microSD Express memory card and that ordinary microSD cards are not compatible.

That requirement matters when moving a digital library or installing upgrade data. Treat card type and capacity as purchase details to verify for your region and current system software. A card that fits physically is not necessarily a supported storage device.

Original Switch version or Switch 2 Edition?

Use the following decision framework when both versions are available:

Question Choose the original version when… Choose or add the Switch 2 option when…
Do you already own the game? You have a compatible physical or digital copy and only need the base experience. You want the title’s separately sold upgrade pack.
What enhancement is offered? No upgrade is listed, or the free update covers what you need. The paid pack adds graphics, features or modes you specifically want.
Is the title fully supported? Nintendo lists the original release as compatible for your intended use. Nintendo’s notes identify a Switch 2 feature or mode that matters to you.
Do accessories matter? Your play style does not depend on an accessory with uncertain support. You have confirmed the required controller, camera or other accessory works.
How will you store it? You have enough internal space or supported storage for the base game. You have planned for updates and upgrade data on a supported microSD Express card.

Troubleshooting common compatibility problems

The game card is not recognized

  • Confirm that the card is an original Nintendo Switch game card and that the exact title appears on Nintendo’s compatible list.
  • Check for a title-specific note indicating partial or unsupported behavior.
  • Install any system or game update Nintendo identifies before judging compatibility.

The game launches, but an expected feature is missing

  • Look for a free update or paid upgrade pack; compatibility alone does not include every Switch 2 enhancement.
  • Read the title’s compatibility notes for accessory or mode limitations.
  • Confirm that the controller or camera required by the feature is supported.

A digital game or upgrade will not install

  • Verify that the software is listed as compatible and that you are using the correct account or purchase entitlement.
  • Free storage before retrying the download.
  • If using removable storage, confirm that it is microSD Express rather than an ordinary microSD card.

GameChat does not work

  • Confirm you are on Switch 2 with a persistent internet connection.
  • Check that the Nintendo Switch Online requirement is met after the open-access period.
  • For video, use a compatible USB camera and remember that Nintendo’s documented limit is four video participants, within a group limit of up to 12 friends.

Bottom line for moving from Switch to Switch 2

Switch 2 is backward-compatible with compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, so an existing library is not automatically lost or subject to universal repurchase. The decisions that require care are title-level compatibility, optional upgrade pricing, accessory support and storage. Check Nintendo’s current entry for each important game, then decide whether the original release, a free update, a paid upgrade pack or a Switch 2 Edition gives you the features you actually need.
