Yes—much of Final Fantasy XIV’s main scenario can be played without other players in your party. The game’s Duty Support system fills certain required dungeons with NPC companions, so you can enter without matchmaking with strangers. It is not a universal solo mode: coverage is limited to the duties on Square Enix’s current supported list, while some trials, raids and other activities still use player group sizes.
What “solo” means in Final Fantasy XIV
In this context, playing solo means completing a supported instanced dungeon without queuing with other human players. Duty Support supplies the party members as NPCs. Square Enix describes it as a system that lets you “bring certain NPCs with you into instanced dungeons required to progress without queuing with other players.” You can read the feature description and the current duty list in the official Duty Support manual.
This distinction matters because Final Fantasy XIV remains an online, duty-based game. Duty Support removes the need to match with other players for listed dungeons; it does not turn every story instance, trial, raid or optional activity into a one-player scenario. The exact duty entry is the authority for whether NPC support is available.

Duty Support is an in-game way to register for an eligible dungeon with NPCs instead of a player-matched party. The interface shows which duties qualify and the NPC party available for that duty.

- Open the Duty menu and choose Duty Support, or go to the entrance of a duty that displays the Duty Support icon.
- Select the dungeon you need to enter. The supported-duty screen identifies the available NPC party.
- Review the listed companions. Some duties allow you to switch among available NPCs; others use a fixed party.
- Register for the duty, then choose Commence when the entry prompt appears.
The entrance icon is useful when you are already standing at a dungeon, while the Duty Support option is more convenient when you are checking the menu. If neither route presents a duty, first verify that the specific instance appears on the current official list rather than assuming the feature is unavailable because of a temporary problem.
NPC choices are not the same in every expansion
NPC customization depends on the duty. The manual specifically notes that A Realm Reborn instanced dungeons use preset NPC party members that cannot be changed. Later duties may present more than one available companion and let you switch the selection before registering. Treat the party shown on the screen as definitive for that dungeon; do not expect the same controls in every expansion.
How much of the main story can be completed this way?
The current manual lists supported main-scenario dungeons from all six released story groupings: A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker and Dawntrail. It also lists a small number of optional sidequest dungeons. That makes Duty Support a substantial path through the story, but the list is duty-specific rather than a promise that every instance attached to a quest is supported.

- The Dusk Vigil from Heavensward.
- Shisui of the Violet Tides from Stormblood.
- The Clyteum from Dawntrail.
The same Patch 7.5 documentation describes The Clyteum as a four-player dungeon that can be entered with Trust or Duty Support NPCs. That wording confirms NPC entry for that duty; it does not establish that every four-player dungeon has the same option.
Which duties still involve groups?
Trials and raids are separate duty types from the NPC-supported dungeons discussed above. Current patch documentation includes examples that are explicitly built around player group sizes. Patch 7.5 identifies The Unmaking as an eight-player trial and Windurst: The Third Walk as an eight-player party or 24-player alliance raid. Those entries demonstrate why “the story” and “every story duty” are not interchangeable: a quest can lead to content with a different group requirement.
Patch 7.4 gives the same contrast. It documents Mistwake as enterable with Trust or Duty Support NPCs, while listing Hell on Rails as an eight-player trial and AAC Heavyweight Tier as an eight-player raid. You can read those examples in the Patch 7.4 notes.
These examples are not a universal rule that every trial requires eight players or every raid uses the same format. They are a reminder to inspect the individual duty. If it is absent from the Duty Support list and its entry describes a trial, raid or alliance format, expect a player-group activity rather than an NPC-supported dungeon.

Duty Support versus matchmaking
For supported dungeons, the practical choice is whether NPCs or other players fill the party. The available documentation does not establish a comparative clear time, difficulty level, reward rate or NPC performance measurement, so those should not be treated as fixed advantages of either option.

Choose Duty Support when avoiding a queue with strangers is your priority and the dungeon is listed. Choose the normal queue when the duty is not supported or when you specifically want a party of human players. The game’s interface, rather than a broad expansion label, determines which choice is available for the instance in front of you.
A practical first-run checklist
If you are progressing through the story and want to avoid an unexpected player queue, use this routine before entering each duty:

- Check the current supported list. Search the official Duty Support manual for the exact duty name.
- Look for the entrance icon. When you are at the dungeon entrance, the special icon indicates applicable Duty Support access.
- Open the support screen. From the Duty menu, select Duty Support and choose the duty.
- Review the party shown. If the NPC lineup is fixed, that is expected for duties such as the A Realm Reborn instances described in the manual.
- Register and commence. Once the duty and party are correct, register and start the instance.
This checklist prevents the most common misunderstanding: seeing that one story dungeon supports NPCs and assuming the next story duty must work the same way.

What to expect if you are worried about strangers or mistakes
Beginner questions often focus on whether a player must run dungeons with strangers or might inconvenience other players by making mistakes. An official Lodestone beginner guide uses those questions as examples of newcomer concerns; it is not a measured survey of player behavior. You can see the wording in the beginner guide.
For a duty that appears in the Duty Support list, the direct answer is straightforward: you can register with the displayed NPC companions instead of queuing with other players. That removes the human-party matchmaking step for that dungeon. It does not guarantee a particular completion time, difficulty or reward outcome, because those comparisons are not specified in the official feature description.
If the duty is not listed, do not treat the absence of NPCs as an error without checking its type and the current documentation. You may be looking at a trial, raid or another activity outside the supported set. In that case, follow the duty’s stated group format and the normal registration route.
How to handle a missing or unexpected option
The duty is not visible in Duty Support
Search the official list by the exact duty name. Coverage is selective, and a dungeon connected to the main scenario is not automatically included. Also check whether a recent patch changed the list; Patch 7.5 added The Dusk Vigil, Shisui of the Violet Tides and The Clyteum.

The entrance has no Duty Support icon
The manual identifies the icon as the indicator for applicable duties. If it is absent, verify the duty name and type before trying other menus. Do not assume that every nearby entrance or every dungeon in the same expansion shares support.
You cannot change the NPC party
That behavior is expected for A Realm Reborn instanced dungeons, whose NPC parties are preset according to the manual. On duties that permit substitutions, the available choices appear on the support screen; there is no general roster that can be applied to every dungeon.
The next objective is a trial or raid
Check the duty entry for its group size and whether it appears in the supported list. The Unmaking, Windurst: The Third Walk, Hell on Rails and AAC Heavyweight Tier illustrate that current content includes eight-player trials, eight-player raids and a 24-player alliance format. Those examples should prompt a duty-by-duty check, not an assumption that the entire quest line is NPC-supported.

Keeping your expectations current
Guides written before recent patches can understate coverage. The safest reference is the live official manual, supplemented by current Lodestone patch notes. As of the Patch 7.5 notes updated May 11, 2026, the three additions named above are documented, and The Clyteum is explicitly described as supporting Trust or Duty Support NPC entry. When a later patch changes the list, the game’s Duty Support screen and the newest official notes should take precedence over an older walkthrough.
The practical answer
Final Fantasy XIV is substantially solo-friendly for story progression because Duty Support lets you run many required dungeons with NPC companions. It is not a blanket solo mode: support is limited to the official duty list, NPC customization differs by instance, and trials, raids and alliance content can retain player-group formats. Before each objective, identify the duty, check the current list and use the Duty Support menu or entrance icon when it is offered.
