Officially, no. Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player action RPG. Its publisher FAQ says it has no online or co-op gameplay, so you cannot invite another person into your story on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch. An unofficial Windows-PC project called Hogwarts MP can provide a shared sandbox, but it is separate from the official game and does not guarantee that two players can complete the original campaign together.
The short answer
If by “play with friends” you mean joining a friend’s save, completing quests together, or fighting through the main story as two witches or wizards, Hogwarts Legacy does not support that officially. The game is designed as a solo, open-world action RPG set in the 1800s Wizarding World.

The official FAQ describes the experience as single-player and explicitly says it has no online or co-op gameplay. That rules out built-in online multiplayer, local split-screen, and an official cooperative campaign. The same limitation applies across the game’s listed PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch versions.

It is a multiplayer sandbox rather than a publisher-supported mode. Its documentation warns that it is not a promise that the original Hogwarts Legacy story can be completed cooperatively.

What the official game supports
A solo campaign on every official platform
Your character, save file, quests, combat progression, and story decisions belong to one player. You can purchase the game for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch, but changing platform does not add a multiplayer mode. There is no official “invite player” option hidden in the menus.
Physical-copy owners should also account for installation requirements: the official FAQ explains that a console or PC disc owner needs an internet connection to install the Day 1 patch. That connection requirement is for installation and updates, not for turning the game into an online experience.
Companions are NPCs, not co-op partners
Several students can become your friends and accompany you as companions. They can participate in conversations, accompany certain activities, and add personality to your adventure, but they are computer-controlled story characters. You cannot hand control of a companion to a friend, and a companion does not represent a second player slot.

What “single-player” means here
- No online campaign: another player cannot connect to your world through an official server.
- No local co-op: there is no split-screen or shared-screen two-player mode.
- No cooperative save progression: a friend cannot join your character to earn quest progress or make decisions in your save.
- No cross-platform party system: the game does not provide a party, lobby, friends list, or matchmaking feature.
You can still enjoy the game socially by comparing builds and choices, watching someone stream a session, or taking turns on separate saves. Those are ways to share the experience around the game, not multiplayer features inside it.
Can two people play Hogwarts Legacy together?
Not in the official release. Two people can play at the same time only by using separate copies and separate saves, normally on separate systems. One person cannot join the other person’s story to complete a dungeon, attend a class, or fight a boss as a second character.
For families sharing a console, the practical arrangement is separate user profiles and independent saves. For friends in different homes, each person plays their own campaign and can compare decisions, spell combinations, gear, collectibles, or completion progress. Cloud saves and platform account features do not change the game’s single-player design.
The unofficial Hogwarts MP option on Windows PC
What it is
Hogwarts MP is an unofficial project that adds a server-based multiplayer framework to the PC version. The project’s own material presents it as a way to share a Hogwarts Legacy-derived sandbox with other players. It is not an update from the game’s publisher or a feature endorsed by the official Hogwarts Legacy release.

Because servers can define their own rules and modes, the experience can differ from one server to another. A host might configure activities, restrictions, or social rules that another host does not use. “Multiplayer” therefore describes the framework’s ability to connect players, not a single standardized online campaign.
Requirements before you try it
- Windows PC: the project is for the Windows computer version, not the PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch editions.
- A legitimate game copy: the documentation requires an authentic PC copy purchased through Steam or the Epic Games Store.
- Matching project and game builds: the launcher and installed build must be compatible with the server you want to join.
- Server access: you need a server to connect to, whether you host one or receive access from another host.
- Willingness to use pre-release software: the project documentation identifies the software as pre-release, so behavior and support can differ from the finished game.
What setup usually involves
- Install the official PC game first. Use a legitimate Steam or Epic Games Store installation and make sure it launches normally before adding any community framework.
- Check the Hogwarts MP documentation for the current launcher and build. Do not assume a project package remains compatible after a game update.
- Install the project exactly as its current instructions specify. Multiplayer frameworks commonly depend on a particular folder, launcher, or version; skipping a step can prevent the client from starting.
- Match the server’s required build. If your client and the host are on different versions, you may be unable to connect even when both installations appear complete.
- Join an available server or configure one as host. The host determines rules and available activities, so read that server’s instructions before expecting a particular style of play.
- Back up your saves and treat the project as experimental. Keep a clean, unmodified installation or a separate profile where possible, and avoid assuming that unofficial sessions will preserve official campaign progress.
These steps describe the decisions involved rather than promising a fixed installer workflow. Pre-release projects can change launchers, supported builds, and server procedures; follow the current Hogwarts MP documentation for the exact files and commands.
What you can and cannot expect from Hogwarts MP
| Question | Official Hogwarts Legacy | Unofficial Hogwarts MP |
|---|---|---|
| Supported platforms | PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch versions are listed by the official FAQ. | Windows PC only, according to the project documentation. |
| Ownership | Requires the relevant official game edition. | Requires a legitimate Steam or Epic Games Store PC copy in addition to the project files. |
| Story progression | Designed for one player to complete the campaign. | No guaranteed cooperative completion of the original story; the framework is described as a sandbox. |
| Connection model | No online or co-op mode. | Server-based play, with rules and activities determined by the host. |
| Setup | Install the game and its required update; a physical copy needs internet access for the Day 1 patch. | Install a separate pre-release framework, match launcher and game builds, and obtain server access. |
| Support and stability | Publisher-supported single-player release. | Unofficial community project whose behavior and compatibility can change. |
The table’s most important distinction is story behavior. A server may let friends meet, move around, or participate in activities together, but that does not turn the single-player quest scripting, saves, and progression into a dependable two-player campaign.
Common expectations that lead to confusion
“My friend can join as a companion, right?”
No. Companions are authored NPCs. Their presence is part of the solo story system and cannot be replaced by a human-controlled player.
“The game is open world, so why is there no online mode?”
An open world describes the environment and how freely one player can explore it. It does not imply networking. Hogwarts Legacy was built and documented as a single-player action RPG, so its open map is not an invitation system.
“Can a mod make the official campaign co-op?”
Do not assume that. Hogwarts MP’s documentation specifically frames the project as a multiplayer sandbox and cautions that it is not a promise of cooperative story completion. Individual servers may offer shared activities, but campaign compatibility is not established by the existence of a multiplayer connection.
“Will the PC mod work on my console?”
No. The documented project requirement is Windows PC. Console editions do not provide the files, launcher, or installation access required by that project.

“Can I use any downloaded copy?”
The project requires a legitimate PC copy from Steam or the Epic Games Store. A pirated or otherwise unauthorized copy does not satisfy that requirement and can create additional security, update, and compatibility risks.
Choosing the right way to play with friends
Choose the official game when you want a reliable story playthrough
Buy and play the official release if your priority is a stable, supported campaign with consistent quests, saves, and platform compatibility. Each friend can create a character and then compare choices, builds, and discoveries outside the game. This is the only route covered by the publisher’s normal support model.
Consider the unofficial PC route only for an experimental shared sandbox
Hogwarts MP may be worth investigating if everyone has Windows PCs, legitimate Steam or Epic copies, compatible builds, and tolerance for pre-release software. Agree in advance on the server, rules, expected activities, and what happens if an update breaks compatibility. Treat it as an optional community experiment, not as a replacement for the official solo campaign.
Use social play if nobody wants unofficial software
- Stream or screen-share a first playthrough and discuss decisions in real time.
- Play separate saves and set friendly challenges, such as specific spell, gear, or exploration goals.
- Compare companion choices, house decisions, puzzles, and completion progress.
- Take turns on one system if you are in the same room, while keeping each player’s save separate.
Buying and setup checklist
Before spending money or downloading an unofficial framework, confirm the following:
- Are you asking for official co-op or merely a shared activity? Only the latter is potentially available through the unofficial PC project.
- Does everyone have the same Windows PC requirement and a legitimate Steam or Epic copy?
- Can all players use the project’s current launcher and game build?
- Does the chosen server actually offer the activities you expect?
- Are you comfortable with pre-release software, changing instructions, and the possibility that official story progress will not carry over?
- Have you backed up saves and checked the project’s current compatibility notes before updating the base game?
For a solo player who wants help exploring the castle, a physical companion reference is a more predictable purchase than unofficial networking. Scholastic’s trade catalog lists Hogwarts Legacy: The Official Game Guide. Edition, seller, price, and regional availability can change, so verify the current listing before buying.

Bottom line for each platform
- PC: The official game is single-player. A separate, unofficial Windows project may provide server-based sandbox play if its requirements and build matching work for you.
- PlayStation: No official online or local co-op mode is available.
- Xbox: No official online or local co-op mode is available.
- Nintendo Switch: No official online or local co-op mode is available.
So the accurate answer to “Can you play a Harry Potter RPG with friends?” is: you cannot play the official Hogwarts Legacy story together through a supported game mode. Friends can share the experience socially, and Windows PC owners can investigate Hogwarts MP as an unofficial sandbox, but that project is separate from the official release and does not promise a complete cooperative campaign.
