No. The PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto VI can be stored on a USB external drive, but it cannot launch from that drive. When you want to play, you must copy the game back to the PS5 console storage. A compatible internal M.2 SSD installed in the PS5 is different: PS5 games can launch directly from it.
What the rule means for GTA 6
PlayStation treats USB extended storage as a holding area for PS5 games, not as a launch location. You can move a large game from the console to a compatible USB drive to free internal space, then copy it back later. The copy is local; you do not normally need to download the entire game again just because it was moved to USB.
PlayStation states the limitation plainly: “PlayStation®5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage, so make sure to copy PS5® game data back to your console storage when you want to play the game again.” That rule applies to the PS5 edition of GTA VI. Connecting the drive, changing the default installation location, or leaving the game on USB does not bypass it.

A conventional USB hard-disk drive and a USB solid-state drive can both serve as external USB extended storage if they meet PlayStation’s requirements. Neither type can directly run a PS5 game. The restriction is about the USB-storage interface and PS5 software rules, not merely whether the external device uses magnetic disks or flash memory.

GTA VI’s current PS5 status
The official PlayStation Store listing identifies Grand Theft Auto VI as a PS5 version published by Rockstar Games. It lists PS5 Pro Enhanced support and a November 19, 2026 release date. A PlayStation announcement dated June 24, 2026 also says the game will play best on PS5 and launches on November 19.
Those listings describe a PS5 release, not a PS4 release. Therefore, the PS4 exception to the USB rule does not give GTA VI a way to run from an external drive. If Rockstar announces additional platforms or editions later, storage behavior would need to be checked for that specific edition; the PS5 version follows the PS5 USB rule.
How to move GTA VI to USB extended storage
Use the PS5’s built-in storage-management commands. Formatting a drive as USB extended storage erases data already on that drive, so back up anything important before setting it up.

1. Prepare the external drive
- Connect the drive to a compatible USB port on the PS5. Use a SuperSpeed USB device intended for extended storage.
- Open Settings, then Storage, and choose the USB extended-storage option to format the drive if it has not already been prepared for the console.
- Confirm the erase warning only after checking that the drive contains no files you need. Formatting changes the device into PS5 extended storage.
Once the drive is formatted, the PS5 can use it to hold PS5 game data. The game remains associated with your console and account; the drive is not a substitute for the PS5’s internal system storage when the game is running.

2. Move the installed game from the console
- Open Game Library.
- Highlight GTA VI after it is installed.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Select Move Games and Apps.
- Choose the USB extended-storage destination and confirm the move.
The console transfers the installed files rather than creating a playable USB version. Do not disconnect the drive while the move is in progress. Interrupting a transfer can leave the installation incomplete and require the console to repair or repeat it.
3. Copy GTA VI back before playing
- Connect the same USB extended-storage drive to the PS5.
- Open Game Library and locate the game in the USB-storage section.
- Highlight GTA VI and press Options.
- Choose Copy when the game is listed on USB storage, then select the PS5 console storage as the destination.
- Wait for the copy to finish before starting the game.
The exact labels can vary slightly with system software revisions, but the essential sequence is to use Move Games and Apps for placing the game on USB and Copy for returning it to console storage. If the game icon still shows the USB location, the copy has not completed and the PS5 version is not ready to launch.
USB extended-storage requirements
PlayStation’s current guidance specifies a compatible SuperSpeed USB storage device with a minimum capacity of 250 GB and a maximum capacity of 8 TB. A drive outside those limits is not an appropriate choice for PS5 extended storage, even if it works with a computer.
- Capacity: 250 GB minimum; 8 TB maximum under Sony’s stated guidance.
- Connection: SuperSpeed USB storage compatible with the PS5.
- Preparation: The PS5 must format the device as USB extended storage, which erases existing data.
- Use case: Store PS5 games and copy them back; do not expect direct PS5-game launching.
The capacity range describes what the console supports, not how much free space GTA VI will require. No official install-size figure for GTA VI is established in the information available here, so do not plan around an alleged size from an unverified screenshot or social-media post. Leave additional free space for patches and other games rather than filling a drive to its nominal capacity.

Why an internal M.2 SSD is different
A compatible M.2 SSD installed in the PS5’s internal expansion bay is treated as console storage. PlayStation allows PS5 games to be downloaded, copied, and launched from that installed expansion SSD. GTA VI can therefore remain on an M.2 drive while you play, avoiding the repeated USB-to-console transfer required by an external drive.
Installing an M.2 SSD is a hardware task: the console must be powered down, the correct expansion cover removed, and a drive that meets Sony’s compatibility requirements installed and formatted by the PS5. The exact compatible dimensions, interface and cooling requirements should be checked against the current PlayStation support guidance for your console model before buying. Those requirements are separate from the 250 GB-to-8 TB USB range and should not be inferred from it.
An M.2 expansion drive also consumes money and installation effort. The available evidence does not establish a single current price, guaranteed transfer time or recommended capacity for GTA VI, so comparisons should use the seller’s current price and the drive’s published specifications rather than an assumed figure.

USB external storage versus an internal M.2 SSD
| Comparison | USB extended storage | Installed internal M.2 SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Can launch the PS5 version of GTA VI directly? | No. Copy the game to PS5 console storage before playing. | Yes, when the SSD is compatible and correctly installed. |
| Main purpose | Archive and transport installed games to free internal space. | Expand usable console storage for downloading, copying and launching PS5 games. |
| Interface and compatibility | SuperSpeed USB; Sony guidance states 250 GB minimum and 8 TB maximum. | Must meet the PS5’s current M.2 expansion requirements; exact requirements depend on the console guidance and drive. |
| What happens when you want to play? | Copy GTA VI from USB to console storage first. | Start the game from the expansion SSD without that USB return trip. |
| Installation effort | Connect and format; formatting erases the drive. | Open the console, install the module, then format it in the PS5. |
| Cost information | No single price is established; depends on capacity, interface and whether it is an HDD or SSD. | No single price is established; add the cost of a compatible M.2 SSD and any required heatsink. |
Which setup fits your playing pattern?
Choose USB storage if you need an archive
USB extended storage is practical when you have more installed games than the console can hold and only play some of them regularly. Move rarely used titles to the drive, keep the games you play most often on console storage, and copy a title back before a gaming session. It is also useful when you want to avoid downloading a large game again after removing it from the internal drive.

Choose an M.2 SSD if you rotate several PS5 games
An internal expansion SSD is better when you expect to launch multiple large PS5 games frequently. The extra installation work and purchase cost buy a simpler routine: install or move the game to the M.2 volume and launch it there. You still need to manage free space and updates, but you do not have to perform a USB copy each time you switch games.
Use both when capacity is the main problem
Some owners use an M.2 SSD for active PS5 games and USB storage as a cold-storage library. That arrangement keeps frequently played titles on launch-capable storage while preserving less-used installations externally. It does not change the rule for GTA VI: a copy on USB remains an archive copy until returned to console storage or moved to a compatible internal M.2 SSD.

No independent benchmark or GTA VI installation-size figure has been published in the evidence available for this guide. Consequently, there is no defensible number of minutes to promise for moving the game. The elapsed time will depend on the amount of data, the USB drive’s sustained performance, the PS5’s interface and whether other storage activity is running.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePlan transfers when you do not need the console immediately. Keep the PS5 powered and the drive connected until the progress indicator finishes. Do not unplug the drive during a move or copy, and use the PS5’s eject or disconnect command before physically removing it. If you move a game while an update is pending, the console may need to apply the update after the game is back on launch-capable storage.

A USB copy is not a second independent installation that can be launched on another PS5 without the usual account, license and system requirements. Treat it as storage managed by the console. If the drive is reformatted, damaged or disconnected, the game data on it may become unavailable even though your entitlement remains associated with your account.
Common mistakes and fixes
Starting the game from the USB icon
Symptom: The game appears in the library, but the PS5 asks you to copy it or reports that it cannot start. Fix: Open the USB-storage location, highlight the game, choose Options, select Copy, and wait until the destination is console storage.
Buying a drive that is too small or too large
Symptom: The PS5 will not format the device as extended storage. Fix: Verify that the device is SuperSpeed USB storage within Sony’s stated 250 GB minimum and 8 TB maximum. Capacity printed on the package is nominal, so usable space will be lower after formatting.
Formatting before backing up files
Symptom: Personal computer files disappear after setup. Fix: Formatting is destructive. Copy personal files elsewhere first; if the drive has already been formatted, recovery is not guaranteed.
Assuming a faster external SSD changes the rule
Symptom: You purchase a USB SSD expecting GTA VI to launch directly from it. Fix: USB SSDs can improve storage handling, but the PS5 launch restriction still applies. Use an installed compatible M.2 SSD for direct launching.
Disconnecting the drive casually
Symptom: Games disappear or the PS5 reports storage errors after reconnecting the device. Fix: Stop any transfer, use the console’s safe removal control, reconnect the same drive, and allow the PS5 to check or repair storage if prompted.
Bottom line for GTA VI owners
Use a PS5-compatible external USB hard drive or SSD to store GTA VI and reclaim internal space, but do not buy one expecting direct play. The PS5 version must be copied back to console storage before launch. If you want GTA VI to stay on expanded storage and start without that transfer, install a PS5-compatible internal M.2 SSD and use that as the game’s active location.
