Yes. A PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X|S can run both Grand Theft Auto VI and the current Call of Duty comparison, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Rockstar lists GTA VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, while Activision lists Black Ops 7 for those consoles as well as older systems and PC. PS4 and Xbox One can run Black Ops 7, but they are not listed for GTA VI, so they cannot satisfy the two-game requirement.
The console overlap is PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
The answer depends on which Call of Duty you mean. Call of Duty is a long-running series, so this comparison uses Black Ops 7, the current title identified in Activision’s platform information. The hardware generation that officially overlaps with GTA VI is Sony’s PlayStation 5 family and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S family.
| Console | GTA VI listing | Black Ops 7 listing | Runs both? |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Xbox Series X|S | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| PlayStation 4 | No | Yes | No |
| Xbox One | No | Yes | No |
| PC | Not included in Rockstar’s GTA VI announcement | Yes | No confirmed overlap |
That table answers the buying question without relying on frame-rate claims or rumors: choose a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S if you want one console for both games.

GTA VI platforms and date
Rockstar’s 2026 Newswire announcement says, “Grand Theft Auto VI is a single player experience, coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.” The dated release information identifies November 19, 2026, and names only the current PlayStation and Xbox generations in that announcement. It does not list PS4, Xbox One, or PC.

Black Ops 7 platforms
Activision’s 2025 platform announcement says, “Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is scheduled for release on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation® 5, PlayStation® 4, and on PC via Xbox PC, Battle.net and Steam.” This is why older consoles remain suitable for Black Ops 7 alone, but not for the two-game combination.
Cross-generation editions
Activision’s editions guide explains that Xbox Play Anywhere provides access to the current-generation Xbox Series X|S version, while PlayStation cross-gen editions provide both the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 versions. Those edition descriptions concern Black Ops 7. They do not add GTA VI support to the older consoles.
Choosing a PS5 for both games
A PS5 meets the platform requirement for each title. The official listings identify PS5 as a supported platform for GTA VI and Black Ops 7, so you do not need a separate console generation for either game.

When buying a PS5, decide whether you need a disc drive or intend to buy every game digitally. The platform announcement establishes PS5 support, but it does not state whether every GTA VI or Black Ops 7 edition will be available in every physical format or region. A disc-capable model gives you the option of retail discs and used copies; a digital-only model requires downloads from the console’s store. Check the exact edition and regional listing before paying, especially if you are buying a bundle.
Storage and downloads
Both games must be installed, and large modern releases can also require patches. The official platform statements do not publish a definitive combined storage figure, so do not reserve a particular number of gigabytes based on an estimate. Instead, check the product page for each edition and leave additional free space for updates. If the console reports insufficient space, remove an unused game, move content to supported external storage where the console permits it, or reinstall after clearing space; the required install size can change as publishers issue updates.
Controller and platform features
PS5 support confirms that both games have native PS5 versions. It does not, by itself, guarantee identical controller features, visual modes, or accessibility options between the two titles. Those features are controlled by each publisher and can vary by game and edition. Look at the individual game’s settings and accessibility information rather than assuming that a feature advertised for one title applies to the other.

Choosing Xbox Series X or Series S
The Xbox Series X|S designation covers both current-generation Xbox consoles, and Rockstar’s GTA VI announcement names the family explicitly. Activision lists Black Ops 7 for the same family, so either Series X or Series S is within the confirmed overlap.
Series X versus Series S
The platform evidence confirms compatibility, not a performance winner. It does not provide frame-rate, resolution, graphics-mode, or storage-size comparisons between Series X and Series S. Choose between them using the specifications and price of the exact model available in your region, then verify the game’s edition page. Do not buy a Series S expecting a disc drive: confirm the console’s media format before choosing physical software.
Xbox Play Anywhere and editions
Activision’s editions guide states that Xbox Play Anywhere gives access to the current-generation Xbox Series X|S version. Read the edition description carefully to determine what your purchase includes and whether it grants the version you want. That guidance applies to Black Ops 7; it is not a statement that GTA VI supports Play Anywhere or PC access.
Storage and downloads
As with PS5, the official platform announcements do not state a final installation size for either game. Plan for two full installs plus updates, and check the Microsoft Store listing for the current requirement before downloading. If an install fails for lack of space, uninstall an unused title or move eligible games to supported external storage, then retry the installation. Keep the console connected long enough for required updates to finish before assuming the game itself is incompatible.
Why PS4 and Xbox One are not enough
Black Ops 7 is listed for PS4 and Xbox One, which can make an older console appear to be a cheaper way to play both games. GTA VI changes that calculation. Rockstar’s announcement names PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, not the previous generation. Therefore, a PS4 or Xbox One can meet the Call of Duty requirement but fails the GTA VI requirement.
A cross-gen Black Ops 7 purchase does not bridge the gap. Activision’s cross-gen information explains which versions are included for that game; it cannot create a PS4 or Xbox One version of GTA VI. If GTA VI is the reason for your purchase, start with current-generation hardware.

What to check before buying
- Confirm the console family. The box or store page should say PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S. A PS4 or Xbox One label does not meet the GTA VI requirement.
- Confirm the game edition. For Black Ops 7, check whether the listing is a current-generation, cross-gen, or Xbox Play Anywhere edition. For GTA VI, check that the listing is for your console and region.
- Choose physical or digital intentionally. A physical purchase requires compatible disc hardware; a digital purchase requires an account, a download, and sufficient free storage. The platform announcements do not guarantee that every format is sold in every market.
- Check storage before downloading. Use the live store pages for the current install requirements. Leave room for patches rather than filling the drive with the first installation.
- Check online requirements for the mode you intend to use. Rockstar describes GTA VI in its announcement as a single-player experience. Black Ops 7 includes platform-dependent online features, and console online-access rules can change by service and region, so verify the current requirement for multiplayer on the platform you choose.
- Check the release status and regional date. Rockstar’s announced GTA VI date is November 19, 2026. Store availability, time-zone release timing, bundles, and local ratings can differ, so use the store serving your account.
Do you need one copy on each console?
If you own one PS5, you can install the PS5 versions of both games on that console. The same is true for one Xbox Series X or Series S. Owning multiple consoles is not required merely because the games come from different publishers. A second console becomes relevant only if different people need to play simultaneously, if you want separate accounts, or if you choose to keep one console in another room.
Licensing still matters. Digital purchases are normally tied to the purchasing platform account and its sharing rules, while a disc generally needs to remain available in the console when you play. The official platform lists confirm compatibility, but they do not define account-sharing, simultaneous-play, or family-console policies; read the current platform terms for those details.
Performance, cross-play, and future features
There is no official platform evidence here that establishes a definitive PS5-versus-Xbox performance winner for both games. Avoid treating an unverified frame-rate, resolution, or graphics claim as a purchasing guarantee. Performance can differ by title, update, display, and selected graphics mode.

A game may support one, both, or neither, and the rules can differ between campaign, cooperative, and competitive modes. Check each publisher’s current support documentation if playing with friends on another platform is important to you.
Rockstar’s announcement describes GTA VI as a single-player experience. Do not assume that a future online mode, if announced separately, will have the same subscription, cross-play, or progression rules as the launch experience. Treat any later feature as a separate announcement that needs its own confirmation.
Bottom-line buying advice
For the simplest one-console setup, buy a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S and verify the exact editions in your region. Choose PS5 if you prefer Sony’s ecosystem, or choose an Xbox Series model if Xbox account features and the Play Anywhere edition path suit you. The official information does not justify declaring one the universal winner. What it does establish is the compatibility boundary: current-generation PS5 and Xbox Series hardware can cover both GTA VI and Black Ops 7, while PS4 and Xbox One cannot.
