Yes—GTA 5 (Grand Theft Auto V) has a complete solo Story Mode. You do not normally need to play with other people, and on PC Rockstar says Story Mode generally works without an internet connection after setup.
There is an important current-generation console exception: Rockstar’s support guidance, updated November 11, 2025, says GTA Online is required to play GTAV Story Mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The practical answer therefore depends on your platform, edition and account entitlement.

Rockstar summarizes the PC position as: “Story Mode generally does not require an internet connection to play.” That statement is qualified by the need for a connection for Online, some cloud functions and game updates. See Rockstar’s PC offline-launch instructions.

For current-generation consoles, Rockstar states: “GTA Online is required to play GTAV Story Mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.” The support article was last updated November 11, 2025; access rules can change, so verify your platform before buying or troubleshooting.

Story Mode and GTA Online are separate modes
What Story Mode contains
Story Mode is the single-player campaign. You play through its missions and activities by yourself, switching among the campaign’s protagonists as the game allows. Other characters are controlled by the game, not by live players. Your progress is tied to the Story Mode save system rather than to a shared GTA Online character.
What GTA Online contains
GTA Online is the connected multiplayer component. It requires an internet connection and uses separate characters, progression, activities and services. Choosing Story Mode does not silently place you in a public session, and choosing GTA Online is not necessary merely because the game package includes it.
Rockstar’s PS5 store listing distinguishes between a GTAV edition containing both Story Mode and GTA Online and a standalone GTA Online product with Story Mode offered as an in-game upgrade. Read the edition description carefully at the official PS5 listing; do not infer that every listing grants the same entitlement.

How to play GTA 5 Story Mode offline on PC
Offline play is a setup-and-maintenance process rather than a way to bypass activation. Complete the first authentication while connected, then use the launcher’s supported offline behavior.
- Install the game while online. Download GTAV and the Rockstar Games Launcher from your legitimate PC storefront or installation source. Allow the installation to finish completely.
- Sign in and activate the entitlement. Rockstar requires a Rockstar Games account on PC for installation. Sign in to the account that owns the game and let the launcher confirm the license.
- Allow updates and initial synchronization. Start GTAV once while connected so required game files, launcher updates and available save synchronization can complete.
- Select Story Mode. From the GTAV entry, launch the single-player Story Mode rather than GTA Online. Rockstar’s offline-launch article describes the supported launcher process.
- Use offline mode only after the launcher has prepared the game. If the launcher offers its offline launch option, follow that instruction. The offline path is intended for Story Mode; it cannot create an offline GTA Online session.
- Reconnect when the launcher asks. Periodic entitlement checks, cloud-save synchronization and updates may require an internet connection. Rockstar explains that some offline capabilities depend on the launcher having previously validated the installation; its broader guidance is available in Playing games offline from the Rockstar Games Launcher.
Offline mode does not mean that every PC function remains available. GTA Online, online services and any operation that must contact Rockstar’s servers remain unavailable until you reconnect.
PC account, verification and cloud-save requirements
Rockstar’s account guidance says a Rockstar Games account is required on PC for installation, online play and certain online features. That requirement is different from the console Story Mode rule: on consoles, Rockstar says a Rockstar Games account is not required for Story Mode, although some online features require one. PC installations can also need periodic entitlement verification. A failed check does not necessarily mean that Story Mode has been removed; it may indicate that the launcher cannot confirm ownership at that moment. Rockstar documents this process in Periodic Entitlement Verification for GTAV on PC.
- Keep the launcher and game updated before deliberately going offline.
- Use the same Rockstar account that originally activated the copy.
- Reconnect before changing computers or relying on a cloud save that has not synchronized.
- Do not expect online characters, GTA Online businesses or live-service features to load in Story Mode.
Why PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are different
On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the current Rockstar support rule links Story Mode access to GTA Online. This does not turn Story Mode into multiplayer or require other players in the campaign. It means the account must have the relevant Online entitlement for the game to start or continue Story Mode on those platforms.
Check which product you own
Current listings can separate the products. One GTAV edition includes both Story Mode and GTA Online. Another listing may sell GTA Online by itself and offer Story Mode as a paid in-game upgrade. A console owner who bought only the standalone Online product should not assume that Story Mode is included automatically.

Watch for temporary access
Rockstar specifically warns that players who obtained Story Mode while accessing GTA Online through a free trial or a subscription such as GTA+, Game Pass or PlayStation Plus may need to purchase GTA Online to resume Story Mode access. In other words, Story Mode access can be affected when the underlying Online entitlement expires, even though the campaign itself is designed for solo play.
What to verify before purchasing
- The exact platform: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC or another console edition.
- Whether the product is the full GTAV edition or standalone GTA Online.
- Whether Story Mode is included outright or offered as an upgrade.
- Which account owns the digital license and which account is signed in on the console.
- Whether a subscription or trial supplied the entitlement and is still active.
What “solo” does and does not mean
Solo means that you can complete the campaign without joining a multiplayer lobby or coordinating with another person. It does not guarantee that every platform can launch the game with the network disabled. PC Story Mode is generally playable offline after activation, while PS5 and Xbox Series X|S currently impose the separate GTA Online entitlement requirement described above.

Troubleshooting when Story Mode will not start
“I bought Story Mode, but the console says GTA Online is required”
- Check whether the console is a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, where Rockstar currently requires the Online entitlement.
- Open the purchase history or game-management screen for the account that owns the title.
- Confirm that the product is the edition containing Story Mode, or that the Story Mode upgrade was purchased.
- If access came from GTA+, Game Pass, PlayStation Plus or a free trial, verify that the qualifying subscription or Online purchase is still active.
- Sign out and back in with the purchasing account, then retry the game. If the entitlement still does not appear, use Rockstar’s article on GTA Online being required for GTAV Story Mode and contact the platform or Rockstar support channel named there.
“Offline mode is unavailable on my PC”
- Reconnect and sign in to the owning Rockstar account.
- Let the launcher complete updates and entitlement verification.
- Start Story Mode once while online, then close the game normally before trying offline launch again.
- Reconnect if cloud synchronization or a game update is pending.
These steps address the usual distinction between an activated installation and an installation that has never completed its first verification.
“Activation required” appears after I already bought the game
Check that the storefront account and Rockstar account are linked to the purchase, that you are not using a different Windows or console profile, and that the game is not a subscription-only entitlement that has expired. Rockstar maintains a separate support page for the Grand Theft Auto Online Activation required error. Although the message mentions Online, the underlying issue is often an entitlement or account mismatch that support must resolve.
Buying and setup checklist
Use this checklist before spending money or deleting an installation:
- Identify the edition: read the platform-specific product description, not just the words “GTA 5.”
- Confirm Story Mode inclusion: make sure it is included or that the upgrade is clearly available.
- For PC: create or access a Rockstar Games account and complete activation while online.
- For PS5 or Xbox Series X|S: verify the required GTA Online entitlement, especially if access previously came from a subscription or trial.
- Plan for occasional reconnection: PC offline play can still need verification, updates or cloud synchronization.
- Keep saves separate in your expectations: Story Mode and GTA Online are different modes with different progression.
Bottom line
You can play GTA 5 alone because Story Mode is a single-player campaign. On PC, Rockstar says it generally runs offline after installation and activation, subject to periodic verification, updates and synchronization. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar’s current support policy requires GTA Online for Story Mode access, so your edition and account entitlement matter even when you intend to play entirely by yourself.
