Yes. Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) for PlayStation 5. The Rockstar Store currently lists November 19, 2026 as the release date, with pre-loading scheduled to begin November 12. However, Rockstar and PlayStation have not published an official GTA 6 download size, installed size, or required free-space figure in the listings reviewed on October 13, 2026. Any exact GB number circulating in rumor posts should therefore be treated as unconfirmed.
You can prepare your PS5 by checking available console storage, archiving games you do not play, and considering a compatible M.2 SSD if you need more directly usable space. A USB extended-storage drive can hold PS5 game data, but a PS5 game must be moved back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before it can be played.
What is officially confirmed about GTA 6 on PS5?
PlayStation 5 is a listed platform
Rockstar’s platforms and editions information lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for GTA 6. The Rockstar Store also has a PlayStation 5 product listing. The reviewed support article was last updated August 18, 2026. No PS4 version appears in that platform information, so owners of older PlayStation hardware should not assume compatibility.

PlayStation 5 is not merely a backward-compatibility possibility in the listing: it is a named platform for the game. That means a PS5 owner is using the intended current-generation console version, subject to the final release information Rockstar publishes.

The listed dates are November 12 and November 19, 2026
The Rockstar Store listing reviewed October 13, 2026, gave November 19, 2026 as the release date and November 12, 2026 as the start of pre-loading. Both dates were still in the future at that review. Release schedules can change, so check the Rockstar Store listing again before pre-loading and on launch day.
Pre-loading is not the same as being able to play early. It normally allows the files to be downloaded before release, while the game remains locked until Rockstar’s launch time and any required system or title updates are applied.
No official GTA 6 storage number has been published
The official Rockstar and PlayStation listings reviewed for this article do not state how many gigabytes GTA 6 requires. They do not provide a confirmed download size, installed size, or minimum free-space target. Consequently, there is no authoritative answer yet to the frequently searched question, “How many GB is GTA 6 on PS5?”

A final number can change between a store listing, a pre-load package, a day-one update, and the space the PS5 temporarily needs while installing. Until Rockstar publishes the figure, the only accurate answer is that the requirement is not stated.
Why the missing number matters
Download size and installed size are different
A store may show the size of a downloadable package, while the console ultimately uses a different amount after decompression, installation, patches, and reserved data. A pre-load can also be delivered in more than one package. Treating one unverified number as the permanent space requirement can leave a console short of room when the installation process starts.
Free space is not the same as the game’s final footprint
Even after Rockstar announces a game size, keep some additional headroom rather than filling the drive to its last remaining gigabyte. The PS5 may need working space to download, unpack, verify, and install files. The exact amount of temporary space for GTA 6 has not been published, so do not invent a “safe” buffer in gigabytes. Use the requirement shown by the PlayStation Store or the on-console installation screen when those figures become available.
Fast loading claims do not reveal capacity
In a June 24, 2026 PlayStation Blog post, Mary Yee, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote: “Thanks to the close partnership between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5 by taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features to deliver a deeply engaging single-player experience when it launches on November 19.” The same post says the game leverages the PS5 ultra-high-speed SSD for near-instant load times. That is a performance statement; it does not disclose how much storage the game consumes.

Where a PS5 can store GTA 6
PlayStation supports three relevant storage locations. Their practical differences are more important than any unconfirmed rumor about the game’s eventual size.
| Storage location | Can hold GTA 6 data? | Can launch the PS5 version directly? | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 console storage | Yes | Yes | This is the built-in location used for installing and playing PS5 games. |
| USB extended storage | Yes | No | PS5 game data can be archived there, but it must be moved back to console storage or compatible M.2 SSD storage before playing. |
| Compatible M.2 SSD | Yes | Yes, when the drive meets PlayStation’s current requirements | This is an optional expansion route for game and app storage. Check the latest compatibility specifications before buying. |
The table describes storage behavior documented by PlayStation. It does not mean GTA 6 requires an additional drive. Rockstar has not said that a separate SSD is mandatory.
How to check and prepare your PS5’s built-in storage
1. Check the space currently available
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Storage, then Console Storage.
- Review the free-space figure and open Games and Apps to see which titles use the most room.
System-software labels can change slightly with updates, but the Storage section is the place to verify the live figure on your own console. Record the available space shortly before pre-loading instead of relying on an old screenshot or a number remembered from another PS5.
2. Remove or archive games safely
Use Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps to select games you no longer need installed and delete them. Deleting a game normally removes its installed files, not your separate saved-data files, but review the confirmation screen carefully. If a title is available in your Game Library, you can download it again later when needed.

Saved data is managed separately under the PS5’s saved-data settings, and deleting it can remove progress that is not backed up. If you use cloud saves through your PlayStation subscription, verify synchronization before making changes; otherwise, copy important saves to supported backup storage according to PlayStation’s current instructions.
3. Use USB extended storage as an archive
A USB extended-storage drive is useful when you want to keep a game without occupying built-in space. Connect a compatible drive, format it as extended storage if the PS5 requests that step, and use the game’s options menu to move data. The important limitation is that PS5 game data stored on USB cannot be launched directly. Before playing GTA 6, you would have to move its data back to console storage or to a compatible M.2 SSD.
This makes USB storage a transfer and archive solution rather than a way to bypass the PS5’s internal or M.2 performance requirements. Moving a large game back can take time, so it is less convenient if you expect to switch into GTA 6 frequently.

4. Consider an M.2 SSD only if you need more playable space
PlayStation supports installing a commercially available, compatible M.2 SSD for additional game and app storage. Games installed there can be used directly when the drive meets the current PS5 specifications. Compatibility is not determined only by the drive’s advertised capacity: check PlayStation’s current requirements for interface, physical dimensions, cooling, and performance before purchasing.
Recommended Free Tools
An M.2 SSD is optional. Nothing in the reviewed GTA 6 listings says that players must buy one, and no capacity recommendation can be made until Rockstar publishes the game’s requirement. If your built-in storage is sufficient, installing the game there is the simplest approach. If you routinely keep many large PS5 games installed, an M.2 expansion can reduce the need to move titles from USB, but choose it for your overall library rather than for an unconfirmed GTA 6 number.

Recheck the listing first
On or near November 12, open the GTA 6 product page in the PlayStation Store and compare its displayed download information with the free space shown under Settings > Storage. This is when a confirmed package size or installation requirement may become visible. If the date or listing has changed, follow the current store information rather than the earlier November 12 and November 19 schedule.
Install through the console’s normal download flow
- Open the GTA 6 product page in the PlayStation Store on your PS5.
- Select the pre-load or download option if it is available for your purchase or edition.
- Confirm the destination shown by the console, normally console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD.
- Leave enough free space for the requirement displayed by the console, including any temporary installation space it requests.
- After downloading, allow the PS5 to complete installation and apply any required update. The title should remain unavailable until the official release time.
If the store reports insufficient space, canceling other downloads will not by itself remove installed games. Delete or move an existing title, then retry. If you archived GTA 6 on USB, move it back before launch; the PS5 will not run that PS5 installation directly from USB.
Check for updates after installation
A day-one update can change the installed footprint and may be required to start the game. After the base installation completes, highlight GTA 6 on the home screen, press the controller’s options button, and choose Check for Update when that command is available. Keep the console connected long enough for the update and any license checks to finish.

Rumor posts often present a precise figure, but precision is not proof. A leaked screenshot may show a temporary download package, a placeholder, a regional listing, or an estimate that excludes updates. A number inferred from the size of another open-world game is not evidence about GTA 6.
- Prefer a number displayed on the official Rockstar Store or PlayStation Store listing.
- Check the date: a figure can change as the publisher replaces a placeholder with the final package.
- Distinguish download size, installed size, and the free-space requirement shown during installation.
- Look for an explicit statement from Rockstar or PlayStation rather than a reposted image without context.
- Do not treat the PS5’s advertised SSD speed or a game’s visual scope as a storage measurement.
Until one of those official sources provides a figure, reporting a specific GB requirement would mislead readers. The responsible preparation is to make room based on the number your console actually displays during pre-loading.
What PS5 owners should plan for now
- Confirm that your console is a PS5 model covered by Rockstar’s platform listing.
- Check Settings > Storage > Console Storage and note your current free space.
- Remove games you can redownload or move infrequently played PS5 titles to USB extended storage.
- Keep important saved data separate and backed up before deleting anything.
- If you need a permanent expansion, evaluate a PlayStation-compatible M.2 SSD against the current official specifications; do not buy one solely because a rumor quotes a GTA 6 size.
- Recheck the Rockstar Store and PlayStation Store around November 12, 2026 for the final pre-load information.
The confirmed answer today is therefore straightforward: GTA 6 is listed for PS5, with November 19, 2026 currently shown as the release date and November 12 as the pre-load date. The amount of storage it will require has not yet been officially quantified, so wait for the final listing or the PS5’s installation screen before deciding how much space you need.
