Do not assume Modern Warfare 4’s Campaign will work completely offline. Activision has explicitly confirmed a continuous internet connection for Multiplayer (including Private Matches) and DMZ, but its current Editions FAQ does not make the equivalent promise—or give a clear prohibition—for Campaign. The safest plan is to have internet for installation, updates, account sign-in and authentication, and to treat reliable no-connection Campaign play as unconfirmed until Activision publishes a platform-specific answer.
The short answer
Modern Warfare 4 may include a playable single-player Campaign, but the current official information does not establish that you can launch and finish it with no internet connection. That is different from saying the Campaign definitely requires a continuous connection. Activision has only made the continuous requirement explicit for Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and DMZ.
For a purchase decision, use this rule: if you regularly play where Wi-Fi or wired internet is unavailable, do not buy the game expecting the Campaign to function like a permanently offline disc-based story mode. Plan on an online setup and keep a connection available whenever you need dependable access.

Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 Editions FAQ contains the clearest published policy. It says: “This means you’ll need a continuous internet connection to play Multiplayer (including in Private Matches) and DMZ.” The sentence names those online modes; it does not add Campaign to the list.

This distinction matters. It would be inaccurate to rewrite “Multiplayer and DMZ require continuous internet” as “the Campaign definitely requires continuous internet.” It would be equally inaccurate to turn the missing Campaign statement into a promise that it works offline.
Why the Campaign question is still unresolved
No published offline-Campaign guarantee
The current official FAQ does not say that Campaign can be launched after installation with the network cable unplugged, nor does it describe an offline license check, a first-run authentication requirement, or how long a disconnected session can continue. Without one of those platform-specific statements, the practical behavior cannot be confirmed from the published policy.
Online systems can affect more than Multiplayer
Modern games may use online services for account authentication, entitlement checks, updates, streamed assets, anti-cheat components or profile synchronization. Activision specifically cites texture streaming when explaining its continuous connection rule for Multiplayer and DMZ. That explanation still does not tell us whether Campaign assets are fully local, partially delivered after installation, or checked online when the game starts.
A disc is a format, not an offline guarantee
A physical disc can contain much of a game while still requiring a large update, an account sign-in or a license check before the software is usable. Therefore, the existence of a disc does not answer the offline Campaign question by itself.

Internet and account requirements by platform
The platform pages add practical requirements even though they do not resolve Campaign’s offline status.

The Editions FAQ also mentions PlayStation Plus, Game Pass Essential or Nintendo Switch Online for social features and online modes on applicable consoles. Those subscriptions are tied to online functionality in the wording provided; they are not described as separate Campaign purchases.
What you need for the first installation
Even if Activision later confirms an offline Campaign mode, you should expect the initial setup to be online-dependent. Prepare the following before opening the game:

- A stable broadband connection. Use a wired connection where possible, especially for a large download or a substantial launch-day patch.
- Free storage. The published PC specification calls for a 115 GB SSD. Console installation size can differ by platform and may change with updates, so leave additional space beyond the initial figure shown by the storefront.
- An Activision account. The PlayStation listing explicitly requires one, and the publisher’s FAQ says a mobile phone number linked to an Activision account may be required.
- Current system software. Update the console, Windows, graphics drivers and the game launcher before troubleshooting sign-in or installation failures.
- PC security features. On PC, enable TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot as specified in the official requirements.
Do not schedule a first play session at a location with no internet unless you have already installed the game, completed sign-in and tested the exact Campaign launch path there. The current policy does not promise that this test will continue to work after a future update or license check.

Can the physical PS5 or Xbox disc be played offline?
Physical console editions are documented for PS5 and Xbox Series X. A disc may reduce the amount you need to download compared with a fully digital purchase, but it does not prove that all Campaign files are on the disc or that the console can validate the license without connecting.
Use this sequence when setting up a disc copy:
- Connect the console to the internet before inserting the disc.
- Install the disc contents and accept every required game update.
- Sign in to the platform account and the required Activision account.
- Start the game once while online and open Campaign far enough to complete any first-run prompts.
- Only then test a temporary disconnect. Record whether the game reaches the main menu, whether Campaign loads a saved mission and whether a new mission can start.
If the offline test fails, reconnect and check for a pending update or account prompt. Do not infer from a successful test that all future launches will work offline; an update can change authentication or content-delivery behavior.
Do you need PlayStation Plus or Game Pass for the story?
The available platform wording makes these subscriptions requirements for Online Multiplayer, not Campaign. You should therefore distinguish two separate questions:
- Can you play online with other people? On Xbox, the listing says Game Pass Essential is required for Online Multiplayer. On PlayStation, the listing says PlayStation Plus is required for Online Multiplayer.
- Can Campaign run without an internet connection? The subscription wording does not answer that. Campaign’s offline behavior remains unconfirmed.
You may still need an internet connection and an Activision account even when you do not subscribe to a console multiplayer service. A subscription exemption is not the same thing as an offline exemption.

PC-specific considerations
For PC, the official Call of Duty requirements list “Network: Broadband Internet connection” under minimum, recommended and ray-tracing configurations. That is stronger guidance for PC buyers than the console pages provide. It means a broadband connection is part of the published PC specification, regardless of whether you intend to play only Campaign.
The same requirements call for a 115 GB SSD. Keep extra free space for shader caches, temporary patch files and later updates; the stated capacity is not a promise that future installations will fit in exactly that amount. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are also listed requirements, so a machine that launches other games may still need firmware or Windows security settings changed before Modern Warfare 4 will run.
The game is identified for Xbox on PC, Steam and Battle.net availability in the platform guide. Regardless of which supported launcher you use, sign-in, entitlement validation and updates can require internet access. If your PC will be disconnected, verify the launcher’s offline mode after the game has been authenticated online rather than assuming the setting will work automatically.

Activision lists a worldwide launch date of October 23, 2026. Digital preorders or prepurchases receive full Campaign Early Access beginning Friday, October 16, 2026, Pacific Time. These dates affect when the Campaign becomes available; they do not change the unresolved offline question.

Early Access can also involve a separate preload, entitlement check or day-one update. If you buy digitally for Early Access, sign in and complete the download before October 16. If you buy a physical copy, do not assume the disc can bypass launch-day authentication or patches.
What to do if your connection drops
The game is already open
Keep the console or PC connected if possible and avoid closing the game while offline behavior is unknown. A running Campaign session may continue, pause, return to the title screen or fail when it tries to save or validate content. The official material does not specify a grace period.
The game returns you to the sign-in screen
Restore the connection, sign in to the platform and Activision accounts, then restart the game. Check the platform’s download queue for an interrupted patch. Reinstalling should be a last resort because it does not remove a server-side authentication requirement.

You are planning travel or an outage
Before leaving, install every update, launch Campaign once online and test the exact console or PC in its disconnected state. Keep a backup of saves where the platform supports it. Treat the test as a convenience check, not a publisher guarantee, because future updates can alter the result.
How to make a buying decision

What would settle the question
A definitive answer would require Activision to state, for each platform, whether Campaign can be launched and played with the console or PC fully disconnected after installation. The useful details would include first-run authentication, required patches, save-game behavior and whether an account check recurs after updates.
Until that information appears, the accurate position is narrower than a simple yes or no: continuous internet is confirmed for Multiplayer and DMZ; Campaign offline play is not confirmed; internet should be considered necessary for setup, updates, authentication and dependable access.
