Yes. GTA Online supports solo play. Start an Invite Only Session from Story Mode to keep other players out of your lobby, then use activities that accept one player. Rockstar specifically confirms that business content, including Sell missions, is available in private sessions, and that Operation Paper Trail consists of six missions for one to four players.
Privacy does not make every activity a solo activity. Many Freemode Events require a minimum number of participants, and Rockstar states that Time Trials are unavailable in private or solo sessions. The reliable approach is to choose the session type first, then check the player requirement for the activity you want to launch.
What “solo” means in GTA Online
Solo play in GTA Online is not a separate offline mode. You are still entering GTA Online, but you can control who shares the session with you. An Invite Only Session is a private lobby: you leave the current session and enter one where invitations determine who can join. If nobody else is invited, you can play there by yourself.
This distinction matters because a private lobby changes the people present, not the rules built into each activity. A mission designed for one to four players can start with one player. An event that requires several participants can remain unavailable even when the lobby itself is private.

“Solo” can therefore mean two different things:
- Solo session: you are alone in a private or solo lobby.
- Solo-capable activity: the specific mission or activity accepts one player.
You need both conditions for a completely solo run. A private session supplies the first condition; the activity’s own player-count rule determines the second.
How to start an Invite Only Session
Rockstar Games Support’s instructions, last updated May 26, 2026, begin in Story Mode. Follow this sequence:

- Launch GTA V and enter Story Mode.
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Select Online.
- Choose Find New Session.
- Select Invite Only Session.
The game removes you from the current session and loads a new private one. Once it has loaded, do not send invitations if you want to remain alone. Friends or other players can join only if you invite them or otherwise allow them into the session through the game’s online controls.
Why start from Story Mode?
Rockstar’s published path specifically starts in Story Mode. If you are already inside an online lobby, back out to Story Mode before following the menu sequence. Starting from the documented entry point avoids looking for an Invite Only option in the wrong menu.

What the setting does—and does not do
An Invite Only Session controls who shares the lobby. It does not promise that every business mechanic, Freemode Event, challenge, or time-based activity can be completed alone. Treat the private lobby as access control, then verify the activity’s participant rule separately.

Business activity and Sell missions
Rockstar’s July 26, 2022 update notes say that business content, including Sell missions, can be accessed in private sessions. This is the clearest official basis for doing business work without public-session players around you.

A particular job can still impose its own requirements. If a business activity refuses to start, read the on-screen requirement rather than assuming the entire business is blocked or that the private-session feature is broken.
For a player whose priority is uninterrupted business work, the practical sequence is:
- Enter an Invite Only Session using the Story Mode path above.
- Open the relevant business interface or travel to the business location.
- Select the business activity you want to run.
- Confirm the activity’s displayed player requirement before launching.
- If the activity starts, complete it in the private lobby; if it does not, note the specific requirement and choose an activity that accepts one player.
Operation Paper Trail
Rockstar describes Operation Paper Trail as six missions in which players work as IAA field operatives. The published player range is one to four players. Because one player is an accepted minimum, the operation supports a solo run.

The six-mission structure is useful when planning a session: you can approach the operation as a complete campaign-style set rather than assuming that every online mission needs a crew. Start the mission from a session where you are alone, and use the launch screen’s player information as the final check before confirming.
Other activities in private sessions
Rockstar’s statements establish that private sessions can host more than one category of activity, but they do not provide a complete, current catalog of every solo-compatible job. For any activity not specifically covered above, use the game’s displayed player requirement as the deciding evidence.
Activities that still have solo limits
Freemode Events
Rockstar’s Freemode Events guidance says these events are available in private sessions, while also warning that many require a minimum number of participants. A private lobby can therefore make an event available in principle without making it launchable for one person.
Before waiting for an event to begin, inspect its participation requirement. If the event calls for more players than are present, changing from a public lobby to an Invite Only Session will not remove that requirement. You need to meet the stated minimum or select a different activity.
Time Trials
Rockstar Games Support states: “Time Trials are not available in private or solo sessions.” That is an explicit exception, not merely a warning that some events may need more participants. If a Time Trial is your goal, an Invite Only or solo session is the wrong starting point.

The cited support page is titled Freemode Events Information for GTA Online on PS4, Xbox One, and PC and was last updated February 25, 2024. Because platform and game-version rules can change, check the current in-game description when your platform differs from those named systems or when the menu presents a new requirement.

If you want to run a business
Use an Invite Only Session first. Rockstar explicitly allows business content, including Sell missions, in private sessions. Then verify the individual mission’s requirement. This approach keeps the lobby private while preserving access to the business activity that Rockstar identifies.
If you want a structured mission series
Operation Paper Trail is the documented choice with a one-player minimum. Its six missions are designed for one to four players, so you do not need to assemble a crew before starting.
If you want a Freemode Event
Read the event’s participant requirement before committing to a private lobby. Private-session availability does not override a minimum-player rule. If the event requires more participants, invite enough players or select content that accepts one person.

If you want a Time Trial
Do not use a private or solo session. Rockstar expressly excludes Time Trials from those session types. Select a session arrangement that the current activity description permits.
Troubleshooting when solo content will not start
The Invite Only option is missing
Return to Story Mode and repeat Pause Menu > Online > Find New Session > Invite Only Session. That is Rockstar’s documented route. Entering the menus from an existing online session may leave you looking in a different location than the published instructions describe.
The private session loads, but the activity is unavailable
Check whether the activity has a participant minimum. Freemode Events commonly do, and Time Trials are specifically excluded from private and solo sessions. A successful lobby change does not prove that the selected activity supports one player.

Rockstar confirms access to business content in private sessions but does not state that every business mission or mechanic is solo-capable. Read the mission prompt for its own requirement. If it specifies additional players or another condition, follow that instruction rather than treating the session type as the sole cause.
The rules seem different on your platform
The cited Freemode Events support page names PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Do not automatically apply every wording detail to a different platform edition. Compare the current in-game requirement with Rockstar’s current support information for your system.
Common misconceptions
- “Invite Only means every activity works alone.” No. It controls lobby access; participant minimums remain.
- “All business missions are guaranteed to be solo.” Rockstar confirms private-session access to business content, including Sell missions, but does not promise every mission or mechanic.
- “Every Freemode Event is blocked in a private lobby.” No. Rockstar says events are available in private sessions, although many require minimum participation.
- “Time Trials should appear if I wait long enough.” They are explicitly unavailable in private or solo sessions.
- “The examples form a complete solo-content list.” They do not. The official statements identify supported examples and limits, not an exhaustive catalog of all current activities.
What to check before you commit to a solo session
- Start from Story Mode so the documented Invite Only path is available.
- Decide whether you need a private lobby or an activity that requires other participants.
- Read the player range shown for the mission or event.
- Remember that one-player support is explicit for Operation Paper Trail, while other activities need their own confirmation.
- Exclude Time Trials when planning private or solo play.
- For platform-specific questions, rely on the current in-game prompt and support information for that platform.
Bottom line
GTA Online is playable solo, and an Invite Only Session is the practical way to keep your lobby private.
