Yes—Minecraft Preview and Android Beta can support multiplayer between different platforms when every player is on the Bedrock testing track, running the same preview build, and meeting the account and console-online requirements. Xbox, PlayStation, Windows, mobile and other Bedrock-compatible devices can play together within those limits. Java Edition snapshots are separate and cannot join a Bedrock Preview game.

The most common failure is not the console brand. It is a mismatch in edition, Preview/Beta build, account setup or session type. Use the checks below before troubleshooting invitations or network settings.

The rules that determine whether cross-platform Preview multiplayer works

Everyone must be on Bedrock Preview or Beta

Minecraft Preview and the Android Beta are testing channels for Bedrock Edition. They are not Java Edition snapshots. A player using the normal Bedrock release may be unable to join a world running a Preview build, and a player using a Java snapshot cannot join it at all.

Before anyone sends an invitation, have each person identify the title they launched. The start screen should indicate Preview or Beta rather than the standard Minecraft application. On computers, do not assume that installing Java snapshots provides access to Bedrock Preview; the editions use different clients and multiplayer systems.

The Preview build must match

Minecraft Help states: “All players must be using the same version of Beta or Preview to join a multiplayer game.” A player whose client updated earlier can therefore be blocked even when everyone is using Bedrock and the same platform family.

Compare the version or build number shown in each player’s menu. If the numbers differ, update the older installation where an update is available. If one platform has received a release that another platform does not yet offer, the practical choices are to wait for the rollout to converge or have everyone use the same available build.

The edition must match

Cross-play is available within Bedrock, including Bedrock Preview/Beta, but not between Bedrock and Java. This is an edition boundary rather than a console restriction: an Xbox player and a PlayStation player can meet in a compatible Bedrock Preview session, while a Java snapshot player cannot enter that same world.

Which multiplayer arrangements are supported?

Arrangement Can it work across platforms? Conditions
Friend hosts a Preview world Yes, within Bedrock Preview/Beta All participants use the same Preview/Beta build, sign in as required and have multiplayer access on their platforms. The host must be online.
Regular Bedrock release world joining a Preview player Not a reliable or supported match The release and testing clients can be on different builds. Put everyone on the same Preview/Beta version for a Preview session.
Preview/Beta Realm Yes, within Bedrock Preview/Beta An eligible active Bedrock Realms subscriber creates the Preview/Beta Realm, and every invited member also enrolls in Preview/Beta.
Regular Realm No for Preview/Beta clients Regular Realms do not function as Preview/Beta servers. A Preview player needs a separate Preview/Beta Realm.
Java snapshot joining Bedrock Preview No Java and Bedrock are separate editions and cannot join one another’s multiplayer sessions.
Another compatible Bedrock server Potentially The server must support the same Bedrock Preview/Beta build and the host’s platform and account permissions must allow multiplayer.

How to play with friends on different platforms

  1. Confirm the client. Ask every player to launch Minecraft Preview or the applicable Android Beta, not the ordinary Minecraft release and not a Java snapshot.
  2. Record each build number. Open the game’s menu or title screen and compare the displayed version on every device. Update or wait until all clients show the same version.
  3. Confirm Bedrock edition. Make sure each person is using the Bedrock testing track. A Java player needs a Bedrock-compatible copy and access to its Preview/Beta program to participate.
  4. Sign in to the Microsoft account used for Minecraft. Cross-platform friend lists and Realms invitations depend on account sign-in. On PlayStation, link the Microsoft account to the PlayStation Network account before attempting cross-platform play.
  5. Add one another as Minecraft friends. Use the in-game account and friends controls, then check that each person appears online. Privacy settings can prevent invitations even when the clients are compatible.
  6. Have the host open the world. The owner of a normal multiplayer world must launch the Preview world and remain online while others play. Guests can join only while that hosted session is available.
  7. Send or accept the invitation. The invited player should look in the game’s Friends or join menu rather than relying only on a console-level party invitation. If the world is missing, return to the build, account and permission checks.
  8. For persistent access, use a Preview/Beta Realm. Create or open a Realm specifically from the Preview/Beta client. Invitees must also be enrolled in Preview/Beta; a member who stays on the regular release cannot use that Realm as a normal Realm.

Platform and account requirements

PlayStation

PlayStation users need to link a Microsoft account to PlayStation Network to play with people on other platforms or join Realms. Linking is separate from owning the game and must be completed for each account that will participate.

Xbox and other consoles

Console multiplayer may require the platform’s online subscription. The exact entitlement and parental-control rules vary by platform and account type, so verify that the player can use online multiplayer outside Minecraft before diagnosing a Preview problem.

Preview installation and ownership

Preview access is device-specific. Minecraft’s console instructions cover PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S and describe digital ownership requirements for the platform, with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate exception. Availability and enrollment can change by device, region and program stage; use the official installation instructions for the particular console, phone or computer before planning a group session.

Installing Preview on one device does not automatically enroll the same account on every other device. Each participant should verify that the client they intend to use actually offers the Preview or Beta track and that the game license is valid on that device.

Using a Preview/Beta Realm instead of a hosted world

A friend’s hosted world is the simplest no-hosting-cost option, but it disappears from the join list when the host leaves. A Preview/Beta Realm keeps the world available through the Realm service, subject to the service’s testing support and the host’s subscription.

An active Bedrock Realms subscriber can create a separate Preview/Beta Realm. The ordinary Realm and the Preview/Beta Realm are not interchangeable: moving a Preview player into a regular Realm does not turn that Realm into a testing server.

Troubleshooting when the cross-platform invitation fails

The friend does not appear online

  • Check that both players launched Preview/Beta rather than the regular client.
  • Confirm that each person is signed in to the intended Microsoft account.
  • On PlayStation, verify Microsoft-account and PlayStation Network linking.
  • Ask the host to close and reopen the world after both accounts show online.
  • Review account privacy, family and multiplayer-permission settings.

The world appears but joining is refused

  • Compare the displayed build numbers again; a single update can put clients on different versions.
  • Confirm that every player is on Bedrock Preview/Beta, not Java.
  • Check whether the host is using a regular Realm. Preview clients require a Preview/Beta Realm, not a normal Realm.
  • On consoles, confirm that the required online subscription is active and that the account is permitted to play online.

One platform has no Preview option

Preview rollout is not identical on every device. Do not substitute a Java snapshot or an unrelated beta for Bedrock Preview. Check the platform-specific Minecraft installation instructions; if the device is not eligible, that player cannot join a Preview-only session from that device until an appropriate Bedrock testing option is available.

Guests can join, but the world is unavailable later

This is expected for a friend-hosted world when the host is offline. Use a Preview/Beta Realm for a persistent world, and ensure every member remains enrolled in the testing track. If the host leaves the Preview program or switches clients, access can change.

Examples of setups that work and fail

Xbox and PlayStation on the same Bedrock Preview build

This is a supported cross-platform pattern when both players have the same Preview version, Microsoft accounts are configured, PlayStation Network linking is complete for the PlayStation player, and any required console online access is active. The Xbox player can host a world and invite the PlayStation player, or they can use a Preview/Beta Realm.

Phone Beta and console Preview

An Android Beta player can join a compatible Bedrock Preview session from a console when the builds align and account and multiplayer permissions permit the connection. The phone’s Beta label does not make it compatible with Java; it is part of the Bedrock testing family.

Java snapshot and Bedrock Preview

This combination fails by design. Updating both games, adding Microsoft friends or purchasing a Realm cannot bridge the Java/Bedrock edition boundary. The Java player must use Bedrock Preview on a supported device to join the Bedrock group.

Preview player and regular Realm

This also fails as a session choice. The Realm owner needs to create the Preview/Beta version of the Realm, and each invitee needs the corresponding Preview/Beta client.

What to expect from Preview multiplayer

Preview and Beta builds are testing software. Version rollouts can be staggered, and a build that works today can become unavailable after one player updates. Keep the group on a deliberately chosen build when possible, and avoid updating one device immediately before a scheduled session unless the others can update as well.

Worlds and features introduced in testing may not behave like those in the regular release. Keep backups of important worlds, and treat a Preview Realm or hosted Preview world as a testing environment rather than a guaranteed permanent copy. Compatibility with add-ons, server software and worlds can also depend on the specific build.
