Short answer: the original Grand Theft Auto IV PlayStation release is the PlayStation 3 version. A GTA IV PS3 disc is not a normal backward-compatible game on either PS4 or PS5, and the cited Sony and Rockstar materials do not identify an official PS4 or PS5 edition or download. To play the original PlayStation version, you need a working PS3 and a genuine GTA IV PS3 disc.
There are other ways to play GTA IV, including Xbox and PC versions, but those are separate platform routes. The PS5/PS4 release called Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is also a different product and does not contain GTA IV.
What is the official PlayStation version of GTA IV?
Grand Theft Auto IV was released for PlayStation 3. Rockstar’s official manual identifies the product as a PlayStation 3 game and carries the copyright line “Grand Theft Auto IV © 2008 Rockstar Games.” That is the original PlayStation product you will see on used-disc listings, sometimes described as the standard game or as part of the Complete Edition.

There is no separate PS4 game identified in the official Sony and Rockstar material used for this compatibility question. Consequently, a listing that says “PS4/PS5 compatible” is not proof that it is an official GTA IV release. Check the exact product, platform logo and publisher information before paying.

Why PS5 backward compatibility does not make the PS3 disc work
Sony describes PS5 backward compatibility as support for “the overwhelming majority of PlayStation®4 games.” That is a PS4-to-PS5 pathway; it is not a general promise that PS5 can emulate every earlier PlayStation generation.
A PS3 disc and a PS4 disc are different products. The PS5 can use an eligible PS4 disc in a disc-equipped console, but inserting a PS3 GTA IV disc does not convert it into a PS4 game. The PS5 Digital Edition has an additional limitation: Sony states that “PS4 game discs can’t be used with the PlayStation®5 Digital Edition.” A PS3 disc therefore cannot be used in the Digital Edition either, and the Digital Edition has no disc drive with which to read it.
Rockstar’s backward-compatibility announcement covers selected newer Rockstar games with PS4 and Xbox One versions that can run on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It does not announce a PS4 or PS5 edition of GTA IV. Compatibility announcements for other Rockstar titles should not be interpreted as a GTA IV announcement.

Not as an officially identified native PS4 release in the cited catalog material. The original PlayStation product is the PS3 version, and a PS3 disc cannot be inserted into a PS4 and treated as a PS4 game. A digital PS4 download would require an official PS4 product or entitlement; the cited Sony and Rockstar information does not identify one for GTA IV.

Be especially careful with store searches and marketplace listings. A result may refer to a different Grand Theft Auto game, a soundtrack, an add-on, a streaming or remote-play arrangement, or an inaccurate seller description. Verify the exact title and platform rather than relying on a search snippet or a generic “backward compatible” label.
Can you play a GTA IV PS3 disc on PS5?
No. The disc is a PS3 release, while Sony’s documented PS5 compatibility route is primarily for PS4 games. The answer is the same for the standard PS5 with a disc drive and the PS5 Digital Edition; the latter cannot read physical discs at all.

The clearest PlayStation option: use a PS3
What you need
- A working PlayStation 3 console with a functioning optical drive.
- A genuine GTA IV PS3 disc. Used listings may call it the original game or the Complete Edition.
- A television or monitor and the required PS3 power, video and controller accessories.
- The correct regional version if you plan to use downloadable content.
How to set it up
- Confirm that the listing is for the PlayStation 3 version, not a PS4, PS5 or unrelated Grand Theft Auto product.
- Inspect the disc for deep scratches, cracks or damage and confirm that the seller includes the correct game disc rather than only a case or manual.
- Connect the PS3 to your display, sign in if required, and install any system updates that the console itself offers.
- Insert the GTA IV disc and allow the PS3 to read and install the game data it requests.
- Start the game from the disc icon. If you bought a Complete Edition, use the included content only after confirming that the disc and downloadable-content regions match.
This route gives you the original PlayStation 3 experience. It does not make the game transferable to a PS4 or PS5 account, and buying the disc does not create a current-generation digital entitlement.
Other platform routes
Xbox
Rockstar’s compatibility announcement establishes Xbox as a platform family with backward-compatible Rockstar titles, but the fact that some Rockstar games run on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S does not by itself confirm GTA IV’s status on every Xbox model or storefront. If Xbox is your preferred route, check the current Xbox catalog for the exact GTA IV edition, console generation and purchase method before buying. A disc, a digital license and a subscription catalog entry can have different requirements.

PC
The PC release is a separate version from the PS3 game. It requires a compatible Windows installation, the appropriate PC storefront or launcher entitlement, and hardware that meets the version’s current requirements. A PS3 disc cannot be used as a PC license. Check the current PC storefront for availability and account requirements at the time of purchase.
Streaming, remote play and unofficial methods
Remote play from a PS3, unofficial emulation and modified consoles are not the same as an official PS4 or PS5 release. They can involve extra hardware, configuration, performance limitations, account restrictions or legal questions. They also do not change the format of the GTA IV PS3 disc. For a straightforward, supported PlayStation setup, use the PS3 route.
Do not confuse GTA IV with the PS4/PS5 Trilogy release
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is listed for PS4 and PS5, but it is a separate compilation. It is not a remaster or port of GTA IV. Buying the Trilogy does not provide Niko Bellic’s GTA IV campaign, its Liberty City setting or GTA IV’s associated downloadable episodes.

Read the full title and included-games list before checkout. A product page that contains “Grand Theft Auto,” “PS4” or “PS5” in its title may still be for a different game.

Region locking and downloadable content
Rockstar Support states that “GTAIV is region-locked.” This matters most when you import a used disc or buy downloadable content from a different PlayStation Network region.
Check the game region
- Compare the disc, case and product code with the country or region of your PlayStation account.
- Do not assume that an imported disc will accept every digital add-on sold in your local store.
- For the Complete Edition or separate downloadable episodes, confirm that the content is intended for the same regional release as the base game.
What a region mismatch can look like
The base game may start while an add-on fails to appear, refuses to install, or is reported as incompatible. Rebuying the same DLC from the correct account region may be required; changing console language or reinstalling the game does not usually solve a product-region mismatch.
Buying checklist for a used GTA IV copy
- Confirm the platform: the listing must explicitly identify PlayStation 3 if you want the original PlayStation version.
- Confirm the contents: determine whether it is the standard release or Complete Edition and whether all required discs are included.
- Check condition: ask for clear photos of the disc surface and product code when the listing is unclear.
- Check region: match the disc and any planned DLC to your PlayStation Network account region.
- Check the console: make sure your PS3 reads other discs and has a working controller before assuming the game disc is defective.
- Ignore unsupported labels: “PS4/PS5 compatible” is not sufficient evidence without an officially identified GTA IV PS4 or PS5 release.

Common mistakes and fixes
“The box says PlayStation, so it should work on PS5.”
Older PlayStation branding does not mean cross-generation compatibility. Look for the specific platform printed on the product. GTA IV’s original PlayStation disc is PS3.
“I found GTA IV in a PS4 search result.”
Open the product page and inspect the edition, platform, publisher and included content. Search results can group unrelated Grand Theft Auto products or seller-created listings.

“The game works, but my DLC does not.”
Check the region of the base game, the DLC and the account that purchased it. GTA IV is region-locked, so mismatched regions can prevent add-ons from working.
“The PS5 has a disc drive, so it should read any PlayStation disc.”
The drive is not the same as universal backward compatibility. PS5 support is documented primarily for eligible PS4 games; it does not establish PS3-disc support for GTA IV.
Bottom line for PS5 and PS4 owners
There is no officially identified native PS4 or PS5 version of GTA IV in the cited Sony and Rockstar material. A GTA IV PS3 disc will not become playable merely because it is inserted into a PS5, and the PS5 Digital Edition cannot read it at all. For the original PlayStation experience, buy a genuine GTA IV PS3 disc and use a working PS3, taking Rockstar’s region lock into account.
