Yes—you can start with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 without playing the earlier games. For the fullest understanding of the continuing story, PlayStation recommends Marvel’s Spider-Man, then Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, then Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Venom is a major villain in Spider-Man 2; official sources currently do not announce a separate Venom game.
Do you need to play the earlier Spider-Man games first?
No. PlayStation’s official FAQ directly addresses whether players can jump into the series and says: “You can enjoy Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 without prior story or character knowledge, but we recommend you explore previous titles to fully experience the emerging narrative.” That makes the earlier games recommended context, not prerequisites.
Starting with Spider-Man 2 means you can follow its main campaign without having completed the first game or Miles Morales. You will, however, meet characters and encounter relationships that were established earlier. Playing the preceding games lets those developments arrive in sequence instead of requiring the sequel to explain them while its own plot is moving forward.

The decision therefore depends on what you want:
- Fastest route to Venom: begin with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
- Most complete story context: play all three games in release-story order.
- A middle-ground catch-up: play the first Spider-Man, then Miles Morales, before starting the sequel; Miles Morales is a connected chapter rather than an unrelated side story.
The recommended story order
PlayStation describes the narrative as spanning three connected games. Its recommended sequence is:

| Order | Game | Place in the story | Official platform information |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Marvel’s Spider-Man | The opening chapter of this Insomniac Spider-Man continuity | PS4 Game of the Year Edition; PS5 Remastered edition |
| 2 | Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales | Set approximately one year after the first game | PS4 and PS5 |
| 3 | Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 | Set roughly nine months after Miles Morales; the Venom-relevant entry | PS5; Marvel’s official listing also identifies PC |
The one-year and nine-month intervals are approximate in-universe story gaps, not the games’ publication dates. PlayStation’s series overview presents this chronology and identifies the three titles as parts of the same continuing narrative.
1. Marvel’s Spider-Man
The first game establishes the setting, supporting cast and version of Peter Parker that the later stories continue. If you want the strongest foundation for the sequel, this is the natural starting point rather than an optional prologue.
When choosing an edition, PlayStation says the PS4 Game of the Year Edition and the PS5 Remastered release include The City That Never Sleeps expansion. That expansion is additional story content connected to the first game, so an edition that includes it gives you more of the material available before moving on. Edition availability can vary by region and retailer; the story order does not depend on owning a particular collector’s product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Miles Morales is the second story entry and takes place about a year after the first game. It is shorter in scope than a numbered sequel but important to the sequence: it advances the world and its characters before the events of Spider-Man 2.

PlayStation lists the game for PS4 and PS5. Insomniac’s support information identifies a PS5 Ultimate Edition and notes that physical preorder editions were offered in the United States and Canada. Those details describe editions that have existed; they do not guarantee that a particular physical package is currently in stock.
If you are buying only one earlier game before the sequel, Miles Morales is the one you should not treat as a completely unrelated spin-off. Playing it after the first game preserves the intended progression and explains why PlayStation places it between the two larger chapters.
3. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the third game in the recommended sequence and the title that introduces Venom as a villain. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced its worldwide launch for PS5 on October 20, 2023. Marvel’s official game listing gives the same October 20, 2023 release date and lists PS5 and PC availability.
The game is designed as a single-player experience. You can begin it without prior knowledge, but the approximately nine-month jump from Miles Morales and the continuing plot mean that earlier games provide useful character and story context.

Where Venom fits—and what is known about a separate Venom game
In the official material for this series, Venom appears in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Insomniac’s game page identifies Venom as one of the villains in that title, so you do not need to wait for another release to encounter the character in this continuity.
The official pages reviewed for this question do not announce a standalone Venom game. That is a statement about what those current official announcements establish, not proof that no future project could ever be made. Rumors, leaks or fan speculation should not be presented as confirmation. The safest current conclusion is that Spider-Man 2 is the officially released Venom-related entry, while no separate Venom game has been formally announced in these sources.
PlayStation’s 2021 announcement discussed Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Wolverine; it did not announce a Venom game. The announcement can be read on the PlayStation Blog. Insomniac’s current game description likewise identifies Venom within Spider-Man 2, rather than as a separately announced title.
Which starting point is right for you?
Start with Spider-Man 2 if you want the quickest route
This is the officially supported shortcut. You can buy and play Spider-Man 2 without completing either earlier game, and the campaign is built to be playable without prior story or character knowledge. Expect some relationships and references to carry more weight for returning players, but you are not blocked by missing save data or a required tutorial campaign.

Play all three if continuity matters most
Choose Marvel’s Spider-Man, then Miles Morales, then Spider-Man 2 when you want the narrative to unfold in the order PlayStation recommends. This approach also lets you experience the approximate one-year and nine-month in-story transitions rather than encountering them only as backstory in the sequel.
Use a two-game catch-up if your time is limited
Playing the first game followed by Spider-Man 2 gives you the opening chapter and the Venom-relevant sequel while skipping the middle release. It is a practical compromise, but it omits the chapter that PlayStation explicitly places between them. If you later decide you want that missing portion, Miles Morales remains available as its own PS4/PS5 story entry.
Platforms and editions when you plan the sequence
Platform labels differ by game and edition, so check the exact product page for your region before purchasing. The following points are established by the official pages:

Are the special editions and accessories necessary?
No. A themed product does not change the recommended story order or unlock required narrative knowledge.
For Spider-Man 2, PlayStation documented a Collector’s Edition containing a game voucher, a SteelBook case and a 19-inch statue. It also documented a themed DualSense wireless controller and console covers. PlayStation noted limited regional availability and supply for these products. They are optional physical merchandise; the standard game is sufficient for the campaign and for following the chronology.
If your priority is story coverage, spend your decision-making effort on which game editions include the content you want—particularly whether your first-game edition includes The City That Never Sleeps—rather than on a controller, console cover or collector’s statue.
A practical play plan
- Decide whether context or speed is your priority. Choose the three-game sequence for maximum continuity, or start with Spider-Man 2 if you mainly want the Venom-focused chapter.
- Match each game to your hardware. Confirm whether you are buying the PS4, PS5, Remastered or PC listing applicable to your region. Do not assume that an edition name on one platform includes the same content on another.
- Check expansion inclusion for the first game. The PS4 Game of the Year Edition and PS5 Remastered edition are the versions PlayStation identifies as including The City That Never Sleeps.
- Play Miles Morales between the first game and Spider-Man 2 if you are following the recommended chronology. Its position is supported by PlayStation’s approximately one-year and nine-month story timeline.
- Start Spider-Man 2 whenever you are ready. Prior completion is optional, and Venom’s role is part of this game rather than dependent on a separately announced Venom title.
The bottom line for a new player
You can play Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 first and still enjoy it. If you want the most coherent version of the continuing Insomniac story, play Marvel’s Spider-Man, then Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, then Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Venom is in Spider-Man 2; current official sources do not establish a separate Venom game announcement, so there is no announced Venom release you need to play before beginning this sequence.
