Yes—some Minecraft turn-based RPG mods are designed for multiplayer, but support is project-specific. Soulbound: Turnbattle is the clearest cooperative option: its project description advertises co-op battles for an unlimited number of players. TurnBasedMC can work on a server after its server-side configuration is changed. Other projects, such as Turn Based Combat and DungeonRPG, target different loaders, Minecraft versions, or RPG features, so you cannot assume that a mod marked “multiplayer” will work in every shared world or modpack.
For a reliable session, match the Minecraft release, mod loader, mod version, dependencies and relevant server configuration on every participant’s installation. Test one short encounter before committing a long-running world to the setup.
What “multiplayer compatible” means for a turn-based mod
In Minecraft, multiplayer compatibility is more than whether two players can join the same world. A turn-based RPG mod may need to coordinate combat state, turn order, entities, abilities and rewards between the server and every connected client. A project can therefore support multiplayer in one of several ways:
- Co-op combat: multiple players participate in the same turn-based encounter.
- Shared RPG systems: players can progress, use abilities or interact with companions together, even if the combat system is not a strict party-based turn system.
- Server-enabled mechanics: the mod works online only after an option is enabled or changed in the server configuration.
- Basic joinability: players can enter the world, but some combat features may be intended primarily for solo play.
Read the project’s documentation for the exact release you plan to install. A multiplayer label is not a guarantee that the mod will work with your loader, Minecraft version, dependencies or existing modpack.

The table describes the evidence published for these projects, not a promise that their latest files are interchangeable. Soulbound’s loader and release details must be checked against the current project page, while TurnBasedMC and Turn Based Combat belong to different loader families. A Forge or NeoForge server cannot be treated as a Fabric server simply because both mods change combat.
Soulbound: Turnbattle is the strongest co-op match
Soulbound: Turnbattle is the most direct answer when your goal is a turn-based RPG party playing together. Its project description calls it a turn-based RPG overhaul and explicitly says it has “Multiplayer support featuring co-op battles which support an unlimited amount of players.” That is a project-maintainer claim about the intended feature set; it does not remove the need to match the release, loader and dependencies.

Pay particular attention to the version notice on its CurseForge listing. The listing says the 1.20.1 version is no longer being updated and points users to a 1.21.1 version and current Modrinth releases. Do not mix a 1.20.1 client with a 1.21.1 server, or select a file solely because it has the same mod name. Choose one Minecraft release first, then obtain the matching file for every player and the server.

When Soulbound is a good choice
- Your group specifically wants shared turn-based battles rather than only an RPG-themed world.
- Everyone is willing to use the same Minecraft release and the same project release.
- The host can verify the project’s current loader and dependency requirements before creating the world.
What to verify before building a world around it
- The current release’s supported Minecraft version.
- The loader required by that release.
- Whether the server needs the mod, a dependency, or a configuration file in addition to the client installation.
- Whether all planned companion, dungeon or progression mods use compatible versions.
TurnBasedMC requires a server-side configuration change
TurnBasedMC documents a specific multiplayer requirement: the server configuration must be changed on the server side for the relevant setting to take effect. Its documentation explains that local single-player uses the local configuration, while multiplayer setups require the server configuration to be changed on the server.
This distinction explains a common failure pattern. A player can enable the option in their own client or single-player configuration, launch a test world and see turn-based behavior, then join a hosted server where the behavior is absent. The server is authoritative for the multiplayer setting, so changing only a client-side file does not complete the setup.
Practical TurnBasedMC sequence
- Pick the exact Minecraft release and a Forge or NeoForge loader version supported by the TurnBasedMC file you intend to use.
- Install the matching loader and mod dependencies on the server and on each client, following the project’s release notes.
- Start the server once so it generates its configuration files, then stop it cleanly.
- Open the generated TurnBasedMC configuration in the server’s configuration directory and apply the multiplayer-related setting required by the documentation.
- Restart the server, have every player join with the matching client setup, and test a short encounter.
- If the setting still does not apply, compare the server configuration with the client configuration and inspect the server log for a missing dependency or version mismatch.
The exact file name and option label can change between releases. Use the instructions for the installed version rather than copying a setting from an older tutorial.

Loader and version matching is non-negotiable
Forge, NeoForge and Fabric are separate mod-loader environments. A Fabric 1.20.1 mod is not automatically usable on a Forge or NeoForge 1.20.1 server, and matching the Minecraft number alone does not solve the loader difference.
Match these items for every player
- Minecraft release: for example, do not combine 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 files in the same session.
- Loader family and loader version: use the loader required by the mod release.
- Mod file version: keep the same release on the server and clients when the project requires a synchronized installation.
- Dependencies: install the required libraries and APIs, such as Fabric API when a Fabric project lists it.
- Configuration: copy or deliberately reproduce server-side settings instead of assuming each player’s local file controls the world.
Some mods are primarily server-side, some are primarily client-side and others require both sides. The project documentation for the exact file is the authority. If it does not clearly state where a mod belongs, test with a backup world before inviting the whole group.
How to set up a co-op turn-based world
Use this process whether you are hosting on a dedicated server, a rented server or a LAN world. The names of folders and launchers vary, but the compatibility checks remain the same.

- Define the target. Decide whether you need strict co-op turn battles, general turn-based combat, or shared RPG dungeons and companions. This determines whether Soulbound, TurnBasedMC, Turn Based Combat or DungeonRPG is the appropriate starting point.
- Choose one Minecraft release. Write it down before downloading anything. If you choose Soulbound, pay attention to the project notice that its 1.20.1 release is no longer being updated and that newer work is directed toward 1.21.1 and current Modrinth releases.
- Choose the loader. Use Forge or NeoForge for a compatible TurnBasedMC setup; use Fabric for the documented Turn Based Combat 1.20.1 listing or a DungeonRPG installation that lists Fabric Loader.
- Create a clean test instance. Install only the loader, the turn-based or RPG mod and its required dependencies first. This isolates compatibility problems from unrelated optimization, biome or content mods.
- Install the server files. Put the required server-side mods and dependencies in the server’s mod directory. Start the server once to generate folders and configuration files, then stop it.
- Apply server settings. For TurnBasedMC, change the relevant option in the server configuration. A client-only change is not enough for multiplayer.
- Build identical client instances. Give every participant the same Minecraft release, loader family, mod versions and required dependencies. Avoid allowing an automatic launcher update to replace one player’s file.
- Connect one test player. Check that the player can join, trigger an encounter, see the same turn order and complete the battle without a disconnect.
- Add the rest of the group. Invite players only after the first encounter works. Test a second battle with the intended number of participants, especially if you are relying on Soulbound’s advertised large co-op battles.
- Back up the world. Keep a copy of the world and server configuration before adding unrelated mods or changing versions.
LAN worlds versus dedicated servers
A LAN world is convenient for a small group, but the host’s game session still supplies the server side of the world. The host should therefore apply any server-required configuration to the host world and ensure that joining players use matching clients. A dedicated server makes configuration and backups easier to manage, but it does not eliminate version or loader requirements.
For TurnBasedMC, the important distinction is not whether the world is rented, dedicated or opened to LAN; multiplayer requires the relevant setting to be changed on the server side. In a LAN session, that server side is effectively the host’s world. In a dedicated setup, it is the dedicated server’s configuration directory.

- Wrong loader: a Fabric mod was placed in a Forge or NeoForge instance, or the reverse.
- Different Minecraft releases: the server and client are on different releases, even if the mod name is identical.
- Missing dependency: a required API or library is absent from one side.
- Different mod files: one player updated while another retained an older release.
- Client-only configuration: a setting was changed locally but the server still uses its default.
- Conflicting gameplay mods: another combat, entity or progression mod changes the same systems.
- Stale project guidance: an old tutorial refers to a release that the maintainer no longer updates.
Start troubleshooting with a clean instance and the smallest possible mod set. Once the basic encounter works, add one additional mod at a time and test again.

Players cannot join the server
- Compare the Minecraft release shown by the server and each client.
- Compare the loader family and loader versions.
- Compare mod file names and versions, including dependencies.
- Read the first error in the client and server logs rather than relying only on the final disconnect message.
Players can join, but combat is not turn-based
- Confirm that the mod is intended to affect multiplayer, not only local single-player.
- For TurnBasedMC, verify the setting in the server configuration, restart the server and test again.
- Check that the server is running the expected mod file and not an older copy in a second mod directory.
One player sees different turns, entities or effects
- Confirm that the player’s client has the same mod and dependency versions.
- Remove optional client-side additions temporarily and retest.
- Test a new encounter in a backup or disposable world to rule out data created by an earlier incompatible version.
The world worked until another mod was added
- Remove the newest addition and reproduce the problem.
- Check whether both mods alter combat, entities, dimensions, companions or progression.
- Consult the exact release notes for compatibility warnings before restoring the mod.
Choosing the right project for your group

If your group already has a large modpack, select the project that matches the pack’s loader and Minecraft release first. Rebuilding the entire pack around a preferred combat mechanic is usually more work than testing a compatible project in the pack’s existing environment.
Questions to answer before inviting friends
- Which Minecraft release will everyone use?
- Which loader does the chosen mod require?
- Does the project require the mod on the server, the clients or both?
- Are all dependencies installed at the exact required versions?
- Does multiplayer require a server-side configuration change?
- Has one complete encounter been tested before the main world is created?
- Is the project’s current release still maintained for the selected Minecraft version?
Answering those questions prevents the most common assumption: that two mods with “turn-based” in their names can be combined simply because they target Minecraft.
