Yes, usually. Redeem the Humble Steam key, install the game on your Steam Deck, launch it once while connected to the internet, then put Steam into Offline Mode and test the game with Wi-Fi disabled. Valve says an installed game can be played while Steam Deck is offline unless that particular game requires an internet connection. The exception is important: always-online titles, games with mandatory external launchers, and software that performs an online ownership check will not work fully offline.

What “offline” means for a Humble game

There are two different Humble delivery methods, and they should not be confused:

  • A Humble Steam key is redeemed on a Steam account. Steam then treats the title as part of that account’s library, and offline access follows Steam’s Offline Mode rules plus the game’s own DRM and launcher requirements.
  • A DRM-free download is a separate installer or game archive. It does not create a Steam license and may run without the Steam client, but you must install and manage it yourself on Steam Deck.

In both cases, “offline” means the game is installed on local storage and does not need a live network connection during play. It does not mean that every game purchased from Humble is permanently independent of servers. The individual game can still require account authentication, a third-party launcher, multiplayer services, or an always-online check.

Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ states: “Once a game is installed on disk, you can play while Steam Deck is offline unless the game requires an internet connection.” That is the practical rule to apply to a Humble purchase.

How a Humble Steam key works on Steam Deck

Redeeming the key

When the Humble page supplies a Steam activation key, redeem it on the Steam account you intend to use on the Deck. The license is bound to that account, not to the Humble download page or to the hardware. After redemption, install the title from the Steam library just as you would a game purchased directly through Steam.

What Steam Offline Mode does

Steam Offline Mode allows the client to use locally installed and prepared games without contacting Steam during play. Steam Support instructs users to sign in online, save their credentials, finish updates, launch the game once to confirm that no further requirements appear, and then select Steam > Go Offline.

This is client-level access, not a guarantee that the game itself has no DRM. Steamworks’ Steam DRM wrapper verifies ownership by requiring Steam to launch the game. The wrapper is designed to deter extremely casual piracy, but it is not a promise that the title can operate without every other service its publisher chose to add.

Why one Steam game works offline and another does not

A developer can add an online authentication step, a mandatory external launcher, or a server-dependent game mode. Steam explicitly warns: “Games that require an active connection or use an external launcher will not work in offline mode.” A title can therefore be delivered through Steam and still fail when the Deck has no connection.

Steam key versus DRM-free Humble download

Comparison Humble Steam key DRM-free download
License or account binding Redeemed into a specific Steam account Separate license or download supplied by the publisher; it does not create a Steam license
Steam client Required for installation and normally for launching, including Steam DRM checks May run without Steam once installed, unless the game’s own software requires another service
External launcher or online checks Possible; Steam delivery does not remove game-level requirements Possible; the installer or executable can still require an account, launcher, or network
Installation on SteamOS Usually the standard Steam Deck installation flow May require Desktop Mode, Proton, a Linux-native build, and adding the executable as a non-Steam game
Updates Steam downloads and applies updates when the Deck is online You obtain and install updates manually from the publisher or Humble download page
Cloud saves Steam Cloud may be available if the game supports it; synchronization needs a connection No Steam Cloud integration by default; save handling depends on the game and your manual backup method
Offline reliability Good after first-run preparation when the game has no mandatory network or external launcher Potentially very good after setup, but compatibility and installer behavior require more hands-on checking

BeamNG’s publisher documentation illustrates the distinction: Humble and Steam are official stores, but a buyer can either redeem an activation key on Steam or download a DRM-free version. Those are two different paths with different setup and support expectations.

Prepare a Humble Steam game for offline travel

  1. Redeem the key on the intended account. Open the Humble download page, reveal the Steam key, and activate it while signed in to the Steam account that will be used on the Deck. If you use a different account, the game will not appear in the expected library.
  2. Connect the Deck to the internet. Switch to Gaming Mode, open the Steam library, and install the game to internal storage or a formatted microSD card with sufficient free space.
  3. Finish every update. Let Steam complete the game download, shader processing, compatibility-tool installation, and any Steam client updates. Do not assume that a partially updated installation will launch offline.
  4. Launch the game online. Reach the title screen or load a saved game. This first run can install prerequisites, create configuration files, initialize Steam DRM, and reveal an account or launcher requirement that is invisible during installation.
  5. Close the game and Steam normally. A normal exit gives Steam time to write credentials, configuration, and local save data. Avoid forcing the Deck off immediately after the first launch.
  6. Enter Offline Mode before losing connectivity. In the Steam client, choose Steam > Settings, then switch to Offline Mode when prompted. Keep the Deck powered on long enough for the client to confirm the change.
  7. Perform a real offline test. Disable Wi-Fi or enable airplane mode, then launch the game from the library. Start a new session or load a save and verify that the controls, graphics settings, and local saves work.

Testing at home is more useful than discovering a missing prerequisite on a train or in a hotel with unreliable internet. If the game fails this test, treat that as a compatibility result rather than assuming the Humble key itself is invalid.

Using a DRM-free Humble download on Steam Deck

Install it in Desktop Mode

Valve documents support for installing non-Steam software and adding it to Steam, but the game’s installer still determines what is required. Switch to Desktop Mode, download the Linux build if one is supplied, or run the Windows installer through Proton. Install the files in a location you can access from Gaming Mode.

Add the executable as a non-Steam game

In the desktop Steam client, use the option to add a non-Steam game, browse to the installed executable, and add it to your library. If the Windows build needs Proton, open the new entry’s compatibility settings and select a Proton version. Return to Gaming Mode and launch it from the library.

Expect manual maintenance

A DRM-free build normally does not receive Steam’s automatic updates, shader processing, controller configuration, or cloud-save synchronization. Keep a copy of the installer and note where the save files are stored. A later publisher update may require downloading a new build and repeating part of the setup.

“DRM-free” removes a particular licensing check; it does not guarantee native SteamOS support, perfect controller mappings, or freedom from an account requirement built into the game. Read the game’s own installation and system notes before choosing this route.

Storage requirements and microSD cards

Offline play requires the complete game to be installed locally. A download that remains on a Humble page or in a cloud library is not available when the Deck has no connection. Large games can consume most of the internal drive, so Steam Deck’s microSD expansion is useful for an offline library.

Steam Deck formats supported microSD cards as ext4 with casefolding. Format the card in the Deck’s storage settings before moving or installing games on it, and leave enough free space for updates and shader data. Storage capacity solves only the space problem: it does not bypass DRM, an external launcher, or a required network connection.

Diagnose a game that will not launch offline

The Steam library says the game is unavailable

Reconnect briefly and check that the correct Steam account is signed in, the installation is complete, and the client has entered Offline Mode properly. Launch the title online once more, then repeat the offline test. A key redeemed on another account will not be transferable through the Deck’s local files.

The game opens a launcher or login window

An external launcher is a common reason for failure. Steam Support states that games requiring an external launcher will not work in Offline Mode. If the launcher cannot cache credentials and licenses locally, there is no Steam setting that can make the title fully offline.

The game reports that an internet connection is required

This is usually an intentional game-level requirement, not a defective Humble key. Some games require online authentication at every start; others restrict only multiplayer, cloud features, or a live-service mode. Check whether the offline failure occurs before the main menu or only when selecting an online feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The first run worked, but a later offline run failed

Re-establish a connection and check for a pending Steam or game update. A changed executable, expired cached sign-in, or newly introduced launcher requirement can invalidate a previous preparation. Launch online, complete any prompts, close Steam normally, re-enter Offline Mode, and test again before traveling.

The DRM-free build will not start

Verify that you installed the correct Linux build or selected a compatible Proton version for the Windows build. Confirm that the executable path is still valid, that required files were not left in a temporary download folder, and that the game’s installer completed successfully. Add the actual game executable, not only an installer, as the non-Steam entry.

What still works without a connection

For a successfully prepared title, the game’s local campaign, saves stored on the Deck, graphics options, and controller settings generally remain available. Steam Cloud synchronization, achievements that need server confirmation, multiplayer matchmaking, leaderboards, web-based account features, and downloads obviously wait until the Deck reconnects. A game may open offline while selectively disabling those network features; that behavior is different from an entirely offline-independent game.

A practical decision guide

  • Choose the Steam key when you want the simplest Deck installation, Steam library management, automatic updates while online, and possible Steam Cloud support.
  • Choose the DRM-free build when you specifically want files that can be launched without the Steam client and are willing to manage Desktop Mode, Proton or Linux installation, updates, and backups yourself.
  • Do not rely on either option for travel until the exact game has passed an airplane-mode launch test. The decisive factors are the game’s DRM, launcher, and first-run behavior, not the store where the purchase was made.

The safest routine is to prepare every title while connected, launch it once, switch Steam to Offline Mode, disable Wi-Fi, and test it before leaving. If it fails, identify whether the cause is account binding, an external launcher, online DRM, an incomplete installation, or missing local storage; each points to a different limitation.
